OFFICIAL: 2003 UPITT countdown

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Because I'm about to go crazy as it is, that's why not!

Oh, what the h3ll ... I heard Wednesday is the big day, but someone with more recent info said MONDAY is the day ...

So when do they send these acceptance emails? The day they decide on you? Where did you hear Wed? How exactly does this work? Have they already come up with a point total for people with completed files? Is it just a matter of figuring out cutoffs? I find it hard to believe they will review every single applicant whose file is complete in one day.

In early January, I was told Feb. 26 by the admissions director (she offered the info; I had called about something else). More recently, someone at SDN said they had talked to someone on the committee, and that the applications have been scored, and Monday they are meeting to decide where the cut-off will be. Letters will go out. Most accepted applicants will be contacted by their interviewers by e-mail Mon or Tue.

yikes...so if i don't get an email that means i either got rejected or my file wasn't complete in time to be scored.

Or else your interviewers are slackers. 🙂

argh. which of the 'countdown' threads should i check next....

I remember on the interview day they talked about changing the curriculum. Does anybody know the details on this?

the change of the curriculum was to condense the pre-clinical section to 18 months and have you start clinical work midway through the 2nd year, as is done at several other schools. They said if it happens we would receive a note saying that it would go into effect with our acceptance.

wait...they're talking about changing the curriculum for this year's incoming class?

I heard about a more drastic change. Like a requirement to fulfill some major project by the end, such as a thesis.

yes (in answer to lola). the people in admin seemed to think it would happen. the professors i talked to seemed to think it wouldn't.

They didn't say anything about it at my Sept. interview ... but that would totally rock.

hmm... seems like that would take A LOT of preparation. have they been working on this for a while? seems like quite a change to make. uvm is implementing a new curriculum this year but has been working on it for 6 years. they already had the 18 month curric before this change though.

Who, UVM or Pitt? Pitt starts in April for now.

upitt have been working on it/discussing it for years (they said). however, it's been a few (and I quote) "obstinate professors" that have prevented it's implementation till now. However, the admin say they have made the committment to push it through now.

So what do you guys think of Pitt's curriculum? I think it is cool that they have only one tough science class at a time, but how much info can you really retain when you are forced to learn all of the anatomy in just 6 weeks?

I talked to a Committee member and a Prof and they both said that the condensed 18-mo basic science training is not gonna happen during our time. That's unfortunate. 🙁 It may happen one or two years after our class/year.

t minus 2 days until decision time.

shiit, i just wanted an excuse to get this back to page 1

So I'm guessing no one has heard from Pitt yet?

where is this coming from?

just called pitt. wed will be the acceptance review date.

Ok, great. But what is an "acceptance review date."

I'm gyuessing thats where they decide what thier point cutoffs will be for acceptance. From what I understand they've already reviewed the majority of applicants and given them point totals. All they have to do is decide what scores are they going to accept and thus must figure out what their cutoff score is gonna be.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I just called the office to update some contact info, and the lady told me that they are meeting to make decisions on Wednesday (26th) to make decisions, and they are sending them out on Friday the 28th. She said that no decisions will go out over email, but she did update my phone number, so maybe some people will get news over the phone. Most people should hear by mail early next week.

Good luck all.

I just got an interview invite from pitts, what do you think my chances are interviewing so late with them...am I just interviewing for a waitlist spot?

not necessarily. i was there yesterday and they said they have some spots open still. i don't know if they will when you are interviewing, but they are not sending off all of their outright acceptances on the mass acceptance date. (though i got the feeling they are sending out most of them)

Grr...email notification would've been better. I guess snail mail works too. Too bad I'll be at an interview and won't have the opportunity to stalk the mailman.

At least they'll finally figure out cutoffs tomorrow. Feels like I'm waiting for the results of a midterm.

I don't know how they are doing things this year but in the past, people that were accepted found out at about the same time their interviewers did. So your first notice will probably be via snailmail...and mail takes FOREVER to get out of Pittsburgh (up to 5 days to California)

Good luck

My best to all my UPitt interview homies!

I hope they let a schlep like me in 🙂

it's judgement day

I'll called Pitt today. They said decisions will not show up on the online status check.

just called pitt. they say that decisions get mailed friday to students as well as the faculty and student interviewees. in cases where decisions arrive to the interviewers before the interviewees, some interviewers will contact the interviewees to congratulate them. however, pitt does not regulate this.

Thanks for the great information guys.

I'm expecting a rejection but at least I know now when I should expect to get it.

My worst interview ever was at UPitt.

Good luck to you guys.

Has anyone who interviewed not gotten the financial aid email? Maybe its sent only to waitlisted and accepted students? Or those who will be waitlisted and accepted according to the formula from past years ...

It's supposed to go to everyone. Besides, the e-mail went out well before they made the decision.

The first line of the email said that it's NOT any indication of your chances of being accepted. It was sent to everyone who interviewed.

IF what everyone is saying is true, that they mail the decisions tomorrow, I wouldn't expect to hear anything for another week. Pitt's campus mail system is really slow.

Bump...Hopefully we get some emails tomorrow. I am curious as to what will happen if we don't get an accept? Will we receive a letter in the mail saying we are rejected or waitlisted? Will those letters be sent out the same day the accepts are sent out(tomorrow)? Anyonw know?

Keep our fingers crossed...

I feel your pain, UCLAMAN, regarding ucla 🙁

no word from pitt yet from anyone? i called the admissions office and got a vague "maybe the student interviewers (sometimes they email you) will receive the acceptances today...or maybe monday or early next week." i am going nuts. this entire process has made me realize that i possess the maturity level of a 7-year-old on christmas eve.

good luck....

just called pitt. yeah, they were pretty indirect about it. as of 4:00pm eastern, they said no decisions have been mailed out yet. 😡 they added that monday would be the latest date when decisions would be mailed out. anyone care to confirm this?

does that mean they will get stuff moving later today even after office hours or will they be in during the weekend sending stuff? or are they just sending stuff out monday? gees...admissions offices...if they are gonna send stuff out monday then why don't they just say monday? why must they always be so vague about things?

I had the impression that they were in the process of printing, sealing etc and that they would get as many done as were possible...that they didn't know if they would finish...whatever the did finish would get stuck in university mail box today...but that it might therefore not get sorted to the US mail till monday...and that they would continue/finish up if necessary on Monday, which would probably get dumped into the second mail on Monday.

ie most things won't actually go out till monday, but they're still in the middle of sealing a couple hundred envelopes and making sure the right letters go in the right envelopes.

Then they should've said...."We are in the process of printing the letters and sealing them in envelopes. If we are lucky we'll have some ready to be shipped today. But the majority of the letters will probably be shipped on Monday."

...or something to that effect. Why must they be so indirect about things? grr

ah well...more waiting....whats new? 😀

well, thats pretty much what they did say...except that it was certain that the majority, if not all, would go today...but might not reach the US mail till monday

maybe it's the chinese whisper effect thats causing confusion 😉

fyi- i was in the office and they've been stuffing envelopes all day.

when they finally go out, they cc us a copy and we email you as soon as we hear (or at least we should), which is about 1-2 days before you guys.

our mailboxes were empty this afternoon, so don't expect anything till monday.

dont expect to get anything till about tuesday.
