NSU Master of Biomedical Science 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi! I'm pre dental as well. I'm not too sure what the difference is but I did watch some videos on both and it seems like they are both helpful in getting you into health professional schools. I applied to the Master of Biomedical Sciences program though and my app is under review. Let me know if you end up applying as well! 🙂
Ah good luck!! I'm guessing you have already taken your dat??

Hi! I am currently applying to both master programs. The only big difference I can see is that the biomedical program has a guarantee interview for med/dental school if you fulfill the requirements.
Thanks! I think I’ll apply to the other one too. Do you know when the deadlines are? I couldn’t find that information.

Spoke to admissions today, if you meet the critera (gpa and dat score) you will still be interviewed.

Hello everyone! As far as I know (I was in the program last year) the masters of biomedical sciences (MBS) program with the true bridge has been CANCELLED. The dean gave her reasons for this, which I do not agree with but oh well. Nonetheless, I did hear they would be making a regular masters program in its place without the true bridge and that it would be open to many pre-health students, not just those wanting to go into med and dental. However, this was just what they were saying at the time and idk how much the idea has evolved or if they’re even going to carry out. Unfortunately, the students in the current (and last) MBS program do not know much either. Your best bet is to get the info straight from the source and contact NSU College of Medical Sciences. But If one thing is for sure, there is no longer a true bridge program from the masters to the medical school. 🙁 sorry guys!

Just got accepted today! In between going here or to LECOM. So is there no linkage at all now with KPCOM?

Edit: I should add I am pre-med. Posting here as this thread seems much more active.

Congrats ! Did you have to interview? Also which program did you apply for ?

Nope no interview. Just a phone call with an acceptance today. I applied for the Master of Biomedical Science assuming that is the "post-bacc" program, but elsewhere on SDN it sounds like there's a different post-bacc program?

Did it take long for your acceptance? I’m stuck waiting for my recommendation letters through this crisis.
I also believe the program you applied for is a one year non thesis master program .

I applied March 10th, so did not take too long. My letters were already in their system as I had applied to the DO school this cycle.

Welp... I applied for the program listed on the AAMC website. Do you have a link for the true post-bacc program?

I tried to search for the post- bacc program, but no luck. Here is the link for the Biomedical masters program though .

Yeah this is the one I applied to. Another thread mentioned that they don't advertise the post-bacc. Why everything is so hush hush at NSU is so bothersome lol. I feel like I may have made my decision between here and LECOM

I am not sure but I agree. I had to search high and low for deadlines . Is the Lecom program a post-bacc as well ?

I believe so. The term post-bacc is so arbitrary lol, but it is listed as such on AAMC's website. It's a one year Masters of Medical Science and offers a guaranteed interview if you meet their academic requirements.

Go look at the LECOM dicussion post for the MMS! Which campus is it anyway?

Hi everyone, I applied on March 27 and received my acceptance today ! Do you guys how many people get accepted that are on a dental track ?

Congrats! I am not sure but I am also predental, just waiting for my recommendation letters .

Oh I already know everything about LECOM's program. It's NSU's that is confusing me. I feel like I saw information on the website that is no longer listed there lol. Accepted at Erie 🙂

Accepted on yesterday via email ! Pre-Med track. Applied on 3/18. I’m still waiting to hear back from a few more programs but really excited

Also didn’t see it online so emailed Shemeka from admissions about the guaranteed interview. You must have 3.5 MBS gpa and 505 MCAT to qualify.

Beat me to it. Shemeka sent me this as well. At this time it seems like I will be giving up my spot here. I hope it goes to one of you! Good luck 😀

Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way ! lol

for those of you that applied, there wasn't a spot to submit a personal statement or resume on the application, did you submit that separately? Also where do you mail the LOR's to?

If I remember correctly, you are able to submit those things after you submit your application. After you submit, you can then see a required documents tab which tells you what more you need to submit. You also have to include 2 additional short essays in addition to the personal statement

Are you guys still applying to Nova MBS? Do they still have the bridge? I thought they didn’t

I called them and told them I wanted them to consider my resume and personal statement for the application and emailed it to them. As far as I remember there was nowhere to upload these through the application itself.

That's what I thought, thank you! Did you have the supplemental questions after you submitted the app?

I received a phone call this morning stating that my application is complete and has been sent to the admission committee. Hopefully I can get an acceptance 😊

For those who received acceptances: have you already taken your MCAT?
My retake keeps getting canceled and it scares me to think about studying for an MCAT while handling MBS courses.
Also, how long after documents were submitted did you receive a response? Thanks in advance!
I was accepted with GRE. The GRE is offering at home options right now!
My app was completed on 3/18. I was accepted on 4/8.

Is this program really cancelled because I just Submitted an app. For fall 2020

The old program is canceled. They revamped and made some changes. I think the major change is that there is not a guarantee into their professional schools, but they guarantee an interview as long as you maintain a certain GPA. I spoke to one of the counselors directly.

I just finished my application, I was told that if they have at least one they could begin reviewing it.

When I asked about the deadline, they said there is none because the program is rolling admissions. They have a fall and spring cycle so this could be why.

Hey all, just finished the NSU MBS zoom open house. Here are the notes I jotted down. Feel free to expand upon these. There’s another Zoom open house this upcoming Wednesday, 4/22.

Key takeaways:
  1. This is a revamped program; now it has no guaranteed bridge into NSU grad programs, unlike the past MBS
  2. Performance guarantees interviews at NSU graduate program (see #6)
  3. Guaranteed interviews will take place after the fall semester
  4. AA program accepting up to 10 MBS students for interviews, but MD program not limiting the number of interviews for achieving MBS students
  5. NOT affiliated with NSU’s DO school (NSU DO postbacc certificate has different teachers; however, students encouraged to also apply to both NSU’s DO and MD programs while in the MBS)
  6. As long as you meet the academic requirements for each individual program, performance guarantees interviews at most NSU HPD graduate programs. Therefore, can simultaneously apply to and interview for NSU’s PA, AA, MD, Dental programs, etc… I say “most” programs because it looks like there’s no interview agreement with NSU’s DO program
  7. No formal shadowing component, but possible to shadow depending on whom program director can connect you with
  8. Most courses will be just MBS students enrolled, but if you take a business elective, then you will be with business students. Unique agreement with Dental program for top pre-dental MBS students to take Spring classes with dental students (sorry, I zoned out during this explanation, so perhaps someone else can clarify this point)
  9. Class schedule: every day, mostly at night, mostly online; program is "catered" to learning style, so there are options to attend morning in-person classes
  10. Histology is the only mandatory course with a lab component
  11. Seat deposit is due 2 weeks after acceptance
  12. Class size = 70 full-time students
  13. Unique curriculum: mandatory Kaplan prep course, mandatory professional/interview skills course

Covid impact: as of 4/18/20, the plan is to proceed as if the pandemic will not impact in-person registration and academic advisory meeting. However, program can be moved online since most classes already have online component.
  • registration, academic advisory: August 10 (tentative)
  • first day of classes: August 17 (tentative)
  • each student will be set up with MD advisor

For the those who are pre-med, in order to get an interview for NSU’s MD program, you need 3.0 pre-program GPA, 3.5 MBS GPA, and a 503 MCAT.
