Thank You! I figured there would'nt be time to work I just wondered if there any strict rules against it. Any other suggestions regarding FASFA or any types of scholarships to apply for before the school year begins, that would be great!! The sooner I have this situation under control the better, thanks for your help, much appreciated!! 😛

yeah i agree dont think too much about working right now until u get a feel for med school. It will not be easy.... but you already knew that right 😀

Im going to NYCOM. anyone know when we start?

I read somewhere on sdn that someone called nycom to ask but they didn't have an exact date, just that it will be around august 19 or so.

Anybody got fin aid papers?

Anybody got fin aid papers?

not yet. I have been waiting for that forever.
I figured other schools might not have given out financial aid yet.
So, I am just waiting.

Does anyone know if an already established credit history is necessary/beneficial for taking out private loans for med school? I'm asking because I have relied primarily on debit/atm cards and have refrained from using credit in the past. I'm starting nycom in the fall and I'm wondering if I need to establish a good credit report before I can be granted access to loans.
-Thanks

Hey! I was wondering if current first and second years checking this post that are in DPC (PBL) can tell me a little bit about it? ie Do you like it or not? Is it worth applying? PM if you feel more comfortable. Thanks.

You can get your full stafford loans from nycom without establishing credit. You may need to establish credit to get grad plus.

Congratulations to all accepted in the Class of 2011. I'm sure I've met some of you, as I'm a current second year and gave some of the tours around campus.

I have house that has 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms approx. 10 mins from campus. It's in Westbury and is really nice. It's ideal for your first year of medical school. If you're looking for a nice place to live, and want to live in a comfortable environment with a group of your classmates, PM me and I'll send you the details on the house.

It's a 12 month lease (beginning on June 1, 2007) and the rent is $800/month. The rent might be slightly higher or slighly lower depending on the room size you desire.

I have pictures of the house and am working with the landlord to fill the house. I'm not sure if I'll be taking a room in the house or not (depending on rotations) but I'll be happy to tell you about the house, or answer any questions you have on first year at NYCOM.

Congratulations again and Good luck!

hey guys! I applied to NYCOM but I haven't heard back yet w/ a yes or no! I currently have a deposit in at UNECOM but I'm from North Jersey so NYCOM location wise is really attractive. Does anyone know how late interviews are being held? or how full the class of 2011 is yet?

when was your interview?

Sue you should call up and check just to make sure if your interview was about a month ago since there have been mistakes with the address.

Guys I just got my financial aid package, the address was horribly wrong and ended up on the wrong side of my apt building... I hate to say this but right click, copy and paste cant be that tough right?

May I ask what you were offered? How much above stafford loans?

I also got the package yesterday. It doesn't tell you what you were offered yet. THere are a couple of applications and a bunch of forms to fill out and return.

I got it too no loan info yet. I guess I'll check maximum available or something, since I fill out my FAFSA and my expected family contribution was very high...where I'll find this money ehh

yep, not direct info about stafford loans... i think.. i havent looked at it in detail yet

*updated* max stafford is $42,722 but without any info of how much the school will cost, its kinda silly to apply for grad plus loans. Does anyone remember what the cost was per year because I was more worried about what to do with the two disgusting chocolate chip cookies I had picked up from the lunch table during the financial aid presentation.

The deadlines for most of the loans are 5/01 or one month after acceptance but strictly 5/01 for private loans. Disbursement is strictly twice a year... with no chance of emergency disbursement.

so I have a question for the seniors, why in the world does the financial aid dept sound like its on a war path?! Ive always applied for private loans whenever ive needed them and disbursement is usually within a month. Are they just trying to get us to fill out all the forms on time or are they really that strict to get our signatures on all forms (including that odd 'allowable charges form') with the only info about costs coming from a short presentation before our interview where the only thing I remember is ask for as much money as you can because you're going to need it. (darn cookies!)

I am confused...I am so confused...Does anybody know which loans cover books and living expenses? Private? Confused...Confused...

I did not recieve the packet yet.😡 I am also totally confused with the financial aid process.😕 Can someone tell me what's in the packet? Thanks.

I am confused...I am so confused...Does anybody know which loans cover books and living expenses? Private? Confused...Confused...

Gradplus loans are for your living expenses. I think the max is somewhere around $24,000 per year. Graduate school loans have nothing to do with your parents income...you don't even have to fill out that info on FAFSA. For undergrad my family contribution as they tabulated it was rediculously high, but I got the max amount for NYCOM. These loans go by YOUR income, not your parents, even if you are a dependent. Check the max amout for what you want to borrow for stafford...tuition last year was around $37,000. Since you can borrow $42,722, you will get a rebate of $42,722 minus tuition and what ever the school takes out of it for fees or what not. The rebate and your gradplus money will be disbursed to you in two equal payments...one in September, the other in the end of January. You're most likely going to spend more money in the fall than in the spring since you have to buy books (I spent close to $2,000) and medical equipment (I spent about $1000). There is also a 3-day medical convention in October in San Diego that the school pays for your hotel, you need to pay for transportation and food if you want to go. You should calculate yourself in some money for that too.

When you get your rebate checks for the $42,722 minus school costs and your gradplus loans you can do what ever you want with the money. Some people have booked cruises, bought cars, and others spend it wisly! 😀 You should get all the money you need from stafford and gradplus, so I wouldn't worry about private loans at all unless the gradplus max and rebate check from stafford is not enough for you to live on for a year.

Another tip: setup a HSBC direct or ING direct online savings account before school starts. Once you get your loan check for 6 months living expenses, you can put the whole thing in there and start earning interest. I use HSBC direct, and am very satisfied; I get 5.05% and can withdraw the money as many times, and whenever I want. Normally, you link it to a normal bank account (eg. Bank of America checking account) and sends funds either way between the two accounts, which takes about 3 business days per transaction. They also give you an ATM card, but if you get money that way, HSBC will charge you a small fee, even if you withdraw at an HSBC bank. I have my money in HSBC and just withdraw my monthly living expenses 1x/month.

is there a fee to transfer money to your B of A checking bank account?

Thank you, I did not show my parents income. I showed mine...I got kind of high paid job last year which boosted my income, but mad my family contribution very high...ehh

Does anyone have a copy of the booklist that NYCOM requires?👍 I would like to purchase some of the more worthwhile textbooks from the list now while I am working instead of using my loan money to do so.Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and see you all in August!

This has been said many times, but don't go off the booklist. Wait to talk to your big brother/big sister and/or other upper classmen. For instance for OMM, most people recommend OMT review by Savarese as oppossed to the one on the booklist. Everyone told me I would need the Bates Physical Exam book, but I have only opened it a couple times, and it wasn't even really neccessary. 🙄 Read thru the previous posts in this thread for book recommendations (including mine).

Thank you for the information! I have read through a lot of previous posts and have looked into a couple of books. I guess I will wait for the Big Brother to inform me. I just hate to have to spend 2000 dollars at one time when the semester starts. Once again thanks for your advice.😎

So far there is only one book that i can say that "without it I may have failed an exam":

Rohen and Yokochi
Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body
http://www.amazon.com/Color-Atlas-A...6241750?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174952007&sr=8-1

I wish I had Grant's dissector but I am too broke/cheap so i just read it in the library.

For peace of mind:
First Aid
http://www.amazon.com/First-Aid-USM...6241750?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174952287&sr=1-1

A new edition comes out each year. Personally I think you should just get one at the start of the year and start annotating it as each exam appraoches and after each exam. Don't worry about the 2008 edition when it comes out in december. It will have the same content with just as many mistakes.

start reading in the Step 1/comlex 1 forum to see what books are used for boards study. there is usually one highly recommended book for each subject or system and you can search those. Don't rely on the NYCOM book list.

Emule is nice to have backup copies of your library on your laptop:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/emule/

for some perspective I have about 30 books on my bookshelf. ONLY 3 of them are on the NYCOM book list.

Thank you for the info. So pretty much I am to take the NYCOM list with a dumptruck of salt. Thanks for the links. I went and checked out the books..The color atlas seems like a good book and I will definitely obtain grant's dissector when the time comes.😎

i am sure there are many students that rely on the NYCOM book list.

there are many schools of thought:

1)rely on NYCOM notes

2)text Book reading club

3)review book (usually relies on class notes/lectures to supplement)

4) combo of the above

NYCOM and perhaps a lot of med schools want you to be #2. This works for some people but when it comes to dense material I can read about 15 pages/hr. With class lectures + reading i would not have time to review so i use a combo of the above.

You can resell most books at a good price but I am not a fan of relying on a book list since I know my learning style.

I encourage everyone to take an active role in learning starting with what books they will choose.

Just decided that I will be attending NYCOM in August! Just wanted to say hi to my future classmates. Also will def be looking for roomates too!!

Wise advice as usual from HG. I keep switching my study styles each thread trying to find what works better in attempt to honor 🙁 I used to hand write my own notes for every single lecture adding information / definitions from books. That took too long, so I switched to typing notes for every lecture. I'm realizing that was taking too long, so now I am focusing on just reading the notes over a couple times and reading books. I also use 1st Aid and Step-up to the USMLE, especially towards the end of each thread to review with. Starting 1-2 weeks out from an exam, my friends and I start reviewing/quizzing together about 12-15 hours / day (with breaks for meals of course). The robbins path review is not only excellent for quizzing yourself as you read chapters in robbins, it is also great for quizzing study buddies during review time.

For those of you who workout, get ready to find a gym out here. The NYCOM gym is tiny and has terrible hours (for example, 4pm-10pm some days). The NYIT gym isn't any better and doesn't open till 10am daily. This is one of the major complaints I have with NYCOM - no decent university gym facilities for medical students to workout. It's not that big of a deal, so don't freak out; just letting you know to expect to find a gym somewhere else.

PlasticMan and HunterGatherer rule🙂 I am already proud that I am going to study in the same medical school with them!!! hehe I am thinking this for real🙂 thank you guys for your help!!!

Anytime, Taty. 😎

There are a couple places that I know students workout at. There is a YMCA somewhere around school. Island fitness is an enormous gym in Glen Cove; it's lie $45/month for NYCOM students. Planet fitness in Glen Cove is $10/month for NYCOM students, but is VERY small.

If anyone is looking around for places to train MMA, PM me. I spent some time scouting out places around here and can tell you about the place I'm currently training at as well as the cost / quality of instruction at a couple other ones in the area.

For me, I don't care os much about gyms. As long as I have my ice rinks, I'm happy. And yes, I know NYCOM has several in the area, I went to undergrad nearby, so I know where they are, what time the session are, etc. Just so you can all recognize me, I"ll probably be the one stumbling into class at the last second wearing leggings, a fitted top, and have my ice skates out by me so they can dry off. Feel free to say hello, ask about my skating, and offer me an ice pack.

Of course, it is possible that I would occcasionally be able to keep track of time and get off the ice early enough to change, in which case I'll be the one carrying skates and rubbing my back, and probably have a thick sweater around my waist so it'll be more comfortable to sit.

Just decided that I will be attending NYCOM in August! Just wanted to say hi to my future classmates. Also will def be looking for roomates too!!

Welcome to the NYCOM family!!!

I just recieved my financial aid package today. It looks rather confusing but, I think I'll be able to make some sence of it. 😕

One point to make: It doesn't matter what FAFSA says you can pay, you can always take out the maximum loan (about 42 grand) regardless of how much you're supposed to be able to pay. So don't worry if the numbers don't seem to add up. The only thing it affects you for is if you are applying for a disadvantaged scholarship. I think if you're like a family of 3 you need to make $19,000 or less to even qualify for that.

Also, everyone has their own study styles. I varied mine up over the course of the year but it's really just a matter of what works for you at the time. Currently I like to outline what I deem to be the important material. For the lectures that are either easier or seem less important I just study the notes. You'll kind of get the hang of it as you go along and see a few exams.

12-15 hours a day for 2 weeks...wow. I can't say I've ever done that yet but I'm not from the big studiers. NYCOM is hard but I think that if you get yourself into a routine and enjoy what you're learning it is very very manageable. Personally, I struggle more with anatomy than anything else. I think it has to do with learning styles. Anatomy kills me because you're under a ton of pressure for the anatomy exams with the time limits and you need to have everything totally memorized. There really are no shortcuts. The written exam is all multiple choice so if you're a good testtaker that will definitely help you. The one thing I suggest is don't fall behind on anatomy. I always do and I always find myself spending 5 out of 7 days the week before a test studying anatomy and only 2 out of 7 days studying for the written exam (with maybe an hour or 2 for OMM which is really all you need). The sad thing is I'm yet to do really well on an anatomy practical despite how much time I feel like I'm spending studying for it.

In terms of textbooks...I like having the NYCOM book list for peace of mind but in all honesty 70% of the NYCOM books I've barely ever looked at.

My personal favorite books that I can't do without:

Harrison's Internal Medicine (you can get it online but my eyes get strained staring at a computer all day)

Robbins Pathology

Rohen and Yokochi Color Atlas of Anatomy

Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases (by hal blumenfeld) *Seriously, buy this book and read it from cover to cover, you'll ace the first 2 neuro exams*

First Aid for the USMLE

Lippincott Pharmacology

Aside from that the other textbooks kind of just sit there. It is comforting knowing I have them in some sort of weird way. They just don't do much.

HG and Plasticman do a great job of covering most questions. If you guys have questions about the area I can answer most of those. I've spent the good bulk of my life on Long Island so I know the area well. It's a great place to live albeit a little expensive. Unfortunately there's not much to do at night around here but the LIRR makes going to Manhattan a breeze.

Anyway, good luck next year. Enjoy your summer. That's the best advice you can probably get. If you really can't wait to be a doctor you're going to love what you learn and the year's going to breeze by. It seems like only a few weeks ago we were sitting in orientation and now we're about 2 months from finishing our first year. It's gone faster than any year of college and I think part of that is because you're constantly working and you never really get a break. It's great though and you should all be excited. Congratulations and good luck.

Hi everyone- I am goin to nycom in the fall too- cant wait to meet all of you. Is anyone looking for a roomate? 🙂

I know you posted this awhile ago, but seems roomate chatter has dropped off on here. Anyways, I will def be looking for a roomate/roomates for the fall. (By the way I'm a female but have no roomate preference) Would like an august 1st lease since I'll be working all summer right up until orientation. I have read about all the suggested places to live on here and definitely want to live close to campus. Sooo if anyone else is still looking PM me or post here. Can't wait to meet everyone!

P.S. I feel as though this sounds like a personal ad which is a liiiittle awkward, sorry!

P.P.S. Gointonycom I see you are from Buffalo, I'm from syracuse and I'm sure there are plenty more upstaters out there!

Sounds like it's time for someone to upgrade to an LCD... 😀

O yea...I got my first pair of eyeglasses the summer before school started and it was a very very mild prescription. 20:25 in my left eye, 20:30 in my right.

I definitely need a new prescription as I can barely see clearly at more than 20 feet away anymore. Damn reading and computer screen.

I could use an LCD but I don't know, there's something I like about being able to just sit and hold a book. On the other hand, I can't imagine what medical school was like before computers.

Good luck taty!

Did anyone figure out what the max is for gradplus loans? I havent had the chance to call up the office to check and was wondering if anyone knew...

Does anyone know what the question number 6 means in "student loan entrance interview" form? I don't have any loan in my undergrad. What do you guys fill out in the blacks below?

It says:

"The current holder of my loan is ________
My guaranty agency* is __________
I will be notified in writing if my loan is transferred to a new holder. I must direct all future correspondence to the new holder"

Also in the "Preliminary application for finantial aid", if I check on the box that says "request maximum allowed", would I be able to take less than max amount if I don't want full amount later?

It's weird to apply and fill out a form when you don't know how much you will be getting?
