Thanks you too!!

I'm def. leaning towards NYCOM, but I have 2 other acceptances and I'm strongly considering CCOM as well. I will def. join the group if I decide on NYCOM..

Argh, decisions, decisions...

Its all about the timing...If we have class past 3pm I study on campus and leave after 7:30 or 8pm traffic by then the ride isn't so bad, and I am more productive at school anyway. The only times that suck are when we have class at 8am because traffic is the worst...most weeks this only happens once maybe twice.
Its all a personal choice ---there are some people that commute from Staten Island...but my advice is if you really love the city and would be miserable living in the burbs than its worth it.

Wow...you really drive there 5 days a week and stay in class from 9-5? That sounds ridiculously tiring, especially with the traffic.

i interviewed dec 13th and got my letter today. keep your eyes glued on the mailbox, kiddies, and good luck 👍

p.s. merry christmas! 🙂

I received an email requesting for a "2nd interview". What does this mean? I interviewed on 11/29 and I thought everything went really well. I couldn't really "read" my interviewer but I figured all my answers were appropriate (and I delivered them well too!)

When I called, they said that they request multiple people to go back for a second interview....and that was all the info they would give me... arg..

anyone with this experience? they want me to go back in January...

Hmm, this is the first I've heard of 2nd interviews. Last year the only 4 outcomes (that I saw on SDN) were: 1) Accepted 2) Rejected 3) Waitlisted 4) Medprep - Conditional acceptance

Hey I interviewed on the 13th as well...in the morning session.

the only Indian guy there. Congrats hopefully I hear soon. I know they were still waiting on my LOR's cause my pre med advisor is a *****. haa

no letters for me...🙁 admissions is on vacation.

i interviewed on the 13th of december too....no letter. 🙁
does that mean either waitlist or rejection?

Hard to predict the flow of mail leaving NYCOM. Sometimes I receive mail after people in NJ do and I live in Queens. Sometimes I get mail that is post dated over 7 days ago.

:luck:

hey whats up man, i was the serbian guy who did retail at bloomingdale's 🙄
good luck to you... i think there's not rhyme or reason as to when mail comes and goes.

I'm starting to get really nervous about this letter situation. 🙁

Unfortunatly you will have to just wait it out. Waiting to hear from a school is definetly the most stressful part of the application process. Be patient and just hang in there. After the holidays the adcoms should get back on track my friend, now current classmate, waited close to 2 1/2 weeks to hear from the school when he interviewed in late December. I hope you get accepted. Good Luck!!!!:luck::luck::luck:

Like what Hunter and Gatherer said it doesn't mean a thing. you may get it tomorrow or even a week latter. I had a friend last year, now current class mate that didn't find out for 2 1/2 weeks after the interview. I hope you are both accepted. Good Luck!!!!:luck::luck::luck:

how many seats NYCOM has?

I applied late so wanna know.

We had something like 298, then down to 295....then now to who knows what 😉

When I interviewed few weeks ago they said that they had 400 seats, and interviewed 700 people.

Wow, that's the first I've heard of NYCOM increasing their class size to 400....Are you sure they said that the class of 2012 would be 400 seats. Or did they say they offered acceptances to 400 people and interviewed 700?

When they were interviewing us they claimed to interview 600 people for 300 seats...

I mailed in my deposit for NYCOM yesterday 😀 I am so excited to be back in downstate NY. I have a random question for current students... is it going to be really hard for me to find housing in the area for my 100lb dog and I? He is trained (crated when I am not there) and not high energy at all, plus he is the best watchdog ever!! I just want to know what kind of struggle I am in for. Thanks for any info 🙂

well, i can't think of any specific complexes or whatnot offhand, but i would start browsing craigslist and the long island area papers online to see what is out there. also, you will be given access to the web board which will have a ton of housing info/apartment listings. between all of that, you should be able to find something. there are definitely people in our class who have dogs. good luck!

Now that you mentioned it, they may have said either one. I'm leaning towards acceptances now. Woops.

Interviewed on 11/6, still haven't heard anything... gunna call later this week... i don't know?

wow... 400 in a class, thats a record!

That's ridiculous, i withdrew from NYCOM for the very reason..how do you NYCOMer's manage to get the lab time or do anything else at your campus. The building doesn't seem like its big enough to have a study area to include both first year and 2nd year's. I know there's a PA program as well..med schools shouldn't have class sizes beyond 200 at the max. NYCOM was an excellent school a few years ago..but it seems like they are spiraling down with this sort of class size increases. I like to know what students there think? I am curious..my class size is 160 and sometimes i can tell the labs get crowded..now i can't even imagine 200 kids but 400 is just plain out ridiculous.

300 isn't too bad. 40 of them are DPC, so they spend most of their time in the DPC suites, that brings it down to 260 sharing the other spaces. I rarely have trouble finding a place to study, and I go into the lab late at night so it's not bad at all. They ARE NOT taking a class of 400 this year. If for no other reason, I do'nt think there are that many seats in the lecture hall. I would call the school and ask for clarification, but I really think that this was a mistake.

it's either 230 or 270 seats this year (i forget which one) but it's not 400. i'm pretty sure that number is more like the estimate number of spots offered since med schools offer about 2x as many seats as they can fill (not everyone will attend).

NYCOM library is pathetic. your best bet is studying far away from campus.

Are you guys concerned about your core rotations? I know TOURO-NY is going to share some of the same hospitals adding to the crowding at the hospitals. There a lot of medical school in downstate NY..it amazes me how students manage to do their rotations or even electives. I am interested in doing some of my electives in the city but def skeptical to apply due to such a high med student population.

I think it is great. You have the opportunity to work together with students from other schools who will be your colleagues. I think it increases comradory and cultural diversity in the medical profession. In NYC you will be sharing rotations with allopathic schools and Foreign medical schools. NYCOM shares Mimo and Brookdale with Downstate, SGU and Ross, LIJ with Einstien, Winthrop with Stoney Brook, Etc..

don't you think those things can be accomplished during residency. My question was if you wanted to find quality time at a program during electives lets say..you think it would be a easy process to against all those kids? I would think people would be forced to move out of the city and do their electives some where else, just something to ponder.

According to our dean, Touro-NY is not allowed to touch NYCOM's core rotation sites for at least the period of time that it takes for Touro-NY to get fully accreditted. That was one of the conditions that was set when Touro-NY was up for pre-accreditation with COCA.

This is a problem for every medical student in the US during electives even if you are at your home program. I'm not sure why it would be more difficult because you are a NYCOM student.

Well sure but don't you think geographically out of all the DO schools out there NYCOM seems to be part of the most crowded med student population and on top NYCOM class size doesn't seem to get any smaller. I don't know i have heard people struggle during 4th year electives to land a good audition rotation due to so many students.

NYCOM's class size has not changed recently and I have not heard of plans for increases. blahwhatever seems to be unclear on his class size comment.

If you take a look at our match list you will find that alumni are matching into hospitals not included as NYCOM affiliates. 4th year rotations are 1st come first served as far as I know. If you want to do an audition rotation in BFE or NYC you need to apply for it early if it fills on a regular basis. How quickly a program fills up their 4th year clerkships spots depends on the quality of the program, type (ortho vs IM), other factors, and not solely on population density. Most electives are usually open to all DO and allopathic (not sure on carrib) so I do not see how NYCOM would be exclusive in having problems obtaining elective spots compared to other DO schools, allopathic schools or schools in this region.

I have never heard a student in NYC complain that they can't get a 4th year elective in NYC because it is crowded. Altough it is possible there are countless teaching hospitals here. You want to do an elective in the #1 ortho program in NYC see the above paragraph. Is there going to be an advantage to living in a city with 1 medical school and a handful of teaching hospitals? how many residencies can you select from to find the perfect match for you without leaving your area?

Take a look in some of the residency forums and see how DO students are getting interviews at a number locations that exceeds their electives. Audition rotations are key at some places but obviously not all. You will have to research that as well if you are really set on going somewhere.

I appreciate your response Hunter..i am certainly interested in doing my electives in NYC, i can see what you are trying to say though.

just called. they are finally back to work. no decisions yet. no news is good news? 😕

Any out-of-state applicants receive interview invites yet?

Yes. I'm an oos applicant interviewing next week. I think I received my invite in october.

Hmm.. I called up to find my status post interview and they told me that I will receive it in the mail and that no other info can be given at this point. Is this bad news?

do they automatically grant interview?

When called, they were not even willing to acknowledge the receipt of AACOMAS primary asking me to look for snailmail to arrive.

i think they are just telling you that you will receive a letter IF they make a decision.
