I noticed that ICO has an OD/PhD program in conjunction with Univ. of IL. I can't find any real info about it. Does anyone know where I can find out more, or does anyone know anything about OD/PhD programs. If not I will just ask at my interview over break.

Actually, rpames, it is held through University of Chicago, not UIC. As quoted from my catalog:

"This program would allow the qualified optometry student to complete most of the didactic training and begin their clinical activities toward the OD degree prior to initiating the MS or PhD program at the University of Chicago, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Clinical training and activity for the OD degree would also continue during the completion of the MS or PhD degree, and the OD degree would then be awarded after the completion of all didactic and clinical requirements of the Illinois College of Optometry. For more information on the Graduate Programs of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences please see their catalog on line at http://catalogs.uchicago.edu/divisions/opth.html "

Hope this helps!🙂

Thanks, I appreciate it. Looks like a lot of work.😀

When I was at SUNY interviewing, I asked about their combined programs in OD/Vision Science and they told me that students who do those are generally interested in a research/teaching career rather than a clinical one. (Anyone who does it is definitely interested in a long career being a *student*, anyway!)

I'm not sure about other schools, but SUNY has combined OD/MBA and OD/MPH programs. I can see how either of those might be useful if you planned a career combining clinical practice with business ownership or administration.

They have OD/PhD at UHCO, too.

It's a SIX TO SEVEN year program. That's some serious dedication. One of my friends is in the program. .. I don't know how she's doing it.

Ayiyiyi, that's a long time! Are the programs consecutive, or will she do the OD first and then continue to the PhD?

All I know is you do your first two years with your OD school entering class.. then your third year you take your grad school classes... and then I think you take qualifiers and start doing your research. But, I'm not sure how it all works after the third year.
