NSU-COM Interview Discussion thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Singinfifi: I ate lunch with the interviewees this past week, I think it was the 6th. If you were in the "small group" then yes. As for acceptance rates, I wish I knew. I guess since I was so curious when I applied I should have researched that. Best of luck. If you do get in, trust me Nova is the place to be.

I am a little confused about my situation at NSU....
I submitted all of my application information back in September and called twice to verify that my application was complete and they confirmed that. My online admissions page also stated that my application had been processed and that they had received my signature page. Lately I have been wondering why I have never heard anything from there so I signed on to my application status check page and it shows an incomplete application that has not even been submitted yet. Has anything like this happened to anyone else? It is rather frustrating because they were one of my top choices and I had no idea that all of this had happened to my application. Thanks!

yeah, that happened to me. I called and they said that they had in fact received it, and then the online site was updated a week later. I also received an interview invite like 5 days after calling, a total of maybe 3 weeks after sending in my secondary. The admissions office there is realllllly slow right now, but they probably have all your stuff, just wait for an interview invite email.

Thanks for the info. I assumed I wasn't the only one.

Some one asked me to post my stats that got me into Nova.

Degree: Biomedical Engineering
GPA: 3.25
MCAT: 29N

I will say that my MCAT is above the average for Nova, so don't get discouraged if you are lower. On that same note, I find it interesting to see how well I am doing compared to some people who come into med school with a 3.8 and a 32 MCAT. Your stats (unfortunately) get you into med school, but after that they pretty much hold no weight in hoe well you can do.

As for the admissions office stuff, as long as they verbally say you have it you should be good. They are like any other admissions office in that they are flooded this time of year.

To those who got accepted- congratulations. Unfortunately I've been waitlisted. 🙁

pullmyfinger: when did you hear and when did you interview at nsu?

don't be too upset, from what i hear typically a good number of candidates who are waitlisted make it in after sometime.

for those who are still waiting, dev told me yesterday that the current class is about 80% full so there are still 40+ spots left and i take it accepted applicants have upcoming 1st/2nd deposits due soon so that might lead to a few more spots opening up in the near future. again he said that for those who interviewed around 1/25 or later it might take till the end of this week or even next week to hear back.

Those who just recently accepted have until March 6th for the first deposit and I think the letter said March 16th for the second deposit. So I would expect waitlist movement as early as March 6th if people decide not to put down the deposit, but that all depends on when they stop doing interviews as well.

Congratulations to those recently accepted!

See you next year.

update: one of the guys I interviewed with on 2/1 just found out he was put on the alternate list...any other news? I'm nervous now!

no news on my end. i'd guess that if they are considering you for admission you'd probably have to wait till next week since that is when the adcom meets next. the adcom meets every 2 wednesdays.

anyone else hear back on anything or speak with rachel/dev recently?

Good luck!

no news here either.

i interviewed on 1/18 (a while back!) and still waiting. 😕

rachel says i should hear back by the end of next week. if not, then i should call her.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you count scorcher, that makes 3 of us from 1/18 that have heard nothing. And the way I look at it, no news is better than bad news. 🙂

Congrats, btw, TheLegendofEdel. Maybe I'll see you in the fall.

So the plot thickens, I just received a letter in the mail today. It wasn't an acceptance letter, but a letter telling me to create a Webstar email account. It states explicitly on the letter "this notice does not imply admittance to NSU." Anybody else get one?

TheLegendofEdel, since you are accepted did you receive one of these?

Cheez5000, I received that little thing in the mail the day before I received my acceptance letter.I don't know if it happened with everyone, so I don't want to give you a false hope or anything. Best of luck!

You guys I'm terrified right now, I called nova thursday and a mysterious gentleman named "dev" gave me an interview for Monday but I never got the confirmation packed and I don't even know what time it's at!! Now my family is making fun of me and saying they don't think I really have an interview and I'm going to go there and they'll be like.. who are you? LOL omg yeah I'm freaking out..........

Oh good so he does work for NSU.... do you think it's ridiculously late to get an interview now? I think they're just doing it for fun.........

Hey FLpk1girl 86, don't worry about the admissions in NOVA, it is so screwed up right now that they are probably going to stop interviews by the end of February. I actually got a phone call from Dev when I was on my Touro-NY interview, and he left a message telling me to e-mail him what day would be good. I e-mailed him 2 weeks in advance, and I never received any word of whether or not he got my e-mail or if I was going to be interviewed. I called the admissions office for like 4 days with no answer. Finally, the friday before my interview I got in touch and they said I had an interview for Tuesday, but the packet was never sent out. When I got to NOVA on tuesday, my name wasn't even on the list of interviewed students, which made me feel very reassured that this school wanted me to interview (Mind you, I'm from New York so I had already spent close to $600 on flight, hotel, and rental car up to that point). But rest assured, even though the admissions process was very unorganized, the tour, interview, and speakers were great.

So in conclusion, you have an interview, it's not too late, and best of luck on your interview.

-Scott

PS: If I remember correctly, the whole thing began at 9AM so be there around 8:30-8:45AM. (Someone please confirm this)

I withdrew my acceptance so one of you will get my spot.

FLgirl, my interview started at 9:00am. Nova didn't send me an interview package till the day of my interview. I was at Nova when my roommate called me from Memphis telling me that my interview package had arrived. When I got there, my name wasn't on the list. So I had to tell them that I had been invited for an interview by Dev and we got things straighten out. If you want to confirm your interview date, I would call Linda Ferris. Dev seems like he didn't care or didn't know what he was doing. I called there two weeks after my interview to ask if the committee had made a decision on me and Dev said no decision had been made without informing me that my application was incomplete b/c they had my LORs in the wrong stack.

Haha that sounds insane! I'm probably going to spend 10 hours driving and around $400 total, and miss an exam and lab, so yeah it's an investment.. thanks for the reassurance. 🙂

Thanks, at least I know the time now. And I agree, I mean Dev sounded like a great guy, but he might be a little new to the job. Oh well, I got the interview I've been praying for!! YAY!!

Dev and Racheal do the best they can with little resources and usually little help outside of Racheal's secretary.

With that being said I don't think I have ever heard anyone say "Wow, admissions made my life easier" from NSU or any school. During my app process KCUMB was the least organized, so take that for what it is worth.

If you get an interview, do come, each year is different but last year we had a lot of waitlist movement. And interviews should be done through middle of march as they just asked us for more tour guides in March.

Good Luck All, and as always if you have any questions about NSU PM me I'll do my best to answer.

Hey, FLpk1girl86, since you'll be doing a lot driving, I'm guess you're going to be super tired. Here's a few ideas:

1. If you're a coffee person, make sure you get some off-campus because they didn't offer it at the lunch.

2. If you're driving early, early morning to avoid traffic, then you could catch some ZZZzzz's in the parking lot. There's a parking pass in the interview packet, but I heard people were okay parking without it.

Here's a summary of the day's events:
8:45am: arrive at Terry Bldg (nice, new bldg with big fountain; right off of University); enter bldg, turn to right, go through door on right

9ish: Introduction video/talk about NSUCOM (curriculum, school in general...)

10ish: split into two groups. one group tours first and then interviews. the other group does opposite.

12noon: lunch

1pm:Big school tour (Library and Rec center)

2pm: Group sit down with Dean

I was done around 3-3:30pm that day.

Besides the agenda and parking pass for the day, the interview packet also included xeroxed articles about their involvement in DOCare, about Dean Silvagni, and the med students' work in the community...all stuff you can look up.

One last thing: be prepared for delays, mix-ups, or some form of disorganization. Stay cool when these things happen and you should have a good day.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck!

Hey, thanks! I just got into the hotel and settled down and I feel a lot better! The hotel is pretty close to campus so I don't think I'll have to worry about traffic... but I will definitely have some coffee before I go 🙂

Uhh I hope I get to interview first and then tour, otherwise I'll be queasy during the entire tour.. the campus seemed huge when I passed by hopefully there's not too much walking..

Anyway, thanks for the advice, good luck to you to 🙂

good luck 🙂

i ended up interviewing in the first group...what a relief! the tour isn't really long or tiring. the med students sort of walk around and chat with you, and you can ask them questions about their experience at NSU and etc. so the tour might come in handy.

The tour of the actual school building is not really that much walking. Aside from that tour, you also take a bus tour once everyone has interviewed, which isn't a lot of walking, but was probably the biggest selling point for me. You'll see what I mean when you get there. Best of luck to you!

FLpk1girl86, you'll do fine on your interview. Is it today?? I didn't check before starting this post. If it was today, I'm sure you did fine. Very laid back and low stress...my two interviewers even told me who'd play 'good cop/bad cop.'

Many of us did not receive an interview packet, so do worry about that. I was pretty ticked off about that, but I've been told not to judge the school on it's admissions office. Aside from admissions, the school was great. And you won't have to deal with admissions as a current student, right?!

Let us know how you did. Good luck!

So rachel finally just called me back just now. She said they're withholding acceptances until they can sort everything out because they are so swamped, so it still might take ANOTHER few weeks. DAMNIT!! Oh well 🙄

She also said that their second deposit is due by March 15 and a lot of people usually drop out by then, so they'll have a better idea....Hope that doesn't mean I have to wait another month to find out!

Good luck to everyone

Wow. Just wow. Thanks for the update, at least I know not to run to my mailbox every day.

absolutely, same here. I even check when I'm not expecting everything, just "in case" lol

Good Luck to all of you who are waiting for an answer, I hope all of you get in and become my classmates.

Haha!

Any news anyone?

I interviewed on 2/1, and like all of you, have been waiting impatiently. Anyways, I spoke to rachel today and she said that they probably will not give any more news until March 15th...Now I don't know if that means that the class is already full and they need people to withdraw, or if the class is almost full and they are going to try and fill the last spots with the best of the best..who knows..but she made it seem as though the wait will be quite a bit longer..which sucks!

Congrats to those who have recently been accepted and hang in there to those on the waiting list and still waiting to hear. I know that waiting to hear from the admissions office is probably the hardest thing you've ever done, but be thankful that all you have to do is wait. In the meanwhile, have fun, go out, get your mind off of things. Believe me, this is the biggest chunk of "free" time that you will have. Make the best of it.

is it realistic to think that you'll get in if you have an interview at the end of feb? (25th) Anyone have any idea on how in state vs out of state affects later interviews and acceptances?

It seems the dean has put all decisions on hold for a while. That might be to your advantage. Strong preference for in state. Good luck.

Although a greater number of in=state students are interviewed in a year, a greater percentage of interviewed out-of-state students are granted admission. This year, there will be more out-of-state students in the class than in-state students. In estimation, NSU is anticipating approximately 35 seats to be open after the 2nd deposit is due.

Not sure where you got those stats, but they're nowhere near the ones posted on here (SDN) regarding interview vs acceptance rates. Not saying the ones floating around are accurate, just saying they showed a strong in state preference post interview. Something like a 91% acceptance rate for in state interviewees...

I'm really curious as to where you're getting your info about this years class. If what you are saying is true and the other info on this site is accurate, that will mean there has been a drastic change in the makeup of accepted students from this year compared to years past
. That's unlikely.

The M1 class had a "Dean's Hour" yesterday where students convene to hear a lecture/presentation from administration about various topics. During our Dean's hour, we were informed that the incoming class makeup was different from years past and it seemed like Nova was leaning towards accepting a greater percentage of out-of-state residents (60% OOS this year). It may be true that the statistics were unfounded or inaccurate, but this is information came from administration.

Just wanted to confirm that when they say ~35 seats, that would probably mean that they would accept some more kids than that to make sure they fill up, right? Anyone have any figures on that, how many people do they accept for each seat to make sure the seat is actually filled in the Fall? The approximate numbers I have is that each year 400 are accepted from a class of 200, so that is 2/seat but I'd guess that this late in the admissions cycle that number might go down?!?!

Also, did the administration give any idea on when interviewing is ending? Anyone know? Some people said it would end earlier (like February) but others said that it would continue into March.
