Official 2007 Interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey,

I just got the temple acknowledgement as well. University of Florida told me that they will be reviewing my application when it is complete, so I am guessing I am not a preferred applicant since they already sent out some invites based on preliminary info. I haven't heard anything from any of the NY programs yet, but I don't expect to either with my scores...at least not this early anyways. 🙄

keep your chin up-there's no magic here...all of us can only match at one place so we need to keep that in perspective...all we really need is that one spot that we want...that wants us right back

and then *poof* we're anesthesiologists

I now understand the meaning of the phrase 'the silence is deafening'

I am probably 5 email checks away from stroking out

not to poke fun at you or anything...but that's actually pretty funny

I do kind of agree though...I've contemplated starting a petition to inform all programs that I don't want an email from then unless it has something to do with offering me an interview/making arrangements...or it is a flat out rejection....all the other stuff is killing me...no OHSU...I don't want to apply for your research track....that's the only ERAS message/email regarding programs I got today 👎 👎

It was meant to be funny...I'm really not THAT crazy, yet. 😉
I got an invite from UTMB in galveston for anes today via email

Not sure when to schedule it, and they didn't mention dinner the night before or hotel...is it rude to call and ask about hotel?

I don't know...all the invites I got came with the hotel information and dinner etc included....do you have to call and schedule a time? Maybe they will share more information with you then...or you could do something like ask when the best time to arrive is...or if they have a list of nearby hotels that are commonly used by interviewees....that would surely answer your questions

Quick answer to some of the things you all are talking about

You should schedule your interviews ASAP. After you get 8 to 12 of them, start cancalling the ones you don't want. No one gets offended by cancelling - so long as you do it in advance

First round interviews (as the programs offer the initial spots) come mostly in september and october, by November most (for me included) were wait lst invites (as in a spot opened up)

As I recall a lot of the places that didnt fill last year filled the year before - its not neccessarily that they are not competitive.

Thanks for clearing that up! I was wondering if a program I applied to offered interviews to other people, but not to me, if that was basically a rejection. But what you are saying makes sense. It sucks a little less, but still sucks.
UTMB says to call or email. Thanks for the tip DLover. I'm biting the bullet, and emailing them tonight since they are kind enough to consider adequate for a first round interview.

Do places open up for people on the wait list?

I would assume they are the same as last year. If so, UTMB puts you up in a nice hotel. There's no dinner the night before, but they take you to lunch on the interview day. We went to some private club for lunch that was really nice. They'll probably tell you this stuff when you schedule your interview so I wouldn't ask about it right now.

Do places open up for people on the wait list?

From last year it seams that most places would send out a ton of invites, then more would trickle in (based on my constant checking of a thread like this last year!) -presumably spots opening to cancelations. There were a sizeable minority of places that seemed to send invites out in waves, the only one I recall like that was Loma Linda, but there were many others. And yes, lots of wait-list spots open up.

That's just not true. Nobody even gets our dean's letters until November which is a big part of determining interviews (at least for the more competitive spots). At my school (a UC) it works this way according to the chairman: they use a point scale (x points for your med school, x for your step 1, x for key words in the last paragraph of your dean's letter, and a certain amount of points if you've published) and based on points they determine who gets interviewed. they will not be doing this until november. i guarantee that almost all schools are on some sort of a similar point system, they just have to do it given the amount of applications and the full picture is simply not available for a few months. sure some schools are already offering interviews but i'm pretty sure this is based on step 1 scores alone (i.e. their point system says that if you got above a 230 or 240 that is enough to interview you without further info). i'm sure this is the case because my first interviews came about 2 hours after turning in if my application and without any letters of rec. California schools in particular (according to friends in residency now) don't start offering many interviews until Dean's letters are in.
Maybe some schools are only waitlisting after Oct. but those are almost definately the minority and it seems like a lot of people are getting worked up already for no good reason. there is plenty of time for us all to be stressed, let's not waste our energy early on (which it is right now) =).
and as for the point systems i noted, our chairman makes it clear that though this is a necessary evil it is not the end-all-be-all. he encourages people to email any schools you don't get interviews at that you really want them at and encourage them to look beyond the numbers, he says they've gotten a lot of great people over the years from doing that.
sorry for the massively long post but there is just no way that november interview requests are "wait-list" requests.

Anyone hear anything from the Detroit programs? What about U of IOWA or U of Wisc?

I've never been so reluctant for the weekend to come. Would some one just send off a FLARE when things really get going!!!😀 BTW I have been reading some of ther other specialty threads and it looks like the game is still EARLY. One thread said if no or few invites by Nov. 10th that is worry time. Posting this for myself as well as anyone out their that wants time to move a whole hell of a lot faster!!! Have a great weekend.

Careful with Michigan as a DO.. I know they are a little tricky in terms of intern year. I don't completely understand it all but just a heads up.

SLU Today too!!! WooHoo!!

I also got an ivite for a prelim in CA...but of course...I haven't been invited for an anesthesia program in CA...yet...if ever...so I guess I won't schedule it for awhile? Would anyone else schedule it for late and then cancel if they got no CA invites?

UT-Houston 9/22 by email!

Just wondering, did you have your undergrad transcript in to them before the invite? Also, did you have your Step II scores in to them before as well?

When i spoke to them, they said those two things must be met before offering an invite.

I had my Step 1, 2CK, 2CS, and 3 letters.

U of Wisc hasn't begun offering interviews yet. They have waited for Deans letters in previous years, although I cannot promise that to be true this year. FYI- they tend to limit the number of interviews because they try to really get to know each interviewee, which takes time and reduces volume.

Its an excellent program with good morale and a strong emphasis on learning rather than scut cases. I did a 4 week rotation in the department, so let me know if you have any questions about the program or the people.

For all the SLU interviewees, did you have all of your letters in at the time of offer?

no...still only have 2 of my letters in...I feel like I need to hunt down and club my remaining writers over the head Flintstone style...but I just don't think that's the right approach to get them to finish up 😎

If done in a respectful way, that might just work

For all the SLU interviewees, did you have all of your letters in at the time of offer?

I received two interviews without any LORs uploaded (my Deans office screwed up!). I now have two letters in and I got the offer from SLU on 9/22. I think programs may wait for the LORs, but I doubt that most LORs will make much difference because they all say the same thing. If you can get a senior faculty member to call you one of the best students they have worked with in their career, thats different. Then again, that letter may not even get read prior to deciding to offer you the interview.

Invite to University of Cincinnati today....I've had a steady stream of invites so I am not feeling nearly as stressed as before! 🙂

If only I could get some TY invites for the advanced programs to which I applied 🙄

Interviewed there today....👍

I know it doesn't count since I am doing an away there, but the PD said they would be sending out invites for middle/end of Oct. So those that applied to their program should hear something soon enough.

Hello All,

I got offered a CA-1 position for 2008 at KU Med today after interviewing last week and I cordially accepted. I have slightly different circumstances than most. I am a flight surgeon in the Navy, completed my internship in 2004 at Portsmouth Naval MC, and I applied outside the match. I can not offer much help to alleviate alleviate the current "will I get interviews?' tension, but would be happy to answer any questions regarding the actual interview, or about the program at KU Med. I graduated from Nova Southeastern University COM in 2003. I only interviewed at KU, it was my top choice for a combination of program strength and geography (went to KU for undergrad).

Good Luck to all!
