NSU-COM Interview Discussion thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is off topic but did any of you guys have MD interviewers? In such a situation how would you explain your reasons for choosing DO and what you find to be the pros of being a DO? Personally, I think it is better to express your real views and explain them- the way I look at it we're all entitled to our own views. Also, I have applied to MD schools which I mentioned on my NSU secondary so I would say something like end of the day the result is the same. They're all doctors and all in it to help their patients, what differs is the approach you take with your patients. I truly believe (from my volunteer experiences and shadowing) that DOs tend to be more concerned about the physician-patient relationships and do try to gather more background and situational information from a patient to get a "fuller" view of their problem. Also, helps in making a patient feel safe and better understood.

How does that sound? Any recommendations? Would especially appreciate advice from anyone who has been in this situation at NSU.

That's a good beginning. Many people who know about osteopathic medicine have that approach. It'll be helpful if you have an example or two from your shadowing experiences.

hey, anyone still waiting for an interview? im still waiting for one.

yea i am still waiting, havent gotten a rejection letter yet, they said thats a good thing,

Neither my husband or I has received an interview, hold or rejection from Nova. I called a couple times a few weeks apart and I was told that my application was currently being reviewed. This was back in October and November. It's a moot point now but I just thought I would chime in.

as well. not a word. actually, that's not true. every so often, i'll get a really generic email saying they've 'received my unofficial transcript,' etc, but no real person contact. they haven't returned my phone call(s)... is anyone in here that got a later interview last cycle?? tips??😕

I didn't have a late interview last year, but last year they interviewed into March.

Actually, it would be great to sit in on a lecture if there is anything going on at that time/day. (Not sure if I'll be let in though!😀) Again, I'd be at NSU by 4:30ish on Thursday, 1/24.

We may still be in class at that time. We will be having a type of Neuroanatomy Review fro Dr. Dribbin (one of the better teachers). Steele Auditorium located in the HPD. Hard to miss and if you ask someone, everyone knows where it is.

I interviewed in mid February last year and got an acceptance, so don't give up hope guys. Like the guys signature above, it just takes one. Good Luck! Anyone interviewing on Feb 13th, if so I will be your tour guide.

That's good to hear. I will be getting in around 5:00 PM and will try to get to Steele Aud. Just wondering if I need any permission (or an ID) to get into the HPD and/or the Auditorium? Also, in case I just end up walking around is there anything I should definitely see and that I will be allowed to see? If anyone is free it would be great to meet you on the 24th!

Just wanted to let everyone know that the adcom met today. Those of you who interviewed on 1/11/08, we should receive a phone call tomorrow with acceptance/rejections.

To anyone who has had an interview at NSU...I received an interview invite last Thursday and sent the reply in that same day. It is now Wednesday and I have not heard anything back about whether or not I got the date that I chose even though I have left voice mails in addition to the email response. Do they give you the date via email or snail mail? Just curious because I chose 2/1 as my date and that is next week, so it would be kind of a good thing to know. Also, what is the mood like during the NSU interviews? Thanks for the help.

Yep, I flew from the west coast to Miami for my NSU interview, with your current level of confidence in your interview date. It's hard to believe the interview is real when you don't get a letter or package etc. But I showed up and they were expecting me. It's REALLY hard to get information from the admissions office.

That said, it's a mistake to judge NSU by its admissions office. You only have to deal with them for this getting in part. The wise candidate judges NSU by its rec center. (Mostly kidding.)

The mood is hard to describe. The interview is short with a (imho) soft "good cop / bad cop" vibe. I liked the faculty, but for me the students were the best part. Hopefully you'll get to meet the dean, who apparently is a hoot, but he was gone the day I interviewed.

Go kill it!

So from what you are saying..even without any formal response, I should just show up on the day that I chose?..lol. That works for me I guess. Thank you for the response and the encouragement. I hope all goes well for you as well!!

The reason you probably haven't heard a response from NSU is because Rachel Weiner, the admissions rep for the med school, is out of town until the 25th. She is the person I communicated with before I interviewed. The only reason I know this is because I recently tried contacting her via e-mail and got an automated reply. In the e-mail she said to contact Linda Ferris or Luz Rodriguez for any questions. Their e-mails are as follows: [email protected] and [email protected]. If they don't respond to your e-mail you could try calling the admissions office and specifically asking for them.

I hope this helps.

Has anyone from the Jan15 interview heard anything yet????

My phone is not ringing. This process has turned me into a gerbil. That is all.

Mine either....Looks like I have been lied to. This sucks. I tried calling and I guess Rachel doesn't get back until Monday, so I now suspect we won't get a call until then. Sorry to get everyone's hopes up....

I have not heard anything, except I received a certified letter but I was not home. I will have to wait 'til Monday to find out for sure. Good luck. 😀

couple quick questions:

1) any interview advice tips (especially since the interview feedback site is down)??

2) how long after interviewing do you hear back, on average?

3) I'm interviewing later this week, and I'm in-state...any idea of acceptance percentage of those interviewed around this time? (50%? 90%?)

Thanks!

1) Be yourself. Use the interview feedback as a guide, but the interview is your chance to stand out. If you mirror answers from others, you'll just be a face in the crowd. Don't sound rehearsed. Smile, use eye contact, firm handshake, mirror the actions of your interview(s).

2) As little as one to about three weeks. It depends when the committee meets and when Dean Silvagni is able to sign off on acceptances.

3) Not sure about this year, but depending on your credentials, it ranges. NSU interviews more instate applicants than out of state applicants, so the percentage of acceptances instate is lower. I know of at least a dozen students that interviewed at this time and were admitted.

Best of luck.

Couldn't agree more. I interviewed last week and really enjoyed the whole experience. The interviewers tried to take a good cop/bad cop approach (as is the case with many other people), though the person being the "bad cop" was very professional. Neither interviewer was particularly intimidating and the questions were not too difficult. I would use the interview feedback as soon as it is available again just to go through the questions. Mine were straight from there. Also the interview is open file and the interviewers had definitely been through my personal statement and activities, so I'd recommend going through your AACOMAS application.

Good luck! 👍

I interviewed on 1/15 and had the same experience as masalamonkey with the interviewers using the good cop/bad cop approach. Be yourself and Be honest and you'll do well. 🙂

Received my acceptance package this morning. Hope to see a lot of you in August. 😎

ahhhhg... missed a certified package from NSU today. Have to go to the post office tomorrow to pick it up. Fingers crossed!

Congratulations explorer!

I should find out next week. T - 10 days...

Accepted! So glad to be done w/ the whole admissions process. See y'all in the fall.

hey, I am interviewing on February 1st..and as I posted earlier last week, I have still yet to receive the information package or any other type of correspondence (despite numerous emails and phone calls). I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the name or location of the building where all of the interviewees meet and if there is anything relevant that I have to bring with me for the interview? Thanks a lot!

The building you have to report to for your interview is Terry Building. You don't have to bring anything with you - just tell them that you didn't get any informational packet, hopefully they will give you a nice folder with a notepad etc. Even I didn't get any information packet - for my interview. I called ahead though to make sure they were expecting me there! there were a couple of others in my situation at the interview day... G'luck!

Yes, no idea why this happens but it happens! I took a portfolio with me but they gave us one over there. The building is on 3200 South University Drive, 5-story building with huge columns. When you go through the automatic doors make a right and past all the glass displays is a door to enter the admin/admissions office. Good luck!

I appreciate it!! The last two posts have been very helpful!

YAY I'm in! See you all in the fall!!!!!

Congrats pamkitti. See you in Aug. Everybody join the facebook group... it's under: NSUCOM Class of 2012 (there's another one, but this is the real one).

hey all....I have an interview on february 4th...

  1. I was wondering if it really matters what airport is better to fly into, considering they are both about the same distance from nova (fort l. and miami). Miami is a bit cheaper than ft l.
  2. What time is the interview day is usually over with, or what time you were done on your interview day???....I need to schedule my flight home accordingly.
  3. I am also one of those students that did not receive an interview packet either, or know much about the interview process as a whole. Are they panel interviews? 1 on 1? Will other interviewees be in the room with me?
  4. And finally the age old questions---> what types of questions were you asked by your interviewers??
Thank you !!!

I am also interviewing at NSU on feb 1. 🙂 I have not received my interview package either, but it sounds like a pretty common theme. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find the interview feedback section for NSU, I can't seem to find it anywhere and would like to see some of the typical interview questions. Thanks for any help!

Has anyone who have interviewed on Jan 18th heard anything at all?

1. I found it much easier to fly into FLL than the Miami airport.

2. Most of them are done in the early afternoon.

3. They are usually three interviewers to one and you are not interviewing with other students in the room.

4. Check out the interview part of SDN for a list of previously asked questions.

Best of luck.

I haven't guts to call and ask if everything is in. But from my record, everything should be in. I just feel so nervous to the point where I feel sick. :scared: Well good luck to us all :luck:

they won't tell you much more than your file is complete--they don't give away the status of your app on the phone.
