NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you in NY? Congratulations! It just seems to me that only NY residents have been told any information and I really would like to know...Its my first choice too I am happy you got in! I hope to share your happiness soon!!

Thank you! I hope you get some good news soon too! Yes I am from NY, and live like 20 minutes from the school. There were about 4-5 people at my interview date that were not from NY, so they are probably transitioning to out of staters over the next month or 2 I would assume. You can always call and check!

Best of luck- keep us posted!

Accepted! Interviewed on 1/26 and just got the letter today. OOS and I was complete in late August. I'm sure more OOS will be getting interviews soon if you are still waiting.

Accepted!!!! Interviewed 1/19, got the letter yesterday!!!! OOS and complete in December. 😍

Got an interview invite yesterday. Submitted app late Sept. I'm IS, reapplicant (waitlisted last yr with a late March interview). Sent an update letter to the school a few wks ago.

Interviewed 1/25, got the acceptance package yesterday.

Good luck folks!

I interviewed on 1-24, and got the letter today. My background:

Resident: ME
School: University of Maine at Augusta
GPA: 3.98
MCAT: 28

I have an interview with Tufts next Friday for the Maine Track program. It's my first choice since I'd like to stay close to home, but if that doesn't happen then it's NYCOM all the way!

I was impressed by the school and if I end up attending I'll apply for the Doctor Patient Continuum track. Good luck everyone! Maybe I'll be searching the thread for roommates in a few week. Cheers. 😀

AAAHH I want an interview here. Are they done handing out invites?

This is good news. It looks like they are still accepting students. I just interviewed yesterday. I really loved the school. I hope I get in. It's my top choice.

I just got an interview invite today.

Apparently they are giving out interviews for people that didn't submit a secondary....

Yes. NYCOM apparently makes interview decisions based on the initial AACOMAS application. I was surprised too. Good luck!

Yea this year they seem to have given out interview invites with the secondary... I depends on who processed your application. There are a few people who work for admissions some will give out interviews without the secondary, but then your file will be put on hold and you will not be eligible for acceptance consideration until your secondary was processed and check was cleared. Other people in the admissions office will put your file on hold until they receive the secondary, and will not offer an interview. Your best bet is still to fill out every part of the application process ASAP, September is late in medical school admissions (especially for primaries)... Good Luck guys/gals! I really hope you all could get in!

I'm not sure this is quite correct. That's quite a dichotomy to have in an admissions process. But, none-the-less, good luck everyone. 😀

Hey everyone, just wondering if there's any kind of breakdown on number of applicants to those interviewed to those accepted? I mean in terms of usually how many people that are interviewed are often accepted. I feel like I saw a chart of this information for all the DO schools from a couple years ago, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

It was along the lines of XXXX applied, XXXX interviewed, XXXX accepted, XXXX matriculated

Thanks to anyone with the answer!

The information is in the FAQ section of the admissions pages. Link below:

It doesn't have the number interviewed but all the other information is there. Cheers.

Hey guys, interview invite here on 3/1. NJ resident (only an hour away). From looking at previous posts, it seems like admissions decisions are made around the beginning of each month.

Really looking forward to interviewing here. I heard the interviews are relaxed, but if anyone has anything else to add about their interview experience, it would be greatly appreciated.

As a current NYCOM student, if you are still hoping for an interview, definitely make your name known to admissions staff. The way that office functions is a mystery to all and the methods and schemes they use to decide who get's an interview is something that few people can understand. Send update letters and emails to make them know you're interested...I would avoid calling because there are a few people who work in admissions who are genuinely unfriendly. So go the email and letter route, and at this point in the cycle, an email is probably better since time is not your friend.

Hey Im not sure how you can be a hour away from NYCOM in NJ. In case this is what your GPS etc is telling you, leave early because with traffic in the equation this is at least a 2 hour drive. Just dont want you to be unsuspecting and late...

Yeah lol it took me an hour when I drove over the weekend to check it out before I interview. I'm only a few minutes from the GWB, and after that it's smooth sailing. But I'm sure the traffic is pretty insane during weekdays. I'll be sure to leave with plenty of time during the weekday. Thanks for the input.

I am still waiting for an interview invite 🙁 I am beginning to lose hope. I did email them telling them about my interest in the school. I received a reply telling me that they interview through April, so I still may be contacted in March. I just really hope I am given an interview. I really really really really want to attend NYCOM

Seriously, I live <30min away typically, but in the morning on interview day it took over an hour to get to NYCOM, and someone from Brooklyn that day took even longer. It was mainly because of an overturned tractor trailer on the LIE, but still, leave super early. The Grand Central was totally backed up too as people tried to bail on the LIE. Its rush hour and there is also the school traffic too since the little kiddies are back in school.

Did anyone who sent in their deposit receive the matriculation packet yet?

I'm not going to lie, guys. I know most of you have said the interview is really lax, but I am SUPER nervous! I even had a bad dream recently in which they asked me a lot of questions I couldn't answer! :scared:😱😕

I know the feeling! I was the same way! But it really is pretty relaxed! PM me with any questions or concerns you have and I can share my experience 🙂

sure- feel free to PM me to chat about it!

To answer your questions- it was one on one and open file, but the way mine went it definitely felt like it was closed file!

Great advice. Thanks. I am yet to receive an interview invite. Who do i email? when i call they seem really short with me like i am bothering them. Please just one email would do.

Sorry, I should clarify. They have your application in front of you but not your grades, and i'm not sure about your MCATs.

Oh, they have your grades. Everything is open file.

My interviewer pressed me really hard about school selection because of my MCAT and why wasn't I attending an allopathic school. I was also asked about how I improved my gpa, so yes they have everything available to them for the interview.

Maybe every interview is different, but I mentioned something about my grade in a specific class and was told by my interviewer that they do not have that in front of them. Oh well. Regardless who cares, if you made it to he interview you passed the eye test on the grades and MCAT scores.

This wait for my letter is killing me :/. I really want an acceptance, but I'm afraid of a rejection or MedPrep. I feel as if I can't turn down another acceptance for the Med Prep program.

finally got an interview invite 😍

scared beyond belief :scared:
i know, everyone keeps saying that its a really relaxed interview but I can't help feeling that I'm going to screw this up somehow...

for all of those people still waiting, don't give up hope! I ended up sending two update letters before I heard back. and to all those recently accepted, congratulations!!!

Waiting for the letter is killing me too, I interviewed on February 3rd and figured I'd hear back around the 2 week mark based on what others have said, but still no word!!

Ashineh, I actually called up the office and asked them whether my file had even been looked up at by the admissions committee because my primary had been completed in august. The lady who answered was very nice and actually was able to tell me that information but unfortunately i never asked her for her name 🙁 Like I said, the interview invite was probably because I sent two update letters, but it never hurts to call (so long as you don't do it too much because i'm sure they're swamped with a ton of people right now). Who knows, you might luck out, I know I definitely did. I'm hoping for you and everyone else out there whose waiting to get an invite soon!

hey do any of you guys have suggestions or tips for the interview? the possibility of screwing up is starting to haunt my naps...

Does anyone know what percentage of students interviewed are actually accepted?? I have seen multiple percentages floating around on this forum but was wondering if someone asked the admissions office or knows a definite number?? Thanks!!!

Hey, do you guys think its ******ed to send a letter of intent without having ever been invited for an invite? I've been thinking about it.I'm out of school, so I don't have any updates to send either. But this school is my #1 choice

I have heard of people doing that. You have nothing to lose. Do you think it's ok o send a letter of intent after my interview? That what I'm debating right now. I interviewed last week. But I have a few deposits due and don't really want to put then because Nycom is my top choice

Hey Postal, that's actually what I did in my update letter, I stated why NYCOM was my absolute top choice (I expanded upon something I had mentioned in my supplemental app) in addition to including updates. Honestly, you have nothing to lose. For anyone whose interested I had my interview invite on the sixteenth and its for the first week or march. And every time I have talked to the admissions office they said they will be interviewing until april. So you have a little bit of time but I would sent it in soon. Good luck! :xf:

Well, I say you definitely should. They'll probably review your app soon anyway. Might as well get that letter of interest in before they do.
