Hi everyone- I am goin to nycom in the fall too- cant wait to meet all of you. Is anyone looking for a roomate? 🙂

i called nycom financial office today and they said it's not necessary to include your parents info

Hey,
Does anyone know when classes start this fall or when orientation begins?

Just got the application for DPC with some descriptions. Nothing else is in there though.

I did not get it 🙁 🙁 🙁

Last year classes started on aug 22nd and orientation was on the 21st. Also if anyone is looking for roomates check out my thread under the osteopathic forums

guys, beware.

Dean Scandalis spoke to us yesterday and the administration seems very unreasonable about a few topics.

First of all, it appears they are doing away with streaming as we know it. Now I agree we can't be an internet school, streaming is a nice tool to relearn topics and it's an option in case you have to miss a class for something. It appears that we will only be able to stream just before an exam.

They are also doing away with the retest policy which means if you have a bad day and fail an exam you're going to summer school...this is even worse in 2nd year when it will interfere with boards studying...

good luck new people.

This is very bad about streaming 🙁

Alright that's going to scare a lot people because you left out all the details. I wasn't goin to post about this anymore but you leave me no choice because what you said may very well scare away new students.

Streaming: The problem is that a lot of people don't come to class. Scandalis said that for one of 2009's lectures there were only 9 students (out of 300) present for a lecture. He said they're not sure what they're doing with this. He said possibilities are: doing away with streaming until a few weeks before an exam (the class almost attacked him when he said that), doing away with streaming during class time, or taking attendence somehow in lecture and those who don't show can't stream. These are only tentative suggestions, he said no official decision has been made.

Retests: There will be no more retests for anyone as of next year. He said most threads will have multiple exams and the grades will be averaged to determine whether or not you pass or fail. You fail 1 thread you're in summer school (same as this year).

The entire class is extremly unhappy about both of these new policies and many of us sent emails stating this and saying what we think should be put forth to remedy the problems. He was not open to any of our comments during the meeting so it appears that they will do what they want, regardless of how we feel.

Ohhh...No!!! 🙁

I don't really understand what's the big deal about streaming. It is nice and all, but we can live without it.
In fact, 98 % of us finished undergrad without even recording voice. No problem at all.

I just hope they will make lectures available. I am not a biochemistry person so I thought that streaming will somehow help me to understand topic if I miss something the first time....I can go and see a lecture again in my own pace...thats why all the streaming issue kind of bothers me...

I hope they make it available too. But I kind of want my classmates to be in class sometimes. Usually when I got confused about a topic, I just used wikipedia or online search engines. It works like a charm. 😀

The problem is that some of the professors will test you from a minute fact that they say in passing between subjects that is not written on the notes or in the reading. Its impossible to write down everything they say and pay attention 100% of the time, especially on a day when you have 8 hours of lecture! Once you see the amount of information that you really get and the level of detail that you're supposed to know it at you'll understand why streaming is one of the greatest tools NYCOM has to offer, so the threat of limiting it really stresses us out! Live with out it?? Sure we can, but why make us struggle any more than we already are! Also, its not like theres nobody in class...on an average day its probably about 150 of us (subtract about 40 for DPC and the kids the drop/fail out and its more than half). The day after a test its usually significantly less because many people tend to take a day to recouperate, and that is when there were only 9 kids in that one lecture for 2009.

I still did not get my DPC package 🙁 🙁 🙁

hmm yeah Im a bit mixed about the streaming... at one end it sucks that no one comes to class but I would love to have it available for reviews.

I understand that theyre trying to bring up their pass rate thats fallen recently and the residency matches have also dropped a bit since the 2003 class. I do think that taking attendance in some form... clickers maybe or some other form.. should work with the streaming.

Also if everyone feels that streaming is an important issue then we can all sign a petition and submit it to the office of admissions in July asking that the streaming videos remain since it was one of the major factors of choosing nycom.

I havent gotten the DPC package either taty so its all good 🙂 Btw we should all meet up since a lot of us are around new york 👍

I see what you are saying. Streaming is one of the things that I like about NYCOM. I really hope they keep it. By reading on SDN, it makes me think only 9 came to class and freak me out.. lol... I guess I am wrong.
What they can do is make a 60-70% mandatory attendence instead of taking the streaming lectures away. If they decide to take it away anyway, it is still okay for me. 😉

hey applicationsyea, are you coming to NYCOM this fall?

Yeah sounds like I'm in for nycom for 2011 😀 They have one of the best non-primary residency matches so why look somewhere else!

Ok, as a streamer since week 3, I wanna jump in here and say a few things.

Streaming is a big deal. First 3 weeks of class, going there everyday at 8am, getting out at 5pm, then studying until midnight, only to getup and be there at 8am again left little time for working out, any relaxing or an reading besides the powerpoints.

Once I realized I could stream 8 hours of lectures in 4-5 hours (I stream lectures at between 2.0-2.5) and then spend the rest of day reading review books, robbins, etc. and still have plenty of time to workout or sleep in when I was tired. Plus the fact that I can pause a lecturer at any time to look something up or rewind if I didn't hear something clearly he/she said, made me realize I would never go to class again. It's not about laziness, it's about EFFICIENCY. Streaming is WAY more efficient than going to class. Nobody can argue against that. I never stream anything under double speed, so I'm spending 1/2 the time listening to lecture. You guys don't realize this yet, but time is a very valuable thing in med school. When it gets close to the test you have to literally divide up time on which topics to focus on whether you feel comfortable on the other topics or not! You'll see when you get here, but time is invaluable. Taking away streaming and making me go to class is not gonna work. I'm either gonna swipe in and then sit there in class with head phones on for 8 hours doing my own studying. Or I just won't go at all and rely solely on the powerpoints and reading books. Attending lecture is a thing of the past. It's not only like this at NYCOM, it seems it is like this at most school that don't have mandatory attendance that most people don't go to class. There is a reason for it, there's not enough time. Even now, I should be going to bed, been up studying till 1am yet again.

Imagine having to worry about boards and having to run to class everyday at 8am as a 2nd year. Sound like fun? As put forth by beastmaster earlier, the main thing is apply pressure for voluntary attendance.

now you have me stressed about school already :scared:

But I see your point and I agree. Schools like ducom and others have worked well with streaming without lowering their pass rate so nycom should focus on something else to bring it up.

now you have me stressed about school already :scared:

Don't get stressed out yet. Yes, medical school is arguably the most difficult academic task there is and is not to be taken lightly, but on the same hand if we didn't love it we would not be there.

They won't remove streaming completely. Being as its such a good tool for learning and the fact that they have so much invested in it.

I do however see them shutting down streaming during the hours of the day when classes are held.
I wouldn't be surprised if that is how they decide to deal with the current situation.

yep 😀 👍

OK people there was a good idea to meet 🙂 What are you guys thinking about it? I am working 50+ hours, but I will be available on weekend 🙂

Does it worry anyone that there seem to be so many changes going on at NYCOM with curriculum etc? Hunter Gatherer in 2010 mentioned that anatomy was going to be prosections and demonstrations. I am excited about attending NYCOM but wonder what else is going to change.

I think he was referring to changes for our class (2010). I think you guys will still get to dissect next year.

we are basically done dissecting. We did not do any dissections in the thoracic or abdominal cavity. Our class was unsure of whether we would continue to do dissections in year 2 and if we would use the cadavers from the class of 2011 for adominal/thoracic cavity. Because we are the 2nd class in the systems based switch we had 2nd year students using the organs from the cadavers we've been dissecting. They are modifying anatomy for the incoming class to improve things.

I like systems based learning but I don't like the idea of doing Anatomy lab for 2 years! Anatomy practicals are a doozy!

i was just accepted to nycom today 🙂

i was all set to go to nsu but this has thrown me for a loop. i'm from boston, so being closer to home would be nice. what are all of your reason for being excited about nycom, if you don't mind?

So what happened to meeting up this weekend? I am up for it.

If you want to go for a non primary care residency then NYCOM wins in terms of their residency numbers. I think no matter how many places u ask this question you'll get the same answer. Nycom leads nsu by a bit.

Some lists show PCOM > NYCOM > CCOM > others (didnt read more) in terms of non primary residencies. Honestly, first two years of core studying has a lot to do with the student but good clinical rotations in third and fourth year are essential.

basically... go NYCOM!

I am up to next week, looks like I have to fix those databases at work this weekend again. Paid overtime work is good...but not on weekends.🙁

My reasons are the same + I got a good vibe from the school+ looks like school heavily uses technology which is buys me because I am a computer science person.

Other thing...I live in Long Island and I dont feel like moving even for MD schools...why should I move it I feel good at NYCOM...🙂

Yea, the technology is great but if they're going to be altering streaming, be careful. I think a number of us 2010's are bitter with the way that they're changing everything on us. We got used to one thing and if we started out with the changes I don't think we'd be bothered as much.

I still dont have my DPC package...ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 🙁 🙁 🙁

Hey Taty, I got the DPC package today and most of the stuff is similar to what we were given during the interview. I PMed you the application essay questions they are asking just in case you want to look over them. Im guessing you should get it soon or just call em up.

We can push the meeting to next weekend. Any area prefs? Long Island, Manhattan or Queens...? I guess everyone PM me and we'll set something up for either next saturday or sunday

Thanks a lot guys!!! NYCOM people told me that application was sent to me February 9th...Apparently it got lost in the mail as my interview invite ( I live in Glen Cove, so I dont think that it suppose to take a month for the envelope to come ...) They told me they will resend my application tomorrow.

Congrats to all the future doctors who have been accepted like myself. Does any one know if NYCOM sends us a financial aid packet or information on loans? I know it was dicussed whenI was interviewed but I was not focousing on it then. Thanks!

I didn't get one... did anyone else get one? (Accepted November)

Hey Everyone;

I just wanted to say congradulation to the new members of the class of 2011. I am an incoming member as well. I was wondering if anyone has any financial aid advice, when should I start applying and so on... During the interview and tour session I was told we would be getting a package of financial aid info, has anyone gotten theirs?

Also I just wanted to put it out there that I'm looking for a apartment/roomate in the area. If any one has any suggestions or is looking for a apartment/roomate please let me know. Us First years have to stick together! P.S you can also reach me using this SN on AIM.

CONGRADULATION NYCOM CLASS OF 201😀
