I will be going if i can get into the program, still waiting on LOR from professors who are taking forever.
 
got into BU program but i found out about this a few days ago and applied. any ideas on how many students have been accepted already? i know they only take 25 and its pretty late in the application process

rumor has it that they wont even take 25...but they are quick in interview and decisions so it wouldn't hurt to apply.
 
Thanks bruindoc...i was thinking of doing UCLA summer, but turns out they don't grant you financial aid if you are not going to enroll at UCLA! So bummer... I agree, the 2 year program seems more structured...right now, I am considering all types of SMPs, and I keep going back and forth, but thanks to an uber-low MCAT, options are limited! It seems like the faculty at NYMC will really work closely with you and not just regard you as a huge dollar-sign (this is my fear about g-town, boston and other big programs). any thoughts or insight?

Oh man so they might not even take the 25, than might be screwed because i just barely sent my second LOR, which it took a long time to get.

hi there, i am a current m1. i was talking to levine today and he projected that the class will be around 12 students this year. i dont know if he meant there are 12 students committed as of now, or if he expects that to be the final tally. he definitely did not expect the class to be 25 tho.

Did he say whether it was due to lack of applicants, or lack of quality applicants?
 
I interviewed this week and was also told that the class will NOT be 25 Dr. Levine suggested 12-15 due to this being the programs first year. For the people who have been accepted bout how long after your interview did you receive your letter/email?
 
hey i heard back after the interview via email like 6 or 7 days after the interview. but they said they would get back to me in 1-2 weeks

my acceptance was post marked the day after i interviewed....much better feeling than waiting 8 months to be rejected like med school apps have been so far for me

dr. levine told me they had around 70-90 apps when i was there in the beginning of may so i dont think it is for a lack of applicants...i just think they are being very selective bc they need to have good numbers from our class to show the program can compete with others in future years
 
well i think i may be screwed than all of you guys have much higher GPAs than i do because I only have like a 3.1 but i'll be taking summer school so hopefully it come up a little but it will be too late by than. Hopefully 34Q mcat helps.
 
I was also wondering is it possible to get NY residency after this program
 
wow! with only 12ish people in the program, im sure the chances of acceptance the next yr will be very high. Just finished my app a few days ago, hopefully will get in!
 
n=4. 🙂 Yes, they have quick replies back (emailed 5 days after interview).
 
Apparently we're waitlisted for on-campus housing for now. I hope we'll know soon if we need to look off-campus. Has anyone checked out the dorms/apartments?
 
i just got an email today that my housing app has been received and that i will be place with people based on the order that applications come in
 
I haven't received an information packet yet, so I was told to contact Marge Riley, who told me that I was placed onto a waiting list.
 
Sigh. Unmarried couple. The housing office told us to look for something off-campus since dorm-style/sharing living room probably wouldn't appeal to us. Hoping to sign the lease to an apt. in white plains this week... took a whole month to finalize this process b/c we're all the way in CA, and they needed original documents (so no faxing!) We're actually driving across the country so we have our car. Parking at the school is free - I'm so amazed, after paying 25 cents/8 minutes at UCLA (if you could FIND parking, that is).
 
FREE PARKING!?!?! Sweet! bringing my car from CO (and august it should be 6 bucks a gallon)
 
Interviewed on 6/5 still waiting to here back. Seemed to go great except for my lack of clinical experience. What kind of clinical experience did you guys that have been excepted have??

shadowed, volunteered in the in-patent ward, and have done a year of clinical research at major hospitals...but i have even heard that that isnt much
 
I have 3+ years of undergrad research thats it so far starting next week shadowing and volunteering
 
Dr. Levine told me that committee is meeting tomorrow so hopefully i am interviewed tomorrow, do you guys think this puts me too far back in the list for on campus housing.
 
I have no clue as to how many spots will be open to us. All I know is that medical and PhD students get pick before us, and regular masters students get pick after. Seeing as how there's only 15ish of us, we'll probably all get, or not get, the same choice.

I was also told that I needed more clinical experience. All I have is some OR volunteer/shadowing. I wonder if taking an SMP contributes to showing my commitment to becoming a doctor?
 
well it sounds like I got housing according to the email i got, so hopefully everyone will

And, yes i think doing an SMP shows your commitment by not giving up
 
I was told at the interview that I had really great clinical experience so I hope this helps people compare/contrast their own unique experiences. Basically, I worked as an ophthalmic technician for a year at the hospital. My job was to take a patient's history, run some diagnostic exams on them, keep the clinic flowing smoothly and to prep stuff for the minor surgeries. I think what made it valuable was that I got to observe/assist first the residents, then the fellows, and finally the attendings as they diagnosed/treated their patients through the course of their illness. I'm not sure if every university hospital allows undergrads to work as technicians, but it was amazing, and I highly recommend poking around to see if you can get something similar if you feel that you need more. The best part was that they trained me completely on the job (didn't have to take an exam or get a license).

My clinical experience : limited, but was an EMT and an Army Medic.

GPA 3.4 cumulative, 3.35 science. Would be 3.7 without my first semester.

MCAT : 36Q.

I talked to Dr. Levine on the phone today. He stated that I would be a strong candidate, assuming of course that my credentials are bonafide.

I plan to tell them in the interview that I have taken the undergraduate versions of every course offered in this program, and made an A.

Dr. Levine also stated that they are looking for students "on the cusp". He seemed to feel that I should be able to get into medical school even without a program like this one. I sure hope I'm not rejected because my scores are too high 😱

I've heard tons of stories of people struggling to get accepted to a medical school with a 3.4. A high MCAT just doesn't compensate very well. I might get in, I might not, but I want to load the deck in my favor.

Also, I plan on pulling out all of the stops if I get accepted. I'm going to do everything I can to be top of the class, so that I get a 4.0 in this program. Hopefully that will mean I would be a shoe-in to go to NYMC the following year if nothing else works out.
 
how strict is NYMC about their gpa requirement? i saw on their website saying 3.0? anyone know if they'll take you if you got a lower gpa but high mcat?

how high of an MCAT, if its like 35+ than they'll proabably take it, though i am not 100% sure.
 
somebody said that the committee was meeting today has anybody received an email from them today yet?
 
Habeed with your scores i'm sure you can get into your state school this year! great job on all your hard work. im anxiously waiting to hear from the board... i hope my application was complete by yesterday. does anyone know how often the board meets?

I was definitely planning on being n=5.....but then i got off the waiting list at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. It is a 4-year MD program, but I had my heart set on being in New York. Any thoughts? What should I do?!
 
I applied to St george's in the islands...but I decided because I want a difficult specialty that I would be better off being a US grad in five years than a FMG in 4...so I would say it depends on what type of Dr. you want to be...primary care? then I would say save a year and go to Ireland
 
How do I release my MCAT score to NYMC? I don't see them listed anywhere, not even in the "Other Schools and Programs" list. My scores are already available to AMCAS schools - will that work for the Accelerated M.S. program too?
 
I went to the MCAT THx website where it let me "create and print my own official report". Print out a hard copy, and snail mail (perhaps even email?) it in. They can verify your report with the generated code, which you should include somewhere.

So I fished an interview invite out of my SPAM folder today : (. I'm wondering if anyone can give me a heads up on the types of questions asked. Was it stressful at all? - Thanks!
 
No, it wasn't stressful. Dr. Levine was the nicest professor I've ever interviewed with. I just took my time asking every question I could about the program. The interview with Dr. Lerea was more formal, so you should expect the usual med school interview questions, e.g. about your background, why you want to be a doctor, etc.

I interviewed on 6/5 still have not heard anything either way back. As far as I know from this thread everybody else who interviewed heard back within a week. I am starting to get really nervous now....
 
They didn't specifically mention a time frame just that they were going to meet early the following week.... Monkey22 did you here by mail or email first?

wait list ay? I am sure you are qualified, but that might just mean they have sent out the number of offers that want in the class...wonder what that number is
 
My lack of clinical experience I think did me in. I am starting this week shadowing 2 diff docs and volunteering at hospital and clinical trial site with these 2 docs (dermatology, eye surgeon). I wonder if I can send them a letter explaining what I will be doing for the rest of the summer.....
 
still waiting on in an interview request, since people are being waitlisted I dont think I have a shot anymore, although i did do very well this last quarter pulled off 3A's and an A- hopefully they get to see that before i get rejected.
 
I am sorry to hear that. As you were waitlisted and not rejected, you probably still have a chance. I recommend giving it a final prolonged hurrah before letting go. And let us know if your status changes.
 
Yes, definitely email them and say what you're doing this summer. It can only help, and may keep your file "fresh". It also lets them know that you're serious about attending NYMC.
 
what do they consider 'clinical experience'? shadowing? volunteering? hands-on EMT type stuff?

how many people do you suppose they're interviewing for the 25 spots?
 
I presume all of those will be considered clinical, i am not sure how many they are interviewing but someone said the class will probably not be that big considering its the first year and one person is on the waitlist so maybe they are already on capacity. I am still waiting on interview. BTW, what are your stats ANON.
