Interview on Tuesday! Hope there's not a huge snow storm or sub-zero temperature that day 🙁

So, what I've gathered from this thread is that the interviews are very low stress. How long did they generally last for people?

Hey guys! I was just wondering if someone could share their experiences with the interview, specifically what types of questions they were asked?? from what i gathered on this forum, it seems like for the most part its very laid back and they ask general questions, please correct me if i am wrong! also, i wanted to make sure the interview is open file rt??? good luck to everyone with the rest of this cycle!

There's supposed to be a snowstorm Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, so you should be safe!

Interview day itself lasts up to several hours, it depends. I was one of the last to be interviewed so I was there for a pretty long time, but the actual interview was probably 20-30 minutes? It's really just a conversation, imho (well, depending on who interviews you.) Don't sweat it.

the questions were pretty typical -- asked about my job, college, strengths/weaknesses, my essay... the only thing they don't have are your individual grades (not sure about the gpa). they also have your secondary, i was asked about my response to the 'why nycom' question. it was only 15-20 min each and laid back.

its first come first served, so get there early if you want to be the first in so you can be the first to leave.

my interview is weds morning..i hope the weather people are very wrong!!!

Ive been waitlisted for quite some time now. Was wondering if anybody else was waitlisted and if they had heard of any movement from the waitlist? Any ideas as to when/if they do start taking people from the waitlist? Does anyone have any advice what to do next other then wait lol??

NYCOM's waitlist doesn't move until really late. They probably will fill the class first, etc. I always hear that people don't get a response from the school until way into summer. Maybe this year will be different, but you're expecting something WAY too early.

It's way too early for waitlist movement at any school, imho.

Yesterday, I received the letter packet with the immunization record and the DPC application.

Is anyone thinking about DPC? I'm flip flopping back and forth a bit, since both pathways have their advantages and the people I know in classes ahead of us did LDB. DPC intrigues me more, but the benefit of streaming and having concrete notes for LDB is undeniable.

I just interviewed so am not in a position yet where I am actually making this decision. But I was told after getting accepted (and if you get accepted) you can contact the admissions office and set up a time to sit in on a DPC session. I would definitely take advantage of this. I never thought I would like PBL but was definitely intrigued after yesterdays presentation of it. It definitely seems like more work but it also seems that it will pay off down the road and might better prepare us for the real world. Either way I believe board scores are very similar with LDB and DPC so that isnt too much of a factor.

Yeah, my interviewer told me too that board scores were not significantly different. And I've heard the same thing at other schools I interviewed at which give you an option (or the opportunity to apply for PBL). Though my friends told me they felt the DPC kids were better prepared or more versed at the beginning of 3rd year. And with such a huge class size, I wonder if being in a smaller setting would be more beneficial in terms of mentorship or LORs (or do people only do LORs from 3rd/4th year??).

I'm torn a bit because I like the principles behind PBL, but it would require a lot of work and self-discipline (in the regards doing a lot of the leg work on your own and commitment to your group), and by the sounds of it from the interview day and students I know, the DPC students have a really rough start to the semester. On the other hand, med school in general is going to take a ton of self-discipline. In regards to LDB, I find lectures boring and often I go in and out of focus, and being in class all day would be a bit of a drag, but having a set outline, notes, and the ability to stream lectures is great. You also have the benefit of those you know ahead of you who have gone through it already and their advice. In my grad program, since some of our classes where in the med school's building, we got to use the streaming system, and it was great being able to sleep in an extra hour or two, watch whichever lecture I missed that day at my own pace (skip through the gibberish, pause to write more notes or replay parts back that seemed unclear at first), and have more independence in organizing my day and studying around my set bench lab time everyday.

So I see the benefits in both, and I usually find myself taking the more difficult path often (maybe I enjoy the punishment or the challenge). I often got more out of seminars and small groups, or working through problems in lab meetings and presenting and discussing papers, than just sitting in a lecture. I felt more productive of my actual "in-school" time. Personally, I need a balance between a set structure, and creating my own schedule. So, I don't know which way I'm leaning yet lol

LORs only come from 3rd/4th year, so the class size doesn't affect you in that sense.

The class is divided up into 4 groups for labs, etc, so you get all the individual help you need as far as hands-on training goes (meaning you're not competing with 299 other people for someone's attention in OMM or Anatomy lab when you have a question.)

I personally prefer LDB - the DPC kids seem to be at school way late and they have a dress code a lot of the time. And the way DPC works, you're divided into small groups that change every block (I think). Imho, I'd get sick of spending so much time with that group of people in those tiny DPC rooms.

If that works for you, more power to you - go for it. If you don't have any discipline as far as self-studying goes, then don't apply.

Also: the people in DPC are required to attend some of our lectures (OMM, anything anatomy based. a bunch of different things.)

Just chiming in as a first year DPCer. Personally, I am rarely at school. In regards to studying, DPC lets you choose what you want to do, when you want to and where you want to. If you want to use the DPC suite or the library or you're bed to study, go for it.
Our year consists of 2 terms (semesters) and we switch each term. You don't have to study and research along with your group members, but can if you want. You're really only obligated to see them 3 times a week during group and when we meet for our clinical skills sessions. And as to our dress code, it is no different than Lecture kids, except for ICC, which lecture also attends. It's not for everyone, but if you're interested, just send me a message. I'll be happy to help!

Hey guys. I have an interview for tomorrow afternoon at Nycom. I hope this storm dosnt postpone my interview. Is anyone else here interviewing tomorrow?

I am interviewing this week as well and am a bit nervous. I had to postpone my interview once already because of a snowstorm, I'd be devastated if I had to do it again.

I have a 3.6 sGPA 3.5 cGpa and 1000s of hours of working in an Osteopathic Hospital. I have like 600 hours of volunteering but my only draw back is my MCAT isnt that highest of scores.

has anyone recently received an interview invite?? and am i correct in guessing that since they've postponed a lot of interviews that it might be a while till they send out more interview invites?

I'm from NY and submitted 9/1, completed 9/7, heard nothing since then. 🙁

S/he is from new york... Possibly the NYC/ long island area ( judging on past post...hope you think I'm not to stalkerish. I just wanted to see if you found out sooner than others because you live close by the school. )

Any who, congrats. That was a fast turn around. Happy you did well at interviews.

I hope I hear back soon.

I think if you are close to the school, you will only find out sooner in terms of mail travel, not in terms of when the school releases decisions. When the first round of decisions came out, I got my letter a day or two before most people, but that's just because I'm in the city, so mail from Nassau to here is either same day or one day depending if they mailed it in the morning or not.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I hope to hear today or tomorrow for Rochester.

Received my acceptance letter. Interviewed Jan 11th. IS.

Good Luck everyone

Yeah, sorry for being captain obvious today or lately. Just I noticed a trend in this thread that people seem to think NYCOM only loves those in NYC or LI.

Received my acceptance letter. Interviewed Jan 11th. IS.

Good Luck everyone

Congrats!! Big ups! Now you got some tough decisions to make, haha.

got my acceptance today too!!!!
ahhhh definitely my first choice..
im coming back to NYC baby!!!
good luck to everybody else!!!

Out of curiosity, have any CA residents been offered interviews here? I'm pretty set on where I'm going next year, but when I applied, NYCOM was one of my top choices and I haven't heard a peep from them.

Wow, very fast! Congrats!! They must loooove you, medlove. haha. lame joke 😳

Welcome to the party. You leaning towards LDB or DPC?

I haven't decided. I feel like DPC definitely provides a skill set that is essential for a career in medicine, but it is kind of scary to think of the amount of work you do on your own AND hard to accept that you're giving a school all this money to not teach you anything.

Congratulations!!! Are you IS or OOS??? Was it a Letter or Package??

I haven't seen it cause I haven't been home all week, but my sister texted me saying "big package from nyit!' which I assume is a big envelope. I'm from LI ... about 15 min from the school actually.

The letter was pretty standard 'Congratulations you've been accepted' stuff, plus a few extra forms to sign from what I've seen so far.

i was looking at last year's forum and i got a little scared because it seems like many people who interviewed in late march were placed on waitlist. is there a lot of waitlist movement at nycom? also, i've been complete since september and haven't heard anything from the school, I sent in an update letter a couple of weeks ago but at this point is it really going to help? i thought submitting your application early was supposed to help 🙁

p.s. congratulations to everyone whose been accepted!!! 🙂

Hey. What does the accepted letter say. I'm getting anxious as my interview approaches. Nycom my top choice.

Congrats and good luck

Thanks! The packet or letter was pretty large compared to other mail so I kind of knew it was a good sign. There was the acceptance letter which basically just said congrats and when the deposit was due by in order to hold my spot. Then there was a deposit form and also another form verifiying all the pre-requisites and where to resend official transcripts, and also they sent a pamphlet outlining the schools technical standards.

Good luck on your interview. Be yourself and show them you want it

Hey Everyone, I'm pretty sure I will be attending NYCOM in the fall! 😀 Does anyone know when classes/orientation begin at NYCOM?

Thanks for the help!

Congrats!... I am Applying this summer.. Would people mind sharing their stats and background, you can PM it if u like..

Mid-August. (Last year I started ~ August 13th)

Hey guys and girls,

How does housing work for NYCOM? Does a list of places and roommates come out in April? What are some good areas? I've been looking at some old posts about it. Anyone looking for roomies?

You have to find housing somewhere in the area yourself, NYCOM doesn't have dorms/housing (I hear that the surrounding community of richies won't let them build dorms). Most people rent apartments in Glen Cove, Greenvale, Westbury, etc. Usually around May-June people will start looking for places and roomies (gotta wait for the upperclassmen to vacate at the end of May, I would assume)

ACCEPTED!!!!! Interviewed 1/26 and received the big white envelope yesterday! I havent been home to see it yet but my mom just called me! So excited as this was my first choice school 🙂 I also can't believe how fast I heard back!

Can you tell me when the envelope was postmarked? I'm just trying to see if I might have made it in under review, or if I just missed the committees review. Congratulations as well!
