sooo i'm just looking through novas travel site and i'm wondering, for those of you who flew in to your interview, did you fly into ft lauderdale or miami? also where did you stay/where do you recommend people staying? fortunately or unfortunately i am not old enough to rent a car, but there seems to be some shuttles. does any place have shuttles from the airport to the hotel and from hotel to campus? any input would be greatly appreciated! i want to book tomorrow for a spot on oct 22!!

several people have written about what hotels they stayed at and the shuttle services. I know I did, but I'm not going to write it again. the search button is your friend. I stayed at the Comfort Suites.

A lot of people have been recommending the comfort suites because they have a shuttle to/from both the airport and NSU. Just make sure you book the right one. One of the PPs accidentally booked the one farther away from NSU.

And you'll want to fly into Fort Lauderdale (FLL), not Miami.

fly into ft lauderdale. the hampton inn in plantation was great. very close to the school, and they have a shuttle that will get you at the airport or drop you off at any time - just call ahead. they also have shuttles to and from NSU every hour on the hour.

I'm sure it won't be too much of a disadvantage. if you have high stats you will always be competitive, now or later in the year

I hope you're right. I probably can't go until December either.

Fly into Fort Lauderdale airport. It's alot closer.

I'm at Comfort Suites - Ft. Lauderdale West right now. The room is big for what you pay for, in my opinion. They have a free shuttle to and from the airport and to and from NSU. You just have to request it at the front desk. If you tell them that you have an interview at NSU, they should give you a discount (the NSU rate).

From my experience, if you plan to check out the area (like the beaches), renting a car is the best option (if you can), since cabs can be quite expensive.

Interview tomorrow!!!

i'm not leaving til the morning of the 22nd, so if you get in early enough on the 21st, we could get dinner and/or drinks. (assuming you want to drink before your interview... haha) i'm definitely looking to explore the city on thursday night though.

good luck!

I walked around campus with another interviewee. The campus is nice and the gym is dope. They have a rock climbing wall, racquet ball courts, basketball courts, and plenty of weight lifting/cardio equipment. They had a nice food court downstairs with a huge fish tank in the middle, and a Starbucks. There's also a small pub inside, which doesn't serve alcohol until after 5pm, so unfortunately we were unable to get a post-interview beer.....whomp, whomp whooomp....dislike 👎.

The main campus library is huge...with an exorbitant amount of elevators. Very nice. The whole campus is brochure worthy in my opinion.

We passed by the Miami Dolphins training facility on campus. I stopped and stood to take a picture of the sign on the fence that said "NO STOPPING OR STANDING NEAR FENCE." I'm a rebel. 😎

Alas, I looked in every pond around campus and didn't see one gator...maybe next time :xf:

Just finished the interview...I'm sitting at FLL (the airport) right now waiting for my flight. The interview was pretty fast, only 20-30 minutes long. Pretty conversational with the basic questions thrown in. One thing I noticed was the "campus" feel that NSU COM had (as opposed to an "office building" feel). That was a plus for me. The dean was absolutely awesome. I seemed like he had a lot of interesting life experiences. He talked to the interview group after lunch. Overall, I had a very positive impression of the school. 👍

...and if you want to explore, I recommend the beach area. Being from california, I thought that the beach was pretty good. Definitely more tropical with warm water. Rent a car if possible, because taxis can get VERY expensive from Davie to the beaches and back.

So how's the weather right now? I fly out tomorrow for my interview on Thur, and it looks like there's supposed to be scattered T-storms. This is my first time at the ocean and I really want to be able to spend some time at the beach.

Dang you just missed the sun. Right now it's cloudy and drizzling a bit. There's supposed to be rain on wednesday and thursday, maybe friday. How long are you staying? I heard that I might clear up by the weekend

anybody get invited to the "Medical School Experience Program"? It says in my email "in lieu of a traditional interview, but it should not be construed as an acceptance" I'm not sure what this means. Anyone?
..

I got this too. What dates were you guys offered?

October 22 and Dec 3. I just withdrew, though. Good luck to everyone!:xf:

Has anyone done this program before (either last year or this year) or are these the first two dates of the program this cycle? I don't really understand the point of it in lieu of having an interview. Is the implication that someone has a higher chance of acceptance through this as opposed to a traditional interview, and that they are trying to recruit said applicant based on a higher mcat score and/or gpa? And is it more informal interactions with faculty/students as opposed to wearing a suit and formally sitting down and answering questions?

I think it's the first year they are doing this. It is only for students with higher numbers in their applicant pool. I don't understand how it will work, either, but I'm sure you can call the admissions office. Practicing on sim patients while wearing a suit...

i was actually thinking about this issue today.... especially since my suit is a skirt which is good for walking and sitting but not really for busting my ass at saving messy sim patients to impress the administration lol. i was gonna call and ask more about the program tomorrow.

Dude, the dean was def a BAMF. Nova really impressed me. I'm just upset we have to wait so long for a decision. I'd rather not pay the deposit to LECOM-B just to find out 3 days later I got into Nova :/

(btw I was the Florida State guy. I'm assuming you were the guy from San Diego??)

haha yea. i guess the bolt gives it away

This school is quickly moving up my list. I love its location and that it has on campus living. I also noticed that a few people matched into places in IL, and they recommended that you do rotations at places you want to go. Now, I'm asking, just how easy is it to do rotations at places in IL from NSUCOM?

Does anyone know if Nova offers substantial scholarships to incoming students?

Almost all of 4th year is elective rotations that you can do where ever you want in whatever you want.

Blah, I had just written a big long post about my interview day and it disappeared on this hotel computer. :annoyed:

I just finished my interview a few hours ago and am now at my nice beach hotel. I've never been to FL before, but I'm liking it more and more. At first it was a bit overwhelming since it's so different than where I'm from, but I'm getting used to it.

The interview was pretty relaxed. They did seem to grill me about what I'd do if med school was more difficult than I could handle. I don't know if this was standard or because I have a family and had a less than stellar college experience 10+ yrs ago.

I'll try to write more later, but I was pretty impressed with the school. The concerns that have been brought up about attendance, spanish, or volunteer hr requirement don't really seem that bad after attending the interview. I wish we could have toured the campus. We were never offered the optional tour that PPs have mentioned.

"Optional tour" pretty much meant that you could wander around the campus by yourself...there was no formal tour or guide to accompany you.

Jeez, no love from Nova! WTH?! I live a few miles from here and have other DO invites, not to mention I shadowed (and got an exceptional letter) a DO who graduated from here and has Nova students come through his office.

How long did it take most people to receive invites after the complete email?

IS, 28S, 3.93 sgpa, 3.95 ao

Thanks!

Wow, now that's a head-scratcher. You didn't say you hate them anywhere in your app did you?

Hey I am pretty sure we don't offer scholarships. I am a current M1 so if anyone has any questions send me a PM!

Cancelled my dec interview - attending lecom-b

Darn, I was really hoping they offered something to bring the price down a bit. 🙁

For all of you who have received the acceptance packet, I was wondering what you are doing with the Instate Residency Forms for tuition purposes. On page 3 it gives a list of everything that we need to turn in. I was wondering:
1. Do we have to turn in everything on that page or just as much as we can?
2. If we are still dependent on our parents, should I send in my parents information or my information?
3. How long do we have to turn it in? I think the forms said within 30 days of receiving the packet, but I just wanted to make sure because that seems kinda quick, espicially if our deposit isn't even due until December.
Thanks for the help

Hey! I was at the interview yesterday as well! Were you in group 1 or 2?

LOL nope! That would at least explain the ignoring...w/e I guess it's now just a waiting game.

when were you complete?

Well I submitted my secondary over a month ago and my LORs were received about two weeks ago. But they have given out interviews without receiving LORs. So I am a little worried. I guess only time will tell.

I think you'll be fine, especially with your credentials. They may just be busy now and tied up with a lot of applications. Even early in the cycle, when I submitted to them late July, I didn't hear back until one of the last few days of August about an interview invite.. and they got my letters either the day before or day after (their online system says the day after but I have a post card saying the day before). So, even when things were "less" busy, it took them a month to get to my application.

Try not to get stressed, stay cool and calm. I'd put money down saying you will hear back from them in the next week or two.

It seemed like most of the interview invites went out in one batch to cover the dates through December. If I recall correctly, they were handed out to those who were submitted and mostly complete (some got invites without letters) from June, July, and August. There might have been a couple from early Sept., but not many. So, you might be in a mix for the second batch or to fill spots from cancellations prior to January. That's just my guess though.

woot!

flying out wednesday night for my interview thursday? any last minute tips / suggestions? any hard interview questions you got stumped on?

and if you're going to be around the comfort suites, let me know and we can grab some food or something beforehand. good luck with everyone's applications!

Anyone going to the Medical Experience Interview on Friday the 22nd? I'll be at the W Fort Lauderdale if you wanna chill and talk. I'm arriving Thursday afternoon and planning on visiting the campus before the interview that day.
