Many schools offer an OD/MS/MBA/etc, and of the schools that offer it, you must be a certain GPA first year to apply. The course load is manageable- especially for gifted students who have a high GPA first year to begin with. Generally speaking you'll take biostats, ethics, etc to allow you to perform your research/defend your thesis well.
Those who I know who completed the program do not have regrets, and many of them end up going into residency and being leaders in the optometric community.
Not saying it's a good or bad thing, but make sure you're okay with additional exams each semester, performing clinical research, and ultimately defending a thesis before graduation.
Good luck!
