Vital book is a DVD disc of all the textbooks and nyu manuals and videos etc in one disc. So, it is great as a reference. But, for your exams you'd be better off reading from the transcripts and lecture slides.

Hmm, student lounge and cafeteria, I guess you might have gotten info about the new cafeteria and student lounge being built at the basement level. Well, the new student lounge looks very nice and has plasma tvs , comfy seating etc. The new cafeteria is huge and looks nice too. At present they're waiting for the fire dept inspection and approval, b4 they can inaugurate that.

Dr. hannibal.

For students asking questions about fafsa, pls do take the time to read my thread where I'd have probably covered all this. the link to that is in one of the pages in this thread.

Hi Dr Hannibal,
Thanks for your time and all the useful info.
I received the curriculum details/like a rough timetable for the first year at NYU last week and there are no doubts that it is a pretty intensive program.
When do we have to take part-II national boards? In your opinion is it wise to start preparing for them now as most likely there would be a time crunch during the three years of the program. Please advise.
Also this news about the replacement of theNERBS by one year residency,I feel that the students should be informed about it before they enrol for the program as I'm sure many students will have time & finance relted limitations and sudden changes like this can come as an unpleasant surprise. Also Iassume that we will be paid a stipend during the residency, but its going to definitely be very little in comparison to the salary you would earn at a private practice and that matters a lot in those initial years when your goal is to payoff most of the student loans with high interesr rate.
Your opinions and advice is appreciated.
THanks
DDS_2008.

The new regulations state that, a dental student should've passed their part-1 atleast by the end of the fourth year and the part-2 within two yrs of graduation. But, ofcourse you wouldnt be eligible to practice or for any of the residency programs without these. Most students give their part-2 by the beginning of final year. Hope this helps.

Most residency programs now, do not give a stipend except the hospital based residencies. So, if you're doing a GPR, you'd be paid for the year. Your annual income as a resident could be anywhere betn 38k to 52k depending on the individual program. And yeah, unless the regulation becomes concrete, the program is not obligated to inform you. As of now, it is more like a rumour and you need to treat it like that.

Lemme know if you wanna know anything more.

Dr. hannibal

Thanks, Dr Hannibal for the info.
Can you explain what the GPR is?Also for one to get into a hospital based residency what are the eligibility requirements?
In your opinion what all should one be referring to ,to prepare for the part-II boards?
Thanks again for taking the time to answer all my queries.I really appreciate it.

Congrats to all for NYU admission. Just had 2 questions regarding the NYU process since I am planning to apply next year for class of 2009:

1) Is NYU on a rolling admissions process?
2) If yes, what is the earliest anyone has sent his or her application and received an interview?

Thanks

Hi Snowdrop,
Configuration and requirements of the laptop needed is clearly mentioned in the following web page www.nyu.edu/dental/compreq.html.

Hello Dr.Hannibal
I have come to know thst changing from H4 status to F1 is more beneficial, but I wanted to know the on campus job oppurtunities for us and whther do we have time to manage jobs with our curriculum and whether it is really worth tranfereing from H4 to F1.

Thanks

DDS2008- GPR stands for general practice residency. It is a one year residency to improve your skills in dentistry in a hospital setting. YES, you do get paid while you do this. Some ppl do consider this in place of joinin a private practice as the remunerations in the would almost be the same and u get to learn more. The only other hospital based residency is the OMFS residency.

No doubt, havin an f-1 visa helps you with in campus job oppurtunities, but, I dunno if you'd have the time to handle that. But, yeah, I do study and work at the same time during my leisure time and somehow seem to have managed.
But, you really dont have much free time and there are times I have to tell my employers that I wouldnt be coming. I dunno if the above two lines make any sense to you all, but I'd be happy to clarify any questions you have. I'd prefer devoting my time to research oppurtunities than to work cuz, it helps you in the future. Also, remember that second year is the time when nyu does some major class resizing. So, you wouldnt wanna waste the oppurtunity.

Microsoft office with MS powerpoint is a must. Students get most of the other softwares free like adobe acrobat reader, the norton anti-virus software (professional edition) etc.

Dr. hannibal

Hello classmates,

have any of you received the award package?spoke with fao and came to know that the award packages were being sent out.if anybody has received pls let us know.

Thanks, Dr Hannibal.
One more question...what are the eligibility requirements for a candidate to get into a hospital based residency? Do they consider your academic performance,NDBE scores for the selection process?
What study material do you suggest for the NDBE-partII preparation?
Thanks.
DDS-2008.

I havent given my part-2 yet. so will let u know when i give it.

The OMFS residency is really competitive, u gotta have the drive to get in to the program. A score of 90 and above would definetely help (NBDE part 1). You should also complete a few externships. A good academic standing is necessary.

GPR programs are easy to get into but getting into a good hospital is very important.

Hey,Dr Hannibal,Thanks again.
What do you mean by 'good' hospital?Do you mean one which offers a good clinical exposure? Could you elaborate on that?
Which hospitals are the sought-after good ones?
Let me know when you get a chance.
All the best with all your tests, submissions etc & thanks once more.

Hi walktooth.
I am awaiting my award letter. So exactly what it contains,I wouldnt be able to tell you .But I do have a rough idea. After you have submitted your completed and signed FAFSA application,it is processed, you receive your SAR(Student aid report) and within a few weeks, you should be receiving an award letter from your school, which has the information about the loan amount that has been federally approved for you and the remainder that you are supposed to arrange through private loans. This is what I've heard about the award letter but do not have any first hand info as I havent yet myself received it.
