So I was already accepted into nyitcom (NY) and was recently offered an interview at touro Harlem campus and wanted everyone's opinion on which choice is better and whether or not it's worth it for me to go to the Touro interview.

I know this topic has been answered around sdn, but everywhere I look, I cannot seem to get a concrete answer.

So my decision is based on a couple of factors such as tuition and cost of living, curriculum, clinical rotations, residency placement after finishing, attendance policies, location, impression of the school, and other factors such as research opportunities.

I wanted to ask you guys to help me compare these factors in making my decision. After going to the nyitcom interview, I really liked the school (genuinely felt comfortable there). It seems that my cost of living will be similar for both schools. I think I like the way nycoms curriculum is set more than touros but touro is a little closer in proximity for me (save like half an hour).

It would be great to get input from both nycom and touro Harlem students for the other factors, such as, what are the clinical rotations like (especially when compared to one another), how is residency placement after graduating, what are the attendance policies (this is big for me, I study much better alone without mandatory lectures, pretty much taught myself physics, Chem, ochem, among other courses)?

If Nycom is the better fit, I'd rather not go to the touro interview and have it go to some else who deserves it, but maybe I'm also missing something and it would be in my better interest to go.

Any input and advise would be greatly appreciated.

I was in the same position as you. I live much closer to nycom so the choice was obvious.

The nycom campus, test pass rates, reputation, etc are all definitely better so...unless you really dont wanna commute to LI...

Thanks for the response, it helps reaffirm my decision. By car, nycom is 20 min extra so not a big deal. But by train, nycom is an hour and a has extra of traveling than touro.

Sorry, I don't go on sdn much and didn't realize there is a thread more specific for this question. I wasn't sure how to love the thread so I just completely made another one and put it in the school specific section.

Don't worry about it this is fine! Hype is a user who gets repetitively banned for stirring the pot. Carry on

And for the record, I'd go to NYIT over touro!

Thanks, I'm really leaning toward NYIT. It seems rotations, residency, among other things is better, plus I really liked the feel when I was there. Im just really interested on what the attendance policies are for both schools, so I can really finialize what I want to do.

This is such an easy question if you searched other threads about Touro NYC. Do not go here unless it was your only choice. Our clinical rotations are falling a part and we do not have enoughj rotations for students. The area of harlem has been iffy for students. 3 students have been jumped over the past year. NYIT over touroNYC anyday! NYITCOM is much more established. Do yourself a favor avoid Touro at all cost. They are a money hungry machine. Look at their application fees

Just be aware that many of NYCOM's current clinical rotations in NYC and Long Island will be non-existent next year, or in the coming years.
Lutheran has been taken over by NYU, so no more rotations there, which is quite sad because that was a terrific urban place to train.
St. Barnabas is now the primary clinical training site for the new CUNY School of Medicine, and does not offer regional positions anymore for rotations.
Maimonides is now Northwell, and aside from the future influx of Hofstra students, the hospital is now a primary clinical affiliate of Albert Einstein, and SUNY Downstate are starting to send students there too.
Winthrop is now NYU, so it will be harder to get fourth year electives.
South Nassau Communities Hospital is now Mount Sinai, and Mount Sinai said they will start their own MD IM program there, so phasing out NYCOM students will happen, just as NYU has done with Lutheran.
And many Northwell/LIJ hospitals, that used to have NYCOM students rotate at for Medicine, etc, now have Hofstra students.

NYCOM has made a good effort, though:
Catholic Health Services, NYIT form osteopathic pact - Innovate Long Island

Due to the unethical behavior the school made in the cycle before last when they overbooked thier class, and due to poor COMLEX II pass rates (for a now veteran school), I can't recommend Touro-NY.

Veteran? TouroCOM NY is still relatively a new school by professional standards, you out of all people should know this Goro. They are continuously making improvements to their Level 2 first time passrate by implementing stricter COMAT grading and providing preparatory exams before registering for Level 2.

By the way “overbooked” class was due to a Harlem admissions error, which has been resolved for a couple of years now and is old news...

NYITCOM is a very established school however they don’t support their students well, in fact they weed students out much like a Caribbean med school. TouroCOM is not perfect but they at least try their best to accept and graduate all their students.

Ah, a Toro shill. I haven't seen one of your lot show up lately. I'm walking the dog now so remind me to respond in depth later.
you have a dog and a cat? thought that only happened in cartoons

Touro-NY has graduated about 7 classes...they're not a new school anymore. They should have their clinical education in place and fully functioning, and not have COMLEX II first time pass rates in the mid 80s.

Yes, overbooking occurs, I'm not faulting them for that, but the way they handled it.

If you're going trash NYITCOM...data please on their attrition rates.

Wow 7 graduating classes! Touro NY is 10 years old. Compare that with other NY/NJ medical schools.

Ok, they're not a veteran school. Semantics and pedantic are so important. But at this point in time, they should know what they're doing. They're not BCOM.

Just based off of reading the title of the thread... NYIT. The ONE caveat I have about NYIT is their remediation policy. Please look into this more to see what happens if you end up failing a course. I’ve heard they take less pity on their students than most schools. Other than that NYIT for the win!

If it were Touro Middletown I’d say go for it! We had several ppl who got into places like nyit and pcom but chose to come here. As far Harlem, I’ll let those students do the talking..

They should, but they don't...because they are still a newer school in NY

For someone like you, working at a "top tier" DO school get your facts right...

"Newer" still doesn't mean that they're LUCOM or BCOM. They've graduated enough classes to know what should be working for their clinical education, especially in the hospital-rich environs of NYC.

And this doesn't even touch the unethical behavior of the overbooking fiasco.

So no, they're NOT getting any slack from me. Shill somewhere else.

Maybe you should give us some facts. You keep hinting at NYIT’s poor attrition rate, why don’t you give us some facts and actually cite it? One fact, is that Touro has crappy clinical education, and they repeatedly do crappy on Step 2. Touro has been running medical schools a lot longer than 10 years and they know better.

I have nothing against NYITCOM nor is there anything wrong with them, I just wished they were more forgiving with failing an exam and also their remediation policy.

Goro and Anatomygrey12, you guys get a hard on bashing Touro together? Must be nice finding each other on SDN.

Very Cute.

So instead of actually citing data or policy you make ad hominem attacks.... yep that will make people believe you that Touro isn’t garbage 🙄

Harlem has had its issues.

Middletown has a much better environment and better clinical rotations. If someone is fine with not being in NYC, it is a solid program.

As a professional,I just wanted to say/ asked isn't RVU younger than Touro-COM?
This appears to be a good time to remind everyone to keep it professional.

Okay, download the NYITCOM student handbook and start reading on page 50. It goes through the failure, remediation, and petition policy. Sounds very rough. Can you imagine, being a student that just failed an exam and then having navigate that document?

Touro Harlem or Middletown (I hear Middletown is much better) has its flaws, but students generally are well support academically and mentally.
Goro, gotta you hold off on that like button, i know you want to, but your just proving my case!

Once again... you have provided zero points of data.

But I have!

NYITCOM Student Handbook (2017–2018) | Policies | NYIT

There's nothing here that is particularly onerous or out of the ordinary from other medical schools, whether MD or DO. Basically, you fail a course, you remediate. Fail two, and you're dismissed. Fail a remediation and you get dismissed. draconian, but again, this is nothing out of the ordinary.

Actually, the wording is "be subject to dismissal"...it's not automatic, and what typically happens (at least at my school) is that you repeat the year.

So, to repeat things, I see nothing in NYITCOM's behavior that would make me raise an eyebrow, while Touro-NY two major deficits (one ethical, one academic) that, in my opinion, prevent me from recommending it to pre-meds.

NYIT-COM has some exciting changes coming next year; they're completely re-vamping the curriculum to make it almost completely case-based/active discussion, and less lecture-based.
And for clinical rotations: Medicine and Surgery will now be 8 weeks long, instead of 10, leaving more room for electives during the 3rd year.
There is also talk to start 3rd year earlier in March/April like many MD schools have started to do, vs. the typical August start date, to leave more space for electives and flex/interview time in fourth year.

Current nycom student here~

Congrats on getting accepted to NYCOM!

Tuition is around 60k and goes up every yr. I know some students who rent a bedroom for about 800-1000 with roommates in houses nearby campus.

Attendance was never mandatory for us, except for OMM/DPR/ anatomy labs. But they are changing the curriculum for the 1st and 2nd yrs to include more group and problem based learning sessions, so I'm not sure of the attendance policy going forward.

3rd yr rotations are a hit or miss. You can either apply for a regional rotation or do them at different affiliated hospitals. A lot of what I learned was from question banks and onlinemeded. And what the other poster said about NYCOM losing a bunch of it's previous clinical sites is true due to hospital systems merging/starting their own medical schools. 4th yr rotations you can either set up at affiliated sites or choose your own from any hospital you like. Unless you are going into FM/IM (usually about half the class), I didn't feel a strong mentorship from any other fields. That being said, NYCOM always has a great success matching into various specialities. You can find the match list for 2015-2017 by searching on Google.

For board prep, you will be given combank and firecracker. We only got about 3-4 weeks of dedicated at the end of 2nd yr time to study for step 1 and only about 2wks for step 2. Hopefully that will get better with the curriculum changes

Attrition rate is about 10%. We started our class with about 330 and will have slightly under 300 graduating in a few months.

Based on what you've experienced, what accounts for the attrition? Are people flunking out?

The ones that I know of who won't be graduating with us are due to either failing a class, not passing comlex 1 on prior to starting 3rd yr rotations, health issues, pregnancies, moving to different state for family reasons. I personally don't know of anyone who was dismissed from nycom.

This is concerning. 10% is high. I surprised it's that high.

A Class of 330 is BIG, and as such, I suspect that the school is taking in too many weak students in order to fill seats, and on top of this, the school is unable to salvage these people.

Despite these concerns, I'd still recommend NYITCOM > Touro-NY

Can only speak for my first year here, I personally chose TouroCom cause I'm from NYC and living at home and commuting was cheaper. I was also interested in staying in the area for residency. In terms of tuition (55k) its still not too bad, the killer is really rent and living cost. It was a difficult choice as I also got into KCUMB (Cheap) and UNECOM (Even more expensive). Common student feedback is attendance/clickers being 10% of your grade so it's basically mandatory since it could potentially mean a letter grade. Also the exam schedule is pretty tough being around one or more a week. Second semester we had a total of 33 exams (written and practical's). Second year I've been told is on a block schedule so exams are at the end of each block. I do feel supported and faculty does track your exam performance to make sure you dont fail out. As far as I know, one person left after the first semester, and I've heard it was for personal reasons. We have around 115 students in our class which is smaller than average due to the over acceptance the year prior. We got a new Dean and so far he's been very responsive, they're really big on student feedback and has been making changes. Some changes under consideration is a more flexible attendance policy.

Harlem probably can have a more of a commuter school feel as some of the students may not stick around on campus and leave to do their own thing, i.e. research etc. Middletown being more contained seems to have a closer knit feel. Its one building in 125th st Harlem and is two blocks away from the train station, very easy to get to. There's not a big issue with space, but some of the feedback that they're working on is additional study space as we share the building with the pharmacy school. Administration wise, it has been consistent with my experience in any school in NYC. Expectation is that you'll need to be organized, proactive and make sure you follow up. Professors have been approachable and are always open to meet. At the end of the day, first year is a lot of information, material isn't hard, the challenge is being organized enough in keeping your head above water.

Pick nyitcom. Touro has poor clinical rotation and still under COCA review

Not true. Touro NY has NEVER been under COCA review. However, the clinical rotations could have been better and they are making really nice improvements.

How much is NYITCOM paying you to shill?

I wish. Did the overlooking fiasco NOT occur? Were acceptees NOT rejected in order to cull the herd?

NO, you say? Tell that to the people flooding my PMs with litanies of complaint?

And what was last year's first time pass rate (with citation) for COMLEX II?

Touro Harlem here. I like to think of myself as having a relatively positive view of the school.

@Money4MyHoney, you gotta tone down the shilling like.. 2 notches.
@osteopathicmedstudent, your attitude is just the worst
@Goro i think your view of Touro hasn’t changed in 2 years. It’s not unjustified but The level 2 pass rates have been improving markedly. They’ve instituted tougher policies that IMO have been a long time overdue. The terrible pass rates were due to insanely permissive policies, like allowing students to graduate without passing boards. I knew a guy in the first graduating class at Middletown (same policy) on his 6th board retake. My point is, it genuinely seems like they’ve identified the problem and are taking the proper steps.

My viewpoint, in no order

-campus building is depressing
-my classmates are smart and very kind, but neurotic and prone to complaining
-Cost of attendance is bonkers
-facilities are adequate
-teachers are amazing, second year clinical systems lecturers are mostly bad (actually, the Harlem ones are great, the Middletown ones are not).
-no experience with admin but secondhand reports say bad things
-I feel like the curriculum actually prepared me really well for step 1, though I’m historically a strong student. I still needed to grind like hell in dedicated, but overall I do think Touro gave me the tools I needed to succeed.
-I hated flipped classroom, but come board time I’m actually glad it happened.
-the OMM department needs to teach more board-relevant OMM, and less about their experiences learning advanced OMM at St. Barnabus.
-second year ECE small groups are a hidden gem in the curriculum - probably some of my best experiences. The lectures are an enormous waste of time that need to be scrapped.
-location is PRIME. I was SO HAPPY to spend 2 years in NYC. I could literally do anything. When Touro was my only acceptance, I was disappointed. However, when my fiancée dumped me and I had a full city full of girls who I could meet up with in less than 20 minutes... I warmed up to Touro real quick. Had I been in the boonies, my depression would have destroyed me. Do not discount the value of being in a big city.

TLDR it’s a fine school, don’t discount it so easily. It’s got problems but it does it’s job and it’s in a great place.

Most importantly: Do what makes you HAPPY. When you’re happy, you do SUBSTANTIALLY better on your boards!

Citation?

I'm willing to start letting the Admissions fiasco slide, given the time it occurred, but the COMLEX II pass rate is my major concern. If I can see some evidence that it's turned around, I will take Touro-NY off my Bad Boy list.

If you google their pass rates you will see a modest upward trend in level II scores. They don’t have the latest data from last year posted, but they showed it to us in a presentation and if I remember correctly it was around 87%, Which follows the general trend pretty closely. Still not quite national average but in my opinion it does show a good-faith and effective effort in improving outcomes.

I’m not asking for an endorsement, just an open mind.

They need to get to 90%+. They're not ICOM or ARCOM
