I just spoke with one of the people in the grad admissions office and apparently not all of their invites have been sent out yet. She said the remaining invites should be going out this week and/or next week. 🙂

Just wandering if anybody is familiar with the admission process at Berkeley clinical track. I'm trying to guess whether they are done sending interview invites or not. Any info much appreciated. Thanks!

This is not really information, just the sense of things I got: it seemed a priori like they planned to be very coordinated about how they extended invitations; I basically assumed that if I didn't get one in the first wave I wouldn't get one at all. I did get one, and it came nearly simultaneously with when NCSunshine posted that he or she just got an invitation; maybe the delivery of the emails was even scheduled to be simultaneous. But probably best just to write/call and ask.

The Clinical Science assistant just called me with info about the interview weekend. Around 290 people applied, and they are definitely inviting 15 to interview. They are 2 people they are still trying to decide about, so they may actually invite 17.

I completely agree with what was said by the others. In fact I have noticed that many people that are getting interviews (including myself) are applying for the second year and that many schools think it is good to reapply because it shows how committed you are to the degree. Also, you can get more experience in a year, realize how to "sell" yourself better, and may find that you can become even more dedicated to the process (if that even seems possible). But give yourself some down time. I didn't even consider reapplying for a few months and just tried to forget the whole experience 🙂 Good luck everyone!

Definitely. And keep in mind that this is maybe the most competitive year ever to get in because of a combination of: 1) the economic depression means less money available for the program and fewer slots as a result, 2) there are more applicants due to the slow economy (people trying to ride it out in school) plus historical trends indicating an increase in the number of clinical applicants every year anyway across the board.

So a rejection is normal and by no means a reflection of your ability or your standing relative to the rest of students. - For the most part, only the cream of the crop apply to a PhD program, and you're one of those. Even getting an invite to many places should be considered an achievement. Actually getting in = a combo of luck, fit, and interview ability.

But most all of us are perfectionists, overachievers and not used to failure/rejection EVER in our academic pursuits, much less a whole string of them. So it's going to hurt regardless.

Well this sucks- before, the website said interviewees would be notified Feb 1st. Now it says: "2009: UNC will hold its Interview Day on Friday February 20, 2009. All applicants invited for an interview have been notified."

Where did you see this? I checked the website, and it still says:

2009: UNC will hold its Interview Day on Friday February 20, 2009. All applicants invited for an interview will be notified on February 1.

under "Application Process" (http://www.unc.edu/depts/clinpsy/program/applying.html)

Has anyone heard from UVA-Curry or spoken with the department coordinator regarding timing for interview invitations? I know a couple people have mentioned UVA interviews, but not sure if it is the Department of Psychology or Department of Education (Curry). Any information would be greatly appriciated. Thank you!

I received an interview invite today. It was an email 'signed' by my POI, but actually sent by the Associate Director of Psychology Admission (it was from his email address).

Last name starts with P. I am sure they are still inviting people.

I think they are inviting people in a random order. I got an invite Monday for the same date as Smeevil, and my last name starts with a B.

I have a good friend at the program and he said they're definitely all over the place and likely not even done inviting yet. So don't worry! 🙂

My sentiments exactly. Sigh.

Honestly I feel ridiculous for coming into this whole process thinking I had a decent chance of getting into a program. I think it's finally sunk in that it's slim to none at this point. I will no go indulge in comfort food and bad reality television (they help me see that it could always be worse! haha).

Ugh, I know how you feel!!! I am currently making an ice cream sundae for myself and watching American Idol!

Has anyone had their POI send them copies of their grants and recent publications to review prior to the interview? And if so, what do you think they will be looking for regarding these materials?

Anyone know if Rutgers PhD is done sending out invites? Bah.

I just called Fordham today and spoke with the secretary and she said that they are still in the process of contacting people about interviews. Some people have posted here that they are done with their invites. Do you guys think that she was just saying that to get me off their back until rejection letters come out, or is it true?

Maybe there is still some hope!

Hello all!

I'm confused with LaSalle University PsyD - it is on the master list of schools that have sent out invites, however, their webpage says that the deadline is February 15th... Is the website wrong? I just assumed it would be right. But if they are already giving out invites....I guess the deadline has passed, right?

I got and interview invite to LaSalle, but the interview deadline is February 15, you're right. I guess they're reviewing them as they come in?

One of my POIs did, and I'm just assuming they'll expect you to have read them and have some comments/opinions/ideas. I read them over a few times, read some of the articles they cited, and came up with a list of questions to ask about the studies, and also some ideas about how I could contribute/do work in the lab that addresses some of the issues/research questions meriting more study that thier study brought to mind (and matches what I said I wanted to do in my personal statement)...you can't prepare too much, can you?

I received an "open house" interview invite today as well, for Friday March 6th.

This is my first experience applying to grad programs and I'm glad I found this site...so many great supportive, helpful people here!

Good luck everyone.

Agreed. Preparation is key. I am just worried that they might expect a well formulated research proposal based on the grants already in place or if they want more general thoughts/research ideas.

BTW can't deal with the wait ANY LONGER!!!!!!!!

Just got an email invite from the admissions coordinator at CUNY PhD for an interview to be set up with a faculty member and student.

Edit: this is clinical psych at the Grad Center

Whenever I have a bad day, for some reason this makes me feel better instantly: http://www.hallmark.com/webapp/wcs/...ategories=27&sortBySelect=&categoryId=-102262

I know a lot of people are frustrated right now, so hopefully this will help.

A note to anyone who has taken less than 2 years off: Do not stress if you aren't doing as well as you wanted! Taking at least 2 years off is generally a good idea, for your sanity as well as your experience and maturity. My research interests have even become more defined as I've worked for the past 2 years. It's amazing when you think back and see how far you've come. For those of you still in undergrad, taking the time off is AMAZING! It's so nice to come home and not have homework for the first time since you were in preschool. 🙂

For those of you who have taken 2 years off or more: I hear you. This is very stressful. For me, I keep thinking that if I don't get in this time, what more can I do to make myself a "better" candidate? More than 2 years experience isn't much different than 2 years...

I got this too. I am confused. Do we contact both the faculty member and student?

I dont think they expect an entire research proposal...I mean, you're here to learn, right? I do plan however to have specific ideas for research that we could possibly consider. How much more can they expect than that? But hey, don't take my word for it, my guess is as good as yours.

You absolutely do not need to go in with a research proposal, nevertheless a well formulated one! In fact, it takes 1-2 years of training (minimum) to even learn what a well formulated research proposal is supposed to look like!

Yes, you should have some definite ideas of things you might like to do given the POI's research interests. Find things about their research that are particularly interesting to you, ask them questions about it, show interest and some knowledge (read the recent pubs). If you happen to already have specific areas you'd like to study, that's great. If not, come up with some interesting ideas, and tie in how your previous experience has set a good foundation for what you want to do in the future. In most cases they are looking for research interests & aptitude, interpersonal skills, and experiences that are appropriate given your developmental level. You want to have some research ideas but also show some flexibility (because some POIs may have pre-determined plans for the students). Definitely no full on proposals.

I was just checking one of my program's websites, and it said to list two faculty members I'd like to work with in my SOP! I only listed one because tbh only one's work really interested me. Do you think that will hurt my chances?

hey...did this appear to be a mass email (i.e. do you think they are done with invites)?

hey guys, I'm not familiar with these schools so I just wanted to check if there's more than one campus. We already have a CUNY Queen's College on the list. Is this the same? If not, how should I list it????

CUNY Queen's is for Neuropsychology. CUNY Graduate Center is for the Clinical Psychology Ph.D.

Sorry for the confusion!

Can I complain for a minute? A lot of people from my high school class are applying to law school. They already know of their acceptances and are complaining that they only got into their backups, not their top choices.

It makes me want to cry. We don't even HAVE backups!

No it was at least partially personalized because the faculty and student with whom you interview is specific to you. Actually, they made a mistake the first time I guess and gave me the wrong two people to contact, so I got a second email with the new set. My guess is they aren't done, but I have no idea.

YES I CANNOT AGREE MORE
I have friends that did not even do competitively well on their LSAT getting into top 25 schools....I aced my GRE and have a great GPA yet I can't even get an interview call back....the only positive is is that we won't have careers that suck in 7 years.

I am ready to go anywhere...I used to have my programs ranked and now I just do not care....whoever will take me is where I def. want to be

what?!? that's crazy!! all this week i've been hearing they're done, they're done. i didn't want to call again because i just called last week... but maybe i will try emailing tomorrow. wtf!!

I didn't apply to anywhere I wouldn't want to go, but I do have two or three "top choices."

Glad that you feel my pain, though!

I received this via email on 1/28 at night: "We are very pleased to invite you to come for an interview! We are holding our interviews on Visiting Day, Monday February 16. We hope you can come! "

Well, how's this for frustration: I was telling someone about how competitive this process is and how schools will only take in a class of anywhere from 3-8 (average). I think pretty much all of my schools only traditionally take about 6. Well, this person looked at me and said I was probably mistaken and that it is not that hard to get in to grad school . "A class of 6 is not even a class now, is it?" - he said. 😕

I know I've been going through the same thing so I'm not sure what to believe. Let me know what you your hear

Buh? Well it appears the guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Ignore that downer of a "friend" and keep your chin up 🙂

Hey! Just spoke with a super sweet woman at UFlorida. She said that invites are NOT done going out. They are individual e-mails, and she is sending them out in alphabetical order. She hopes to get the rest out today, but she has to leave early, so they may still be sending them out tomorrow. However, she also said that there was a slight possibility that a few more would not be sent out until the 2nd. So basically, we just have to cross our fingers until Mon.! And I wouldn't bother calling to have her check your status, she doesn't seem to be doing that. If you receive something, please update immediately! And include your last initial so we know where they are in the stack! Good luck! :xf:

Anyone apply to any Masters programs as backup?

ps my horoscope today says:

"Relax and talk yourself out of seeing only the dark side of things"

I thought we could all take that advice- I know I have been feeling super negative about this whole process lately....
