NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
the drivers are somewhat crazy around ft. lauderdale, i rented a car and had to definitely stay more alert than i normally do (home is missouri), but i did see a fair amount of bikers, which is my main method of transportation at home

i interview tomorrow, really excited for it, but somewhat apprehensive b/c of the waitlist issues, here's hoping they're not full

edit - also, drove around their campus today to get an idea of where i needed to go, the school itself looks beautiful and it's in a pretty nice area, so no complaints on that

It's looking like NOVA for me. I said no thanks to LECOM, AZCOM, CCOM, and I'm waiting to hear from Western out here in Oregon cause I interviewed there on Saturday. Not 110% sure if I'm going to NOVA, but I'd say 85%.

Someone asked about what to wear. I wore a white shirt and a tie. No suit, and every interview I went to they commented on it and I said "I guess it's working because I have already been noticed." Four interviews, four acceptances, I say rock the white shirt and tie!

Does anyone have a link to the student budget or know what the budget is for living expenses.

Here is what they gave me in my packet when I interviewed. I cannot find it on their site.

most of these figures however are grossly overestimated. I only know of a few people who took out the full 76K/82K for the year, but most of them have families.
Id say on average of the people who ive talked to, most have taken out somewhere between 55-65k total for the whole year

How much do you guys usually spend on "books and supplies" each semester? The $3,000 per semester in that chart can't be accurate, right?

EDIT: I've also noticed that their on house campus rates includes a summer rate. Do people have to maintain their housing during their summer vacation days? Not having to do so would be a great way of saving 2K a year.

So far all I have really done with financial aid is fill out the fafsa and list Nova on the fafsa form. Is there anything else I'm suppose to do? They havent really given us any info yet. Will Nova automatically sign me up for subsidized (Stanford) and unsubsidized loans and all I have to do is accept or reduce? Or is there some application I have to fill out?

you don't need to buy books your first year. everything you need is available in the library, and all notes are given to you in class. if you want to supplement the notes to get a different/better understanding of the material, then you turn to the books and read up (which you can do in the library). You will need to set aside $200-500 for the purchasing your medical supplies (which you do your 2nd-3rd week of school). Price depends on the quality of equipment you buy, and if you buy through school or elsewhere.

Does anyone who interviewed on the 15th have that list of names of the interviewers that they passed out? My packet got left behind on accident on the way to the airport.
Edit = Got them, thanks.

I went down to financial aid last week to turn in the packet of paper work they sent me while I was house hunting down there. They needed an authorization form filled out to take loans past a certain point. I believe it will show up as a requirement on webstar once they receive your FASFA information.

Here is the link to it.

Thanks for the help! I found the required forms on my webstar. It says I have been selected to mail in a signed copy of my Federal income tax return and an income verification form. I wonder if everyone has to do this. not that I have anything to hide was just wondering.

That is just an audit that the government does randomly for FASFA. I had a friend who had it happen to him twice as an undergrad, but it is random.

I emailed the admissions because I have some concerns about the prerequisites that are stated on my acceptance letter. I sent them one email 3 weeks ago and another one 2 weeks ago. I have yet to hear back 🙁. Is it normal for the admission staff to take a while to get back to you? I should try calling them but it's much easier to explain by email, and they probably won't be able to answer my question straight away. Plus, I don't want to be an annoying brat, since this is my only acceptance :scared: :scared:

Did you try emailing Ellen Rondino ([email protected])? She seems to respond to my emails in reasonable time.

What are your concerns about the prereqs? I had some issues I had to work out with them before I started, so I may be able to help in the meantime.

If anyone is looking for a roomate reply to this or PM me if you prefer!

I withdrew my acceptance today. Good Luck to everyone still waiting!

Hey, I'm a bit confused about tuition costs, and I'm just wondering if someone could clear this up. On that cost of attendance document that posted earlier, it divides the $40K of tuition into three semesters (spring, fall, summer). Do we take classes in the summer? Do we need to pay the summer tuition, if we don't?

You don't choose what classes you take. You're going to be in school a lot more than whatever 2 semester undergrad schedule you're used to. You can find the Nova Academic calendar online. You're in school all year except Thanksgiving, 2 weeks in December, and a week in March. You also get the month of June off between 1st and 2nd year. After 2nd year you'll be studying for boards and maybe have a couple weeks before you start rotations. Once you start rotations they're all year 3rd and 4th years.

They break it up 3 ways to be easier on the students and give us 3 loan disbursements instead of 2.

Hi, I am having a supremely hard time deciding between PCOM and NSUCOM 😕

PCOM Pros:
-Close to family & friends (I'm from PA and went to school in NYC)
-No dress code
-Non-mandatory lecture (though I think I'm the sort of person that would go to lecture, because I like writing info out)
-cheaper to move-in
-may be easier to live without a car first year (not bringing a car first year)
-recorded lectures first & second year
-large number of affiliated hospitals

PCOM Cons:
-crime in Philly? (heard Philly is a bit rough around the edges)

NSUCOM Pros:
-super friendly students (got a good vibe when I visited and spoke w students)
-new area/culture/experience
-nice weather
-someone I care about lives there
-Kaplan board prep course included in tuition

NSUCOM Cons:
-seems harder to survive without a car
-hot & humid summer (I will be walking to class that first year)
-dress code & mandatory lecture (though I'v heard this isn't really that much of an issue & I would probably go to lecture anyway)
-much higher move-in costs
-recorded lectures mainly in second year (first year may have a few recorded lecs)

BOTH SCHOOL PROS(also, what I think is most important overall):
-both have good clinical experience
-->NSU rotation sites: http://medicine.nova.edu/do/clinical_rotation.html
-->PCOM affiliated hospitals: http://www.pcom.edu/clinical_educati...te_lists_.html
-similar match rate (https://www.do-online.org/pdf/AOA%20...02009%20tl.pdf)
-similar tuition price
-both have strong reputations (so I've heard, though I'm more familiar w PCOM's strong clinical reputation)

In General:
-I'm leaning towards family medicine (though that could change)
-I don't currently have a preference as to where I want to practice

Thoughts? Corrections to what I've heard? I know it's about the right fit, but I could see myself happy at both institutions and I believe that a big part of where you end up for residency is up to how hard you work. Maybe an outside perspective will help. Thanks in advance!!! 🙂

Quick question for current students. How long does it take for your financial aid to hit your bank account? I am trying to calculate all of my finances until school starts and was wondering if I can expect my money from loans in mid August or if it won't show up until September.

Thanks!

It takes about a week after whatever it says the disbursement date is. So this winter the date said 12/28, I received the money in my bank account on 1/4, we started class on 1/3. I hope this helps.

Has anyone heard anything back as of late regarding decisions? I interviewed 2/3 and I remember Ellen saying that it'd take about 4 weeks for us to hear back but I haven't heard anything at all. WebStar still shows "Invited for Interview."

They said about 4-5 weeks at the interview i believe.

I interviewed about a week after you and I'm not going to check webstar until 5 weeks from my interview date. Otherwise I would have been compulsively checking for 5 straight weeks. Hopefully they'll call or e-mail me before that with good news.

I called on tuesday and they said they would let us know sometime next week and she couldn't give a specific date.

Maybe it's just me, but I am kinda curious/worried how I haven't received anything from NSU since they accepted me and received all my deposits/transcripts. I just filled out FAFSA even though I haven't received financial aid package just in case I am missing out anything. Have you guys received anything from the school after your acceptance package? Also, does anyone know when they turn your provisional acceptace to full-acceptance?

Provisional turns to full once they receive both of your deposits and your final transcripts. If you're still in school (like me, have to wait until May) it'll take longer. If you've done all of this you could just call and ask. I haven't gotten anything else either, I just subscribed to the Sharklink/facebook groups where there is a lot of information. Given that they are still interviewing, I doubt they are in the mindset to give us a lot of information when the class is not completely full.

I still have to work on financial aid and loans, but I haven't had time. Thanks for reminding me that I have to fill out the FASFA 🙂

Hi all, I'm eager to hear from NSU because I'd really like to go here and I have deposits due at other schools. I interviewed mid-Feb and have been told by admissions staff that I should be regularly checking webstar for the decision of the admissions committee.. except the people at the webstar help desk say I can't access the system unless I am admitted.

Any info you can provide on when I might expect to hear back (and how) and whether it is indeed possible for me to get into webstar would be greatly appreciated. Also, if any current students can provide some feedback-- I loved NSU when I interviewed but interacting with staff has left me with the impression that I might feel like just a number as a student here. I know they are swamped with applicants, but I have found other schools to be much more helpful and personable.

Thanks!

You should be able to access the admissions page, which is where I've seen all updates to my application. I feel like members of an admissions committee should have mental health backgrounds. I know I've been pretty neurotic waiting on a decision. I was told we were looking at waitlist spots due to late applications. Wonder how many people got in off the list last year?

I've heard that the faculty/students are great, administration is not so great.

For most schools it takes 4-8 weeks to hear back. I know for me, since I was the last interview in December, it was two weeks.

"Well Mr. X, your application looks pretty good, but unfortunately this late in the game you are looking at a waitlisted position."

That's what the interviewer said, verbatim. If you look at the 2009-10 thread, it seems many were accepted off waitlist like right before classes started.

Do not put too much faith in what your interviewers tell you. When I interviewed 2 out of 3 of the questions I asked them were answered with incorrect information.

But yes, at this point you are probably looking at a waitlist spot unless you really shine. That being said, there is a fair bit of movement on the waitlist here according to everything I have read!

Well based on my interview day on 2/3, Ellen said that there were still spots available but that the class was pretty full and so that for acceptances, they'd be picking "the best of the best." But just looking back on last year's thread, I'm sure if you end up on the waitlist, there's a good chance you can get off of it before orientation.

Slaving at my job for another 4 months and 19 days and then I'm driving from Denver to Fort Lauderdale. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Where's everyone else coming from??

Im coming from orlando and working untill the second week of july, counting down as well 😀

any info yet? tuesday will be 4 weeks since my interview, and still haven't heard anything

i know they said about 4 weeks, but i've still been checking webstar daily since my interview

Just from reading earlier thread posts, I have a hunch that they're waiting until after the interviews on March 15th (the latest date I saw people post an interview date) to decide everyone that's interviewed since February 1st I think; I haven't seen anyone that's interviewed since February hear anything back. It's probably because they're low on space in the class and want to see everyone else remaining to interview before deciding who to pick.

Hey I also interviewed on the 3rd of February and STILL haven't heard anything back...this is a bit frustrating. 6 wks is kind of an unprofessional amount of time to not respond back with anything concerning results...

I called today and the woman who I spoke to said that the adcom had not met yet and when I asked when they would she said that they have not set a date. I have a ton of paperwork that I have been holding off for another school because I wanted to hear from Nova, bc I rank it higher, but now I don't think I can hold off any further. I really hope she just wasn't at the liberty to tell me when the adcom was meeting so they wouldn't get a million phone calls.

I am in a similar place. I have several offers on the table and am trying to decide how much longer to wait on them. They could at least have emailed all of us and told us a reason why there was a delay and an anticipated decision date!

I spoke with Ellen on Thursday. The dean is out of town with family. When he returns, final decisions will be made. She urged everyone to remain calm, which I really appreciated. I got the impression her hands were tied... She even gave a shout out to SDN... "This for all my dawgs oo'er dere at SDN... throw it up son!"

Not really. But she did mention y'all.

Haha, I'm so sorry you guys are waiting for people like me to submit my second deposit... doing that on monday 🙂

the dean was probably my best impression about nova on interview day. In addition to being a dean, the guy is a private pilot, has basically traveled extensively/lived all over the place, and has a moustache that probably no other person could pull off. I remember some other epic stuff about his background but I can't remember it all now.
