To all the people who were rejected from IU, how did you find out? Email?
This is for anyone who applied to IU or other state schools as an OOSer and have already gotten the axe: Why did you apply there? Were you unaware of their highly restrictive IS preference? Or did you have some reason or connection to the state that led you to believe you would not get summarily rejected, too?
Although I'm still waiting for my rejection letter, I applied to IU using the same logic as chad5871.
Also, their class size is like 300 students. So while the OOS% may not be favorable, I figured I should give it a shot.

Maybe they were schools he wanted to go to? Like you said, he's a very competitive applicant. If anyone could get accepted at an OOS public school, it'd be him. I don't see any reason not to apply somewhere if you've got decent scores and want to go there.
Last year, IU interviewed 40 out of 250 internationals. That is pretty damn high. Many other schools I am applying to interview ~5% of internationals. For $30, it was well worth a try. Money is really not a concern at this point.
But not at schools that routinely reject almost all OOS applications UNLESS the applicant has a connection to the state.
Seems more likely he did not do his homework and is misinterpreting the OOS acceptance chances and stats at these schools. If he was looking for OOS publics to round out his primaries, he should have looked at the 3 VA schools that accept lots of OOS (UVa, EVMS, and VCU), and maybe some of the others that give OOS applicants a fair look: Michigan, Vermont, SUNYs, Penn State...he also would be fairly competitive at a bunch of well regarded private schools that in all likelihood would end up being less expensive to attend than the OOS publics...
PS: it is not too late for him to apply to some of the schools I listed above - I strongly recommend the VA schools for him.
Around half the 19 schools he has applied to are OOS publics where he has very low chances...if he was trying to increase his chances at an allo school beyond his instates, he went about it in a funny way...
chill out mom
Bitter because you got the early boot from IU for the very reasons I am describing - no state ties?
LOL
lol nope. Sounds like you're the bitter one judging by your posts. Good luck with your app cycle too. Adios.
You couldn't be further from the truth. I am a realist, and I am cynical, and I don't mince words. But bitter? I have nothing to be bitter about, but it sounds like you do...
buh bye!
Oh for God's sake, there's a difference between being a realist and being purposefully, inexplicably abrasive. Worry about your own applications!
Flip is just being honest here. This is the biggest problem with our generation. Somebody says something that we don't like/don't want to hear, and they are automatically labeled as the bad guy. Flip wrote what he did in a direct manner that wasn't rude if you ask me.
Was thinking the same thing. Stop being so affronting and try to be supportive/cooperative. This is a support forum, not an outlet for your socially destructive gunner mentality.
I do have family that lives in Indiana, although I don't necessarily consider that a strong tie to the state. However, getting rejected pre secondary doesn't exactly give you a shot at explaining any ties you may have.
In regards to the schools I applied to, my OOS schools were dictated by location. I have either lived in, or have family/in-laws that live in all of those states. I initially planned to only apply IS, but since I had to complete AMCAS to apply to Baylor I figured I would throw in a few more schools to calm my nerves. It would take a lot to get me to go to an OOS school if I get accepted IS.
Good luck to everyone applying this year. Hopefully this thread won't grow too long!
Oh, and I did review the MSAR prior to applying and I do realize that a number of my selections have low OOS%.
I posted because others who have not yet applied may learn from this guy's mistake. Maybe he doesn't think his app choices were a mistake, but other's reading this thread may learn something about OOS apps in certain states and choose to avoid his fate.

I think your mistake was in assuming that people want your unsolicited analysis of their app choices. If someone asks for advice on their choices, by all means be honest and brutal if necessary, but the rejection thread is not the place to do it.
Dude, the poster in question has his MDApps attached to his SDN, more or less an open invitation to questions.
People who do NOT want others asking questions about their apps should NOT link to their MDApps...
No, people can be offering their mdapps for informational purposes only. I mean, it seems like pretty basic manners to know that if you are going to offer criticism it's best if they ask you for it. And on the rejection thread no less. 🙄 It takes a certain amount of courage and openness to post your rejections for the benefit of the rest of the group, correct? Way to discourage that...it's not like they can go fix their mistake (if it was in fact a mistake).
Anyway, whatever, you and I don't see eye to eye. Let's leave it at that.
Y'all need to chill.
I'm definitely pissy today. Thank god it's friiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiday. 🙂

just a question -- how do you guys know you were rejected already for presec's??
and p.s. stop hating on west virginia!! 🙂
The last thing you'd want to do is take advice from a cynical premed. Sorry, but they're at the bottom of my list.
Moving on
I'd much, much rather take advice from a successful matriculant. The general consensus is: apply everywhere you can, don't worry about the money. If there is one common regret I see with many matriculants, it's that they underestimated their chances and did not apply to more schools that they just might have gotten into.
You do realize that most of the people responding to these threads is a pre-med, right? Good advice is good advice, no matter who provides it.
If you don't like what somebody says, or just don't like the way they say it, feel free to ignore it...
