saribou13 : I have an awesome job as an RA in Rockland County NY- geriatric psychiatry. normal salary excellent benifits good clinical AND research experience. It is a pre-grad students dream job. If you do decide to go RA and are in NY (i know you're looking at Fordham) let me know I would try to pull s/t for you

Ditto. I've worked as an RA for Yale for the past 3+ years. We're always looking for new, eager, people, especially ones who plan to stay for 2/3 years (the duration of a project) and hope to go on to grad school. If you ever find something here you're interested in, feel free to PM me and i'll see who i know to help in any way i can 🙂 Trust me, i know how hard it is to find a well paying and interesting RA position 🙂 I highly recommend it though, it's amazing clinical and research experience.

Just called Missouri- St. Louis...they are sending out interview offers TODAY...and I got one...YAY! (clinical)
Interview is 2/27

I just got an email inviting me to interview at Missouri St. Louis (Clinical) on the 20th so they must have two interview days.... I am so excited😀

I can't believe I am actually able to write soemthign positive here: Email from POI on 1/27 from UMASS Boston for interview on Feb 6th or Feb 13th!!! 😀

Now it's time to seal the deal!:xf:

Well, I meant calling the dept, not the POI. I wouldn't dare contact the POI. 😀

But, okay, guess I will have to fight the urge!

I know, it's rough! Even just 5 (6?) years ago when I applied, email wasn't used for these things as often as now. All my rejection letters came by snail mail! Not that I hadn't inferred the results. Depts certainly didn't update their websites like they do now, so you folks get quite a bit more info than in years past. It probably doesn't make it that much easier now though...

If there's a general program or info number, and you really want a status update, that should be fine. But I think the last poster who had good luck calling POIs probably got pretty lucky. I don't think most POIs want to return emails/phone calls from 20-50 applicants.

Sry for being neurotic, but could you just let us know just how close to the end of the alphabet you are? (I am down there too, and not that I think I have any itsy bitsy chance of actually getting an interview, but it would just give me some peace of mind to know). Thanks!

When I was looking for a job, I got on offer in Miami that would have paid $24,000/year, which incited a panic attack because that is not "living" in Miami. Then I got the offer I chose for about $27,000/year in Atlanta, which is plenty (you're not rich, but if you're responsible you can save money). It's just about finding the right job, and if you have parents that don't mind you staying with them until you FIND the right one, then it's in your best interest to take your time looking and find one that gives you good experience, good benefits (I have good health insurance because I work at a university), and a do-able salary.

Also, I agree that working for at least 2 years is a must for a job. When you promise that, you get better jobs.

URI? Anyone? URI? All silent...

Also hoping to hear from Rutgers Ph.D., though I'm not counting on it. Here goes another nerve wracking day!

Thank you so much, that's so nice! I actually live in Chicago right now, but I'm from NY, so looking at schools there was an option to move close to my family again.

I'm applying to a masters program that is a good fit for my research interests as a "backup" plan, but if i don't get in to that either, then I will need to consider looking for RA jobs... It sounds like the ones at hospitals and such seem to be the better-paid ones, right?!

Also I've already been out of school for almost 3 years now. I work full-time in an unrelated field and I only got paid like $29K for the first two years. I can barely get by here w/ that, so any kind of pay cut is scary. Psychology is a career change for me compared to what I actually went to college for. I feel like I'd rather do a Masters so that when I'm finishing and applying to PhDs again, if I don't get in that time, I can at least go get my licensure or something, instead of being back at square one. I dunno.. that's just my personal opinion at the moment, but of course I could be wrong!

Getting a masters always freaks me out because I've heard it makes it harder to get into a Ph.D. program. They like you to be trained all in one place.

I heard that too- which makes me nervous...

For those of you who have heard from uf, did you apply to the clinical department or clinical and health psychology?

I have only ever heard that rumor on this forum and I really hope that is not true! That would be absurd for 2 extra years of school to negatively effect your chances. I personally would not have had near the amount of contacts and research experience if I had not done a Master's first. I know many people who are currently in a PhD program who all have their Masters.

(maybe I am the wrong person to chime in though since I have not yet received an invite) 😕

I don't think that's true at all; most of the programs I've looked at have at least 25% of their entire clinical program having come in with Master's degrees. Getting a Master's is a good way to "fix" weak points in your application - getting your GPA up, getting more research experience, getting to know people who could write you stellar recs, and also prove that you have what it takes to succeed in graduate school...

I am in a master's program and when I got there I hit the ground running, two years ago I basically "picked" the profs I wanted to work with and get to know and who would end up being able to write recs for me...I didnt even use any from undergrad, and it seems to have worked out fine...

On the other hand, if you don't really do anything that changes your application much, I dont think it really makes a difference either way. I've had a few professors say that whether or not having an MA helps or not is a case by case sort of thing, but none have told me that it hurts👍

I have heard that on here too, which at first discouraged me from thinking about it. But at the same time, it's like when does the waiting end and real life begin?? If I get a Masters degree I can at least start working in the field of my choice while I'm waiting to get into a PhD program, instead of taking more classes and doing more research while working at a stupid desk job that I hate (lol here right now!). So I dunno... maybe there's not a "right" answer... sometimes you just have to follow your heart...

For what it's worth, I did a one year MA after not getting into any schools during my first time around, and although I wasn't crazy about the program, I do think it helped me have more success during this application season. From what I've heard, programs are often interested in applicants who seem mature (read: a little older), and they want to see a certain amount of tenacity. Plus, if your grades from undergrad are not super competitive, it's a good way to prove that you can handle graduate-level courses.

Hi all,

Because I have been way too anxious (and have applied to way too competitive programs), I contacted some program coordinators. Here is what I got back as replies:

-U of Michigan: they are sending out invites, should be done by the end of next week.
-Northwestern (Feinberg): Calls to invited applicants will be complete by Wednesday, Feb. 4th.
-Emory: They have given out all invites for now, but there might be a second round.
Check back around 2/10.
-Duke: done inviting people 🙁

All clinical PhD programs. So there still might be some hope! (there has to be!)

Some programs only accept students into their PhD program that have completed the M.A. at the school first. I'm at an APA accredited school right now finishing up my M.A. and going for my PhD. In order to apply to the PhD you have to have a 3.5 up to this point, and be enrolled in their M.A. program so the application pool ends up being about 35 (instead of 400) people and 14-16 get in. I still applied to other schools and its still a nerve racking process especially because I know who my competition is, but something to consider as a M.A. to PhD

Duh. I just got a call from an unknown number, and they didn't leave a message.

I wonder who it was? Schools don't usually call and not leave voicemails, do they?

Reading this MA discussion has got me thinking that maybe I should look into that option a bit just in case. Is it too late for applications now?

Not at all in terms of the application... it is just about getting your recommendations, scores, and transcripts etc. I know some have a February 15th deadline and some have March 1st.

What phone number have you all been calling to get in touch with florida? Every time I call I get the same voice mail message

Psh. DO IT! The secretary doesn't have to know your name. Take one for the team!

I'm going to put in a plug here for a master's program at Western Carolina University. I don't believe that their deadline has passed and they are an excellent program to consider for a backup plan. They only accept 5-7 students so there's a much better chance of getting some fantastic financial aid. Also, they have a good track record of getting students into top programs. I would recommend checking them out if you're looking for some master's programs to apply to.

Just received a call from the clinical program assistant inviting me to interview at Northwestern on March 13!!

AWESOME, congrats! Could you PM me your POI?

Also, what number did they call from, could you tell on your phone it was them?

I'm happy for you! But I'm also crying a little inside.

some good news in this time of depression for me...just got word that my research was accepted for APA in Toronto! Just wish it was accepted in time to add it to my CV! ughhhhhh

I'm finishing up my masters now. It seems like many programs are similar, but its mostly what you make out of it. Grades aren't really an issue, but it's important to find the best internships you can, the best research opportunities, etc.

But I think what is of the utmost importance (at least in my opinion) is to do a 60 credit hours masters. Yes, it's a year longer than a general psych masters BUT, you'll be eligible for licensure after classes end. You'll need a certain number of hours of supervision after, but all your class requirements will be filled. If you are licensed, you will be paid more and its easier to get jobs. You can do fee-for-service during a PhD program and make more money. Also, you'll be able to get better internship placements because the placements will be able to bill more for you so you're a much more desireable candidate than someone who has to practice under another's license.

I don't know if that post was legible or not (its been a long day) but I'd recommend a 60 hour program, in a location where you have a lot of internship opportunities. I'm in Boston and there are a couple here that are great. Anyway, just some food for thought. Good luck!

In hopes of diverting myself, I just went to the library to pick up a few books and ordered two Bollywood movies on Amazon, so hopefully I'll won't be obsessively checking this thread as much. 😉

Well, if you still have applications outstanding, you could email your professor(s) of interest and let them know. Seems like a fairly legitimate way of staying in touch. Just be polite and try not to come across (unduly) brag-y.

I've had one paper accepted for publication and two more submitted since submitting my application. I emailed the preprint and my updated CV to all my POIs and a few responded congratulating me, and thanking me for sending on the information. Definitely does not hurt.

I heard it in undergrad from people directly involved in the application process there. Probably depends on the school.

I got one too!!!!! Only school to ask for an interview invite, but who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woo hooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine is 2/20 as well 🙂

I just stumbled across this website and while it is nice to know that most schools have already made their decisions, it is hard to digest that I have yet to recieve any interview offers. Guess I need to start working on plan B.

Anyways, has anyone heard anything about URI or St. Louis Univ.?

Also, I know that GSU's clinical dept. has already made their decision but since I applied to the joint clinical/community program do any of you think that my date may be different?

10 of my 12 schools have already made their decisions so I am starting to feel S*** out of luck...🙁

Within the last 5 letters. Sorry to bring bad news to anyone but I wouldn't totally give up hope just yet. I wasn't the one who talked with the secretary, I dont know exactly how they're doing it.

I'm clinical specialty not clinical health

RejectClinical: Congrats! I'm so happy for you 😀 I only have one invite so far too, but it only takes one, right? Also, it's nice to know that you're in the top pool of applicants somewhere.

Just called Boston University and they said they'll be done handing out invites by the end of the day tomorrow

I keep telling myself it only takes one, but it's SO MUCH PRESSURE for that one! Gotta make it count.

Oh gosh, okay I know it's only 2:30 but this is killin' me. I feel like the little hallmark guy in that card that was posted on here. I'm going to go try to sit through a 1.5 hr class and not jump out of my chair with anxious anticipation! Would the three who have been invited to interview at UMSL mind letting me know your POIs via PM? thanks, and super congrats!

Maybe that's a good thing though...we'll be more motivated and more focused on the one school which may give us an edge over people with several interviews who may give less effort for their second or third choices...Just a thought 🙂

Would it also be possible for me to jump in on that request? I would really appreciate it!

my co-worked called them earlier today and they told her that they haven't started extending invites yet but it will be "sooooon".
