NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Writing a letter too soon can make you look desperate. I would hold off for a week or two before sending one.
idk why you would say that. That can't be true.

If this is your top choice, no reason to wait. Just be honest in it. I sent a letter of intent last year, and was accepted. Who knows if it helped, but it couldn't have hurt.

When did you send in your letter (month) and how long did you have to wait for your acceptance?

I emailed Ms. Leveille (Admissions Coordinator) and she said the Admissions Board won't meet up again until mid-June. =/

I just withdrew my position (and my $2000 deposit) today. I hope one of you gets the spot -- best of luck!

Does anybody have any news about an upcoming committee meeting? It's the middle of June now.

I received an email from Anastasia today. It mentioned that accepted students typically do not withdraw until.July, and I am still on the waitlist. The email gives us an option to remove ourselves from the wait list. Anyone else receive this?

Yeah me too. July 1st is still a long ways away. I am planning on retaking the MCAT and applying. The waiting is just horrendous. I know people that have paid their deposit ($2000) but are not going here and have not dropped yet. Why be such a stumblingblock ?

Hey, M2 here looking for a roommate/roommates for the fall semester. I need housing by August 1st. I would prefer to live close to campus between $400-750 for my share of rent/utilities.

About me:

*Non-smoker
*No pets
*Laid-back hardworking type
*Relatively quiet/will be studying a lot
*I like to joke around, lots of sarcasm
*Respectful of others things/privacy
*Big sports fan. I like to exercise as well.
*Originally from IL
*I have a car, so I need parking to be available

What I'm looking for:
*Someone similar
*Ideally looking for someone I could be friends/hang out with

I didn't receive anything from her today, but I guess they're going to wait a little longer? Let's hope they don't have to wait too long.

That hurts. They should drop pronto.

ACCEPTED!!!! found out yesterday! excited to meet you all this august!

I interviewed on May 16th. I think we were the last group to interview. I am so happy!!

Anastasia emailed me yesterday afternoon. Have you heard anything yet?

While I am still waitlisted at NSU, I can recommend you some nearby housing options, since I have lived two minutes away from, and on the same street as, NSU since I was 3 years old (and I am also a South Florida native, as I was born in the next city north):

-Forest Ridge (housing community located on Pine Island and Nova Drive with another entrance off Pine Island just south of 30th): lots of houses are up for sale, and you can sometimes find things for rent, too
- Pine Island Ridge (various housing options, same street)
- Sunforest (apartments next to NSU)
- Rolling Hills (they have graduate housing and other housing, too)

I am not sure what your price range is, but if you want to pay less and do not mind driving a little bit, look at places within the city of Plantation. Things tend to be cheaper outside of Davie.

great, thanks for that input. I would be completely new to south florida so don't even know where to start. Going there in a few weeks to look at some places.

I was accepted in mid july last year. I was told my letter of intent helped me get off the wait list. If your #1 choice for Medicine is NSU, then send in your letter of intent. It will only help you.

I haven't posted in awhile because I've been busy but I'd like to clear some things up. If you've followed my post history you'll know that I am now a resident--not a current applicant to medical school. I was just offering advice based on my experience. True, you can send off your letter of intent whenever you feel like it but wouldn't you want to them to read your letter closer to when they have spots open up? Good luck to everyone.

I withdrew my spot on the waitlist this morning. It would've been so cool to go to a medical school two minutes from my house (that I have also lived by my entire life), but I am happy with my decision to attend LECOM Bradenton.
I wish all of you the best of luck! Don't give up hope!

Out of curiousity, did you interview on March 2nd? I sat next to a girl who lived next to NOVA as well. @allstargurl522

Yes, I was at that interview. I was the only person at that interview who didn't have to drive more than 2 minutes to the interview. How have you been? (We can continue this conversation via private message if you like, so we aren't crowding out the boards.)

Hey guys. I hopped over here from the 2012 thread to ask you guys about NSU's letter req. what did you guys use for the liberal arts letter? Is this just a fancy way of saying non-science letter? Or does it have to be humanities? I have been using a kinesiology letter for my non science letter...not sure if that will suffice.....

I used a letter from an anthropology professor. How is kinesiology not a science?

Idk? They dont count it most of the time in aacomas and REALLY dont count it in amcas

Hmm... interesting. At least they wouldn't count political "science" as a science. That's another discussion, though... 🙄

Even though it doesn't matter, I still don't know why anthropology led to a BA and business administration led to a BS at my school. 😕

Hahaha right? I guess kinesiology is kind of "subjective" when it comes to science. The prof that wrote my letter taught me introduction to coaching. Not really scientific......

Overall I think they consider kinesiology and anthropology to be more applied sciences. Whatever... I did science 😀 I'll take my BA and shut up.

Anybody hear anything recently? It's getting close to the middle of July.

Hey everyone!

I got accepted to NSU-COM yesterday, and gave up my spot today. One of you guys will get the acceptance email soon! I wish you best of luck.

I decided to attend LECOM because I just dont want to take such enormous loans for NOVA (esp now that gov. is not subsidizing loans anymore...).

Also the admissions office at LECOM was extremely nice to me and went through a lot of trouble to offer me a seat. They even wrote me a D.O Letter on site (Because I did not have a rec. letter from an osteopathic physician).

And I must have been the one to get your acceptance man. But I meant to send them something sooner cause I got accepted at PCOM and would rather that school.

Best of luck to anyone else who is still waiting for a seat at NOVA.

Either you or me got his spot, when did you get notified? I found out that I was accepted the 18th.

Does anyone know who puts the coat on you during the white coat ceremony? I heard somewhere that the doctor who wrote your letter of recommedation is supposed to do it but I am not sure if this is correct.

Also, when is the orientation? Does anyone have any information on this?

i think it was about the same day. either way no difference lol. oh and no clue on the orientation or anything like that. best of luck.

I am also wondering when the white coat ceremony and start of classes is.

If anybody as found out, could you please post the information here or send me a PM?

Thanks! 👍

My sister was accepted off of the waitlist this morning. She said she was told that the white coat ceremony is Sunday and that classes start next week. I don't have any more specifics than that at this point.

Thanks! I was allowed into the FB group and have been in contact with Anastasia. I think I have all the info I need.

Writing this from the white coat...good luck to all u guy and dont stress out

I am flying in from Michigan for my interview and I have not been able to get in contact with the school because of the past weekend and tried to contact them today but they closed the school due to Hurricane Isaac. But I wanted to ask where exactly are the interviews being held at? I want to make I fly into a conveniently located airport and able to arrive there on time.

Someone told me it's at the Tampa Student Educational Building and then someone else told me the Admissions building at the main Campus in Ft. Lauderdale?

I am extremely confused.

Hey everyone! Congratulations to everyone who has gotten an acceptance! =) I'm a current OMS-II at TouroCOM in NYC and am scheduled for an interview with Nova as a transfer for 3rd year in a few weeks.

Can anyone whos already had an interview provide some feedback or insight as to their interviewing style as well as questions they ask, any other advice? Thanks everyone and good luck! =)

Not sure how many people are looking at this thread since it is from last cycle and not the current one. You might get some better answers by posting in this cycle's thread. Still, since you are hoping to be a transfer into M3 I would expect them to ask you different questions than someone who is trying to get into medical school.

hey guys i have an interview coming up and my gpa is 3.9 overall, 4.0 nonscience and 3.83 science. but my mcat sucks. i got a 23 first time and 22 second time what do i say when they ask about it?

There is a thread for the 2012-2013 applicant cycle for Nova just FYI. As for your question, depending on your interviewer, they will likely ask you about it. However, just be honest. I had an interview there and had a similar MCAT score with a far lower GPA. It is unfortunate your score went down on the second try (mine was significantly higher than my first score so I can't relate in this regard).

Point is, they invited you for an interview so they obviously think you are a desirable applicant so keep this in mind and don't downplay your efforts. I know for me, I didn't feel like the amount of effort and studying I put into the MCAT reflected in my score but I am not ashamed at my performance because I did put a lot of work into it and it was obviously good enough for an interview. If you were strong in one subject and weaker in another portion of the test, I would mention that, especially for Biology. If you were weak in PS, this likely isn't a big issue for them I've heard. If you have my interviewers, they won't keep badgering you about this if you respond honestly and positively. Don't make any excuses or disparage your efforts and they won't look down upon your answer. Be honest and 🙂

Scanned this thread and didn't see it mentioned.

The NSU secondary says the following:

"I understand that I must meet the minimum admission requirement in order for my application to be considered for admission. These requirements are available for review on the program's website: http://medicine.nova.edu/do/admissions/index.html . To be considered to be an applicant to the DO program, I understand that I must submit both an AACOMAS and an NSU-COM application. I understand that the NSU-COM application fee is non-refundable."

I'm completing my last prerequisite this semester (last English). Should I even consider putting in the secondary? Seems like a possible way to exclude my application and keep the $50.00, despite the fact that the admissions page says that all of the requirements need to be completed prior to matriculation. Secondary fees are stacking up and I don't want it to be a wasted $50.00

Thoughts?

Look at the bold, you answered your own question. You're fine. Just mark as anticipated/future coursework on AACOMAS.

Also, there is a thread for the current cycle. This thread is from last cycle. Just FYI.
