BOOKS

Don't buy everything on the MANDATORY reading list NYCOM sends out.

visit the Step 1/ Comlex 1 forums, osteopathic forum, and allopathic forums. Do a search on each subject and you will see what people say about particular books for each subject. I did this and had my core study books (Path, physio, pharm, micro, OMM, anatomy, biochem, and embryology) before school started. I was still missing some cores books but I fill them as needed. Personally I like texts that read like prose (i.e. STARS physiology, Robbins, neuroanatomy through clincal cases, etc.) and review books (RR Path, BRS physio, First aid, etc.).

Amazon is also ok for reviews.

First week of school you can look at books in the library and see if it fits your needs. You can also browse in the bookstore. the library sets aside mandatory textbooks for 3 hours max loan(enough time to read/take notes on 2-3 chapters), some books for 1 week loan, and the previous editions can be borrowed up to 3 weeks I believe.

get your library password so you may renew books and put books on hold. as far as I know you can only get this from the medical library.

don't be afraid to buy more books than you need. If you take care of them you can easily resell them back for 80%+ of the original cost.

I'm still trying to decide on a pharm and biochem book. I have 3 pharm books, 2 biochem books, and I have 1 biochem book checked out that I am looking over.

ask upperclassmen but don't guy buying their bookcase.

Emule is great for the filesharing crowd. lots of hard to find files are located in the network.

Does anyone know what's the 1st and 2nd year schedule like for NYCOM (For lecture based track)?
Do you have to register your own classes like in undergrad?

I am asking this because I am deciding between pbl and lecture.
I like the idea of deeper learning gained by going through the discussion sections in PBL.
However, I'd like to attend lectures because that's how I learned in undergrad.

The fullest it would be for lecture based is Monday, Wednessday, Friday 8-12 and Tuesday, Thursday 8-5.

OMM lab is on a monday or wednessday (2 hours) so that day you'll be in school from 8-10 or 10-12 depending what group you're in. Anatomy lab is monday or wednessday (3 hours), which ever day you don't have OMM so that day you'll be in school from 9-12. Some weeks you don't have anatomy so then you get a day off. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday is just regular class. Everyday we have lunch from 12-1.

Class from 8-12 or 8-5 is on a fully booked day. Most of the time its really like 9-12 or 8-3 on a long day. It depends on how many lectures they have scheduled. You do not pick your classes or make a schedule, everyone has it the same, except for when you have lab.

That's how it is for us first years this year, i'd imagine it will be identical or very similar next year for you guys!

Hey guys, Im trying to decide between Lecom and NYCOM with an interview comin up at Touro, MI. I like the fact that NYCOM has one of the higher rates of specialization. What are some other positives and negatives of NYCOM. I am trying to justify spending the 43k a year plus living expenses. It is worth this money? Also did anybody hear about the 1st time board pass rates?...I heard they were average

I have decided to go to NYCOM.....anybody looking for roomates?

For what its worth, I like Goodman and Gillmans for Pharm; it's very physio friendly and thus gives you a thorough understanding of mechanisms. It's a huge and expensive book, but it's available online through the library (STATREF). For biochem, I highly recommend Lehninger's, although if you've had biochem before you may be comfortable with the review book (Lippincotts).

Other favorites: Robbins, Guyton Physio, Harrisons, Moore/Dalley, Ross Histology, Murray microbio, Rohen, Netters, Janeway Immuno. Costanzo's physio book is good for illustrations but I like the text in Guyton much better. I personally don't care much for the review books, I've found a bunch of errors in them (more like things are misleading b/c they're cursory).

Man, I could talk to you for hrs bout books..

There is a thread for people in Nycom Looking for roomates.

One book you guys need to buy next year. Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases by Hal Blumenfeld.

If you read that book instead of whatever required books they say (Barr's, etc.) you will learn the neuroanatomy perfectly and will actually understand neuroscience. I guarantee if you read that book you'll ace your first 2 neuro exams (the third one is mostly psychiatry and pediatrics and not as much neuroscience). I didn't get the book till 1 week before the 2nd exam and it helped but I wish I had it the whole time. Write it down somewhere and remember to get it.

Personally, I usually buy most of the required texts but obviously some are much better than Robbins. You can access Harrison's online but I don't like reading text off a computer screen so I'd recommend buying Harrison's. I like Robbins but the truth is, Harrison's usually does a better job of explaining pathology than Robbins does.

I mailed my deposit today 🙂

Deciding between NYCOM and NSUCOM was difficult, but I went with NYCOM in the end.

Being from Boston it will be difficult to be surrounded by all of the Yankees fans, but I will learn to deal...and wear my bosox hat!

congrats to all who decided to join in and thank you a lot for everyone for giving us tips including huntergatherer!

ps. did he just say 'boss' 😀

I'm flattered; however, I'm a loner, a rebel...you wouldn't wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm an enigma, wrapped in a riddle. At NYCOM during the day, I am just your average student; yet on the way home I pass thru a telephone booth and proceed as Plasticman on SDN at night. Revealing Plasticman's secret identidy would not only be very un-superheroish, it would also destroy my anonymitity on these boards, no longer allowing to post my true feelings about NYCOM and osteopathic medical studies in general, which currently are positive, but who knows what super villain or evil professor the future holds in the next adventure of Plasticman.

Seriously, only less than a handful of kids at school actually know who I am, and I wonder if even the seemingly all knowledgeable Huntergatherer knows. 😕

Anywayz... I posted somewhere else about books, but for review books I am using right now (these also help me review for exams):

1st Aid
Step-up to the USMLE
Robbins Path Review

I already claimed being an entity don't try to be more obscure than me.

And you owe me $5 from orientation!

does anyone know when the tuition payments are due? thanks.

Does anybody knows how long it will take them to review applicant for DPC?

I'm going to guess sometime in August after the loans come in. I can't imagine them making you pay tuition before you're not even 100% sure you'll go, that's what the deposit is for.

I'm hoping we dont have to apy tuition for a while, I owe my insurance $900 because even though I didn't get it until this month, I still have to pay for January, February, and March. I don't get it, but that's insurance companies for you. And I still need to finish paying off the costs of my interview travels, I don't have time ot be paying for tuition, unless the governemnt wants to stop taking out close to half my paycheck in taxes and the union I belong to wants to stop taking it's monthly union dues.

If you applied for financial aid and are getting stafford loans the tuition will be automatically applied when it is dispursed. this year it was disbursed around 2nd-3rd week of school. you will get numerous bills but as long as you are confirmed for stafford you can ignore it.

the rest of the info is here:

Does anybody else apply to DPC??

anyway, does anyone know when they will send Finantial aid packet?

I recently got a call from NYCOM and they said by the end of the month

Hi everyone...I was accepted into NYCOM yesterday!!! I am extremely excited!! 😀 I am from Buffalo and need some advice. As a student how do you know how much money is enough to live on all year? where do you even start? And is working completely out of the question, even if it were 4-8hrs on a weekend? Thanks for any advice!!

Welcome to the Nycom Family!!! In terms of money you could make an estimation based on rent, utlities, food, ect... to get a ball park figure but you won't know exactly until you start school. If you see you need more money, then you may have to take out private loans. I don't think you would have time to work, but it would be hard to say because it depends on how long you need to study. You may only know that once school actually starts. I'll be happy if I could find time to sleep once school starts.😴 😴 😴
