To all NYCOMers -

where do you guys live? Do most people live near the school on long island? Does anyone commute from the city? Do many people move to the city for 3rd and 4th year?
How much do you guys pay for housing?

thanks.

hey there!!!
Yes, many of us live(d) at school. One of the best resources I have found was the www.newsday.com site, many land lords list there and you will avoid the fee. Living nearby school is recommended during the first two eyars as you will be expected to do a lot of work in very little time- the minutes spent on the commute will be precious, as will your sanity if you try to battle the LIE traffic. Good luck, my friend!

and what about living for years 3 + 4? Do you guys move to the city, or stay on Long Island?
Thanks

Some pointers for living w.r.t. NYCOM...

1. many landlords are very flexible here. Average pricing is ~600 per person. Studios and 1 bedrooms are more expensive, obviously.
2. if you are accepted, ask them to give you a way to access the web-board (they will know what it is), then look under "housing"--this is a very good resource.
3. Ask around. If you know anybody in the area, they might help you get housing...That's how I got my housing.
4. Unless you are very sure, try to get a month-to-month lease. Some people I know have broken leases because of conditions that they did not know about (e.g. noise)
5. Roslyn, glen cove, and oyster bay are perfect for NYCOM. I live in Oyster bay and ride my bike when the weather is nice; although the fall's cold and rainy.
6. You need a car in Long Island, although its easy to get into the city by train (~$5.00, 40 mins each way.)
7. DON'T try to commute if you live in Brooklyn or Queens or Manhattan. It's a real drag and a serious waste of time.

Good luck,
Daniel

Daniel, do many people move to the city for 3rd and 4th years? Would living in manhattan be doable for years 3 and 4?

Thanks for your help.

Dear Manhattan,

It would be cool if you could live in Manhattan during yrs. 3-4. I would rather do that than be one of the "Bridge & Tunnel" ppl. However during third year there are some classes (at least OMM), which you have to be at NYCOM for. Well, mebbe you could watch on videotape, but again, only at the library. NYCOM has a great set of rotations for hospitals, here are the choices. If you can work it so that you can work mainly at hospitals in the city, more power to you. Otherwise, its Columbia or NYU. :(

Cheers,
Daniel
