NSUCOM Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So when is everyone moving down? I've actually got a reservation at Palm Trace Landings and I'll be moving my stuff down on July 1 from Alabama. I'm planning on coming back home for a few weeks to chill and then fly back around July 27 or so.

If you are coming from alabama and take I10 through Tallahassee message me on here and I may be able to meet up with you for a quick coffee or something. I might be moving down around the same time though.

wooo!!!! 27 more days until i move down....cannot wait. Gonna stay down there for the summer, hopefully find a part time job for two months until school starts, but other than that just chill out.

hopefully we can get a bunch of us together to meet up before school starts so we can have some fun on the beaches

I may end up moving down early and trying to find a group that does strongman training. I'm not much of a just sitting on the beach kind of person, but I will probably go down with my brother and sail once in a while and maybe hit a marlins game up.

if strongman means benching 150 and curling 25 per arm, then i could totally be up for strongman training....🙄🙄

That'd be cool, I'll have to see what our plans are though. We may just push on through and head straight to Ft Lauderdale. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone though!

Do any current students (or 2013ers that have looked already) know where to get decent, not too expensive furniture? I am not going to bring down my whole bedroom set from upstate NY, I am just going to buy all new stuff.

Any suggestions? I am going down this weekend.

Thanks!

The only place i really looked at while down there was ikea. They had some reasonably priced furniture. There is also walmart in plantation which I'm sure has some decent prices on furniture.

I've bought some stuff from Rooms To Go and Ashley Furniture. They have some descent furniture that doesn't break the bank, depending on what you get. I believe they have a Rooms To Go about 15 min from the NSU campus.

I'm looking for a fairly serious workout partner myself. Was thinking about migrating from power lifting to strong man as I finish nursing this injury. I'll see if I can talk to Tom Mutaffis ('07 North American Strongman 200lb Nat Champ) as he used to live/train down in Ft. Lauderdale. So I take it you're a lifter?

On another topic, I've found myself an apartment at Sunforest.. right across the street from the university. Anyone else living there?

Got the financial package, the info is in webstar. I know people were waiting on it!

I got my fin aid award too, all loans yayyyyyyyyyyy, but it isn't for the total COA b/c grad plus loans aren't listed. Are they supposed to show up? And now I have an unsatisfied requirement listed "HPD RESIDENCY STATUS NOT DETERMINED Required "
I sent in my stack of residency proof months ago.

For those who chose Lake Pointe at Jacaranda to live at what made you choose them over other places?

I went apt hunting this weekend, and didn't get a chance to look there. I'm currently entertaining the idea of a 3/2 or 2/2 at Palm Trace, Water Terrace, Laurels at Jacaranda, or Verona...

Thanks again aterry for posting your list of apts, it was very helpful when looking.

We are trying to get in at Lake Pointe at Jacaranda because they have the nicest apartments and they deal they are running right now is great (2 months free...so a $1345/month 2/2 becomes 1120/month!). They also had the most reasonable deposits and pet fees. I have a ton of pictures of lakepointe courtesy of LinkDO if you want them. Here is a link to the photo album on google photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/ashley.terry/LakepointeAtJacaranda?feat=directlink

Dude, already sounding like a great lifting bud. I just reserved my place in sunforest as well. I'm doing a standard powerlifting 5/3/1 workout right now. I've decided to stick raw because I don't want to buy all that gear mainly. It'd be awesome to find people to do an event day with. I know there is a powerlifting gym (southside barbell) in Lake Worth. There is also a group that rains at the World Gym in Ft. Lauderdale. To answer your question, yep I'm a lifter and it isn't something I want to give up. I'm pretty weak right now but we'll see. I recently hit 252 on the scales at 6'5". I'd like another 10 or 15 pounds of solid mass and to start doing event training. I've never done it on a consistent basis. I'm working on buying a sled or a prowler now for recovery and GPP. Just PM me sometime and we can talk.

Hey, there have different weight classes for a reason. That being said, bench and curling aren't really important motions for it anyway. I rarely do a normal curling motion. I try to avoid most isolation exercises (preacher curls, leg extensions) and stick to large compound exercises. Lots and lots and lots of pullups with different grips and kroc rows are where my biceps get hit most. I don't have the biggest arms in the world though, that is for sure.

Yeah, I was wondering why my "need" section was more than a few dollars larger than my fin aid award. 😕 When do we find out how to close the gap, so to speak?

Did you guys get an email for this stuff or what? I haven't heard jack from anyone about it.

MossPoh- go check webstar. Its under the financial aid section under award. If there is nothing there, I would call financial aid.

Beachblonde-your contribution doesn't necessarily mean anything (I called financial aid over this today). I would call them and have them explain everything on the award. They were very helpful and patient with me today. Their number is 954-262-3380. Good luck!

By the way, if anyone cares, I submitted a lease to Lakepointe today! Yay! Our lease starts June 30th, but we won't move down until mid-July. I am super excited to get our of KY and down to Florida!

Hey schussboarder, ill be moving down really early too! June 22nd I think. So Im ready to go hit the beaches or grab a drink with our free time.

Congrats Terry! I just got your email!

Yeah, I have to close this gap too! Trying to figure it all out!

Looks like I'll be down June 17th now. I wanted beginning of July but I felt like I was testing fate by not just taking the apartment I wanted when it was offered.

Hmm. All loans for me too except I still have this message "
HPD RESIDENCY STATUS NOT DETERMINED"

Then it tells you to click the message to see what to do about it and there is nothing. So, hopefully I'll be counted as instate fairly soon since that is a new message.

does anyone else's say est family contribution of $10,017? lol what the heck, as much as i wish there was, there won't be any family contribution except good ol' uncle sam's!

Isn't that what someone puts during the fafsa application process? I'm new to this whole financial aid thing, so I could be wrong!

My EFC was listed at just under 4k. Like you, my parents will be contributing $0.00 so I'm not entirely sure how this calculation was made. Perhaps if I inform my parents that the government says so, they'll have to loan me the dough!

Mine was about $5500 and I made very little money last year (good ol' non-profit work!). They said at financial aid that you can still borrow up to the 79k figure. I don't think it has a significant effect on your stafford loan amount that you will receive. I did not include any parent information as I am an independent. Anyone know any good information about glad plus loans? I need to start that process. Remember when taking your stafford loans that you have a lifetime maximum of 224k. I was awarded a total of 57k in staffords so if you take that each year then you get awfully darn close....

I do find it odd with the family contribution thing. I am going to get a little help from my parents and there is nothing in that bracket for me. My parents offered to pay room and board though...Oh well.

Yea mine is Estimated Family Contribution = $6,663.00.

I've been independent for about 2-3 years now and my parents wont be helping me for med school. I have no clue where they are calculating these numbers for us... cause I didnt put down ANY parental information on FAFSA.

I sent my final transcripts to them and they are saying they don't have them. I'm kind of confused. I feel like there isn't much communication between the various areas at nova.

i'm in the same boat..been out of undergrad since 2005 and independent the whole time. didn't put down any parental info on the fafsa.

i have the same questions as aterry. which lender should we choose for grad plus? from what i understand we can't accept the package until we pick a lender right? i dunno i gotta call fin aid soon.

I'm pretty sure they calculate the EFC for independent students from your own individual savings, investments, etc. My EFC is about 20% of my savings.

And how do I pick a lender? Just choose one?

I'm pretty sure they calculate the EFC for independent students from your own individual savings, investments, etc. My EFC is about 20% of my savings.

Yeah, it seems to me that the EFC calculated here is simply what they expect us to contribute personally. Which is really about right for me.

I sent my final transcripts to them and they are saying they don't have them. I'm kind of confused. I feel like there isn't much communication between the various areas at nova.

Isn't the bureaucracy of a larger university wonderful? 🙂 I had the same message even though I also sent my final transcripts. I may just place a phone call tomorrow.

oh my lord i'll be in a buttload of debt. this better work out: brief to zero patient contact, procedures, cool colleagues, helpful nurses, clean modern hospital/office, 250k-300k salary in a good region with three months vacation, big house, nice car, hot wife and smart unspoiled well behaved kids and three dogs and a cat.

I've decided I'll just avoid getting married. I'll work really hard for like 3 months and then take a month off. Nice but small house where I work and then get a sweet apartment in some european city. I'll go there for a couple of weeks and work on my book and then come back. I'm thinking Berlin will have low housing costs for a while.

Due to economic times, the NSU-COM can no longer offer a full tuition scholarship for DO students. Recognizing the importance and our commitment to the public health arena, we have negotiated a minimal tuition charge of $60. per credit starting in the Fall 2009 term.

SERIOUSLY!?!? This is such a huge selling point for so many students during the admissions process, including myself! I hope they change their minds. Do economic times really factor into this?

I had some questions regarding NOVA and i was hoping that i came to the right thread because I will be applying this upcoming cycle. My brother lives in Boca Raton and I love the area and i can see myself living there and practicing medicine(but then again I'm sure a lot of people can lol). I was just curious how different ft. lauderdale is from boca? I always fly into ft. lauderdale airport to visit my brother but i have never really seen ft. lauderdale. I was also curious if NOVA was OOS friendly? Im a NJ resident. any input is greatly appreciated.

Nova is private, so yes it is OOS friendly. South Florida is essentially 3 counties of urban sprawl, so no, there really isn't TOO much of a difference. There tends to be different groupings of people within each area but nothing too cut and dry. Boca was always a little more Jewish and retirement oriented it seemed...That nice little stereotype of the little old jewish lady seems to come into mind, probably because my little old jewish grandmother lived in boca for a while. All you have to do is see yourself in the area to study. You can cross that bridge of working there when it gets there. I have no intention of it for the same reason my dad left; he was tired of the sue happy population and low pay compared to where we moved. In the end, it is your residency program that will determine where you live more than your medical school. I forget the statistic, but a pretty large chunk of people find their first gig within 40 or 50 miles of where they did their residency.

Oh and the MPH thing...60 dollars an hour is like nothing. You're talking what, like 6 grand for a degree? Still pretty cheap if that is your bag. I think it is kind of a worthless degree, but I can see where if you are really into the primary care and underserved thing that it is useful. It is the same everywhere, but Florida is taking an especially hard hit when it comes to funding academics. While Nova is private, they still get plenty of state money. Multiple universities in Florida are completely cutting certain programs, in addition to raising tuition and the possibility of altering the "bright futures" scholarship program here. It is a mess down here, so I do think it is a financial thing. I live in Tallahassee, so I'm immersed in the politics during session and was listening to a representative from near Orlando rant about some education stuff during breakfast.

thank you for your detailed response. I am excited to be applying this upcoming cycle and i will be visiting the schools this summer.

Registration is up

Im having trouble registering, im able to pull up the page of all the M1 classes but I cant select any of them. Anybody else having this problem?

The system was a little goofy... PM me if ya can't get it figured out, Yaba

I don't understand why we have to register anyway. Seems like one more step to screw up. We all take the same courses...

I was just discussing this with someone else, its not like I can go part time or choose to take some classes at another campus. Just seems pointless and just to add salt to the wound, a late fee would be given if you dont do it by June 5th.

Yea, oh well. I seem to be good at whining about stuff. I should cool it down lately. 😛

Ok. Just registered for classes, accepted financial aid award and applied for Grad Plus loans all in the space of a half hour. It is a little disturbing how easy it is so be about 80k in debt and ready for class to begin. Let me know if yall need any help with it all. Anyone know when we are supposed to purchase books?

Took out my 80k too. I'm ballin' out of control

80? Jebus. I haven't taken any out yet but I was thinking maybe 50

I can understand that $60/credit is still very inexpensive for a master's program, but quite frankly I agree. A free MPH is a huge selling point for applicants, I know even simply the possibility of that opportunity made a difference to me. I think it would be more appropriate to not offer it to future classes, but it's a bit frustrating to place the restriction upon this coming year's class after it was marketed so heavily.

Agree as well on all points 👍👍
I understand that the University might be under a financial strain. BUT....I don't like having something promised stripped away. Not everything in our next several years of education is going to go as planned. I'm just miffed that they stepped off on the wrong foot.

Yea, well I don't think many universities in Florida ever thought they'd have to dump entire programs until the beginning of this year. Right now, us having to pay a little for an MPH is probably last on their list of concerns. While it is a huge selling point for some people, there will always be a list of people that will sign up regardless of the carrot that is an MPH.

I cannot figure out how to register! Every time I select the Fall 2009 term, it brings me back to the menu instead of giving me a subject box with "COM" as an option. I tried then going to "registration-drop/add" but it still does not give me the option. Anyone else having this problem?

I haven't had that problem. I would email Leslie immediately as the due date for that is June 5th. I thought I would post instructions on how to do the grad plus loans since I have gotten a few questions:

Go to nova.edu
then go to the admissions tab, then to financial aid
Look on the left side and click on grants and loans
Choose graduate students
Scroll down to the middle of the page and choose Grad Plus
There is information about it and then you scroll down and choose apply for grad plus
It will then take you to the Sallie Mae website and you go from there.

Good luck!

What do we do once we select the lender and make our decision on webstar? Will we receive an email from the lender or do we have to contact them?
