NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in too!!!! I also got the email yesterday from them!!! WOOOO HOOOOO..... I'm on cloud nine right now

I interviewed on Oct. 7th for those who are curious.

ACCEPTED!!! I AM SO JUICED!!! First acceptance, and what a load off my back it is! NSU is my top choice so far! =)

I interviewed 10/7.

Congrats, man!!! I must have seen you since I interviewed the same day!!!

Anyone else accepted on 10/8 not received his/her letter in the mail yet? I know the e-mail said to allow 2 weeks for it to get here...but it's been more than that, so just wondering if I should call them.
Thanks!
~Tarun

Got the e-mail from NSU today. Provisionally accepted! Congrats to everyone else who has heard good news!

Provisionally accepted! It's the first acceptance for my season, so it's definitely exciting.

Accepted! Interviewed 10/14. Anyone else from that day hear anything?

Accepted! Interviewed 10/14. Looks like the wait time is still below 3 weeks.

For some reason, they've had problems with my application. I sent my secondary and letters in September but I called and they put the letters under someone else with the same last name. Then they didn't download my August MCAT which I sent with my primary so they rejected me based on my old MCAT. It seems they got things in order now and are reviewing but now I'm way behind. Haven't had these problems with any other school so it's kind of left me with a bad impression of them. Kind of feels like I wasted the fee.

I was there 10/14, but no email for me. 🙁

My webstar still says "invited for interview" though, so I guess that's better than "denied" or whatever they say when you're rejected.

After some thought, I'm pretty sure I'll be withdrawing my NSU acceptance. I hope my seat goes to one of you. Good luck!

P.S. Does anyone know how I go about doing this? Do I just shoot an e-mail to Ellen?

May I ask what makes you withdraw from Nova? And all the best with anywhere you decide to go to. 🙂

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet, it was a much faster turnaround time than I was expecting so hopefully yours comes soon!

hey! I must have seen you since we interviewed the same day! Congrats!

Congrats to you too! Think you'll end up going to Nova? With the weather I'm having up north right now, Florida is sounding better and better every day.

I was under the impression the notification would come via phone call and be mailed out the same day.

My heart skipped a beat when I received an email titled, "NSU COM Decision" because I had a fleeting thought of not being accepted, but when I opened the email it read, "Congratulations..."

Someone created a Facebook group for NSU-COM class of 2015!

http://www.facebook.com/social_graph.php?node_id=152697268100861#!/group.php?gid=152697268100861

Congratulations to those who have been accepted, and good luck in your future endeavors to those who are less fortunate this time around.

Tell me about it! Its been raining/snowing for a straight week and I'm over the gray weather!

I still have some interviews, so I'm not sure what my final decision will be. I was very impressed by Nova, though (especially the awesome mustache the dean rocked!). What about you?

Thank you. I am definitely going. I staggered my applications submitting NSU-COM first so I wouldn't have to fly around the country for interviews to other schools if it worked out. NSU-COM is my first choice. No more stress.

I'm excited. I'm relieved. I'm relaxed. I plan to do a lot of relaxing, fishing, and tennis until school starts. This may be the last chance I get to be carefree while enjoying a Florida "winter" for many, many years...

I am considering getting a head start on the MPH, but I am leaning against it...

For those that had an interview here I was wondering if anyone remembered what they said on the interview day about med students also going for the MPH. Sounded like a lot of people did it but I dont remember if you have to apply to it seperatly and how much extra coursework it would add to your schedule. Anyone remember? I was too nervous anticipating my interview to pay to close attention!

I think taking some time off and enjoying your free time sounds like a great plan! Starting the MPH might end up leaving you stressed before you start med school, and that could make your first year really un-fun.

I'm really happy for you- getting into your top choice must feel incredible! You are officially DONE with the waiting game!

They said you can apply for the program in your second semester of first year and you can take the classes you can handle. If you can't finish the MPH in the first 2 years, you can take online classes while you are doing your rotations so you can finish in the four years of med school (I got mixed numbers on this, but 20-60 seem to do that per class). If you can't finish the MPH during your 4 years, you can finish it online during your residency. I'm guessing not many people get much of this done their intern year, so now you're talking about PGY-2 to finish. It sounds like it's in your best interests, and possible, to do it during the four years.

Oh, and Congrats to everyone with acceptances!!! It's a great program and the Florida sunshine doesn't sound too shabby either.

Well, part of it is what current students say when they explain why they chose a school. I just wasn't feeling Nova on top of other things like the dress code, attendance, 80hrs mandatory community service, and conv. & med spanish. Their comlex scores are also lower than all the other schools i've been accepted to. I'm not trying to bash on Nova because it is a great school, but It just isn't for me.

Thanks for the info! With the ability to finish it up online, no wonder so many students go for it. I'll probably look into it!

Yo! Anyone else from Oct 7th accepted? I just got it today, and couldn't be happier. To those who aren't into the community service, med Spanish, and rural rotations requirements, you're definitely better off elsewhere. I couldn't agree MORE with the school's (read: Dean Silvagni's) philosophy, and am excited to fulfill all of those req's, and more. No school is perfect, and NSU certainly is no exception, but with the exception of basically one other school (i.e. my state school = crazy cheap) I'm unlikely to go elsewhere.

Holler,
The bald philosophy guy from up north.
🙂

I've been looking into their MPH program too. I believe you can do all of the courses online since there is that option. With 4 years to spread out all of the courses I feel like it is totally do able.

Congrats to all the recent acceptances! 🙂

I don't know for sure yet but I was very impressed by the campus and philosophy of the school (and the moustache). I'm going to keep interviewing but I'm predicting some Florida sunshine in my future.

So I won't receive the confirmation email until later in November, since my interview isn't until December 7th. but got the right information so now I can make my flights!

My only concern is that it is pretty expensive in terms of cost of living. Are you just planning on taking out enough loans to cover it all? Also on the downside, there are no mountains. No mountains at all!! ...I guess I might just have to take up surfing or scuba diving 🙂

I've grown up in NYC and went to school in Miami so I have always experienced a "high" cost of living. But how much different is it really in other parts of the country? The only thing that I've really heard was rent was a little cheaper and beer and drinks were cheaper. What else is different?

Can't you just live on campus? They have housing, don't they, or is it still expensive?

I had to do a double take when I saw the cost of living sheet. But, I think they just let you borrow a lot more than you need. Rent there seemed relatively cheap, compared to any city. It looked like rent was $600-700 for a 1br in Davie, the tuition/fees are on the low end for IS and in the middle for OOS, and while Miami is an expensive city, Ft Laudy/Davie aren't too bad. You probably do want access to a car, at least for rotations, as public transportation is weak, but apart from that, I think you'd really have to try to spend $70k (leaving 11k after subtracting tuition, fees, rent) a year, let alone the $80 they let you borrow.

edit: Rent looks a bit higher. $700-1000 depending on location for a 1 br. And on campus housing looks like grand larceny 🙂
$14-15k for a year. http://www.nova.edu/publications/housing_packet/index.html

Jeez, no love from Nova! WTH?! I live a few miles from here and have other DO invites, not to mention I shadowed (and got an exceptional letter) a DO who graduated from here and has Nova students come through his office.

How long did it take most people to receive invites after the complete email?

IS, 28S, 3.93 sgpa, 3.95 ao

Thanks!

I'm in the same position with similar credentials... Have you heard anything/received an interview yet? Has anyone received an interview invite recently? I'm starting to go bananas.

Can anybody on here speak to how they felt NOVA and LECOM-Bradenton compare? I'm from the southeast and am looking pretty strongly at Florida schools. I have interviews coming up at both schools and am just curious about what people think about the pros and cons. Obviously depends on the person, but I would love to hear your impressions. Thanks.

@Polski, I have similar credentials too (slightly higher mcat, slightly lower gpa) and just was offered an interview at nova last week. It took them quite a while to invite me so I had kind of written this school off, so I wouldn't give up hope - when were you complete?

I guess I just live in a super-cheap area. I am used to paying about $500 for a huge two bedroom apartment, so there is a little bit of sticker-shock for me.

thanks for the reality check, though! I'm really excited about Nova.

Yeah, it seems pretty expensive but as far as I can tell it's overestimated to allow for more loans. If I go to Nova I don't think I'll take out the full amount but I'd rather take out a little more than I need instead of too little.

Yeah, rent is definitely cheaper where I'm from. I'm sharing a 2-br right now for about $500 apiece. Also I have a friend who moved to Ft. Lauderdale from near me, and he said groceries are more expensive too. A trip that would be $50-60 up here is closer to $75-80 in Ft. Lauderdale.

I'm not sure where many of these numbers are coming from- why all the "my friend said X" nonsense on SDN? It never stops.

Search around craigslist for the Ft. Lauderdale area and you'll be happily surprised. For example....

http://miami.craigslist.org/search/...srchType=A&minAsk=1000&maxAsk=1500&bedrooms=2

Sorry to hear of some people being turned off by the community service requirements and med Spanish requirements, but if you ain't in it to help others and step outside your comfort zone... I guess don't go to NSU.

interviewed @ LECOM-B on Monday & was accepted Friday. I also interviewed @ NSU-COM on Tuesday. I'm confident that I'll be accepted @ NSU & if that's the case I will attend NSU. Both interviews are very laid back - however I felt NSU's was a bit more personal bc they knew my file better. Both campuses are exceptional, however, the Bradenton area is a bit mundane. I'm about 10 mins from NSU so I know the area & know it's much more vibrant. As far as curriculum, you really have to sit in on the 2hr PBL section to see if it's for you. Personally, I think it's fine - but I'd rather a traditional lecture. LECOM's interview day felt like it went on forever, NSU's flew by. My interview group @ NSU was only 10 people so we had more interaction with our AMAZING tour guides that genuinely laid things out for us & explained a lot. LECOM guides seemed liked they just wanted to leave (aside from 2 people that were helpful). But, that is just trivial.. It's just chance that we got good tour guides @ NSU. Overall, I think NSU is a better fit for me. They both preach for the interviewers to figure out if their school is right for them. While @ each school make sure you can picture yourself there for some tough years lol. Good luck on your interview, pm me if you have any more qs.

Still waiting...It's amazing to me that I haven't heard back because while I have a whatever MCAT, my other stats and background are great! BUT, I called Nova Thursday and turns out they only had my old MCAT score, not the newer higher one. So if anyone out there hasn't heard anything and retook the MCAT you may want to look into it. The lady said she was going to put me in for review, not sure if I had already gone through or was still in a waiting pile. My status has been "Decision Pending" forever.

Oh well, I have 4 other interviews so I guess only time will tell if Nova shows me some love.

hey guys i have my interview on nov 4th. it seems a lot of people recommend the comfort suites. i just want to make sure im booking the right one. is it the Comfort Suites Ft. Lauderdale Airport West – Davie
2540 Davie Road, Davie, FL 33317?

And I was thinking of using the shuttle but are there a lot of places walking distance from this hotel? otherwise maybe ill get a car

I liked LECOM better for the exact opposite reasons.

I would suggest visiting both schools because they are very different. Make sure you can see yourself learning in their environment. Good luck!

Yep, that's it.

It would definitely be nice to have a car, so if you can afford it, go for it. If not, there isn't much to do right next to the hotel. There's a grocery store and some chain restaurants that are a 5 minute walk from the hotel, but that's pretty much it.
