Official 2014-2015 GI Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Relax guys. Imagine you are a PD with a full clinical workload. You now have to review ~400 applications and pick the 40 you want to interview. This is not like IM residency where you can cattle call in hundreds of people.

This is a lot of work and takes time.

good call 🙂

Is the California PTAL letter required for fellowship application / interview or at the time to rank order link submission ?
I have received mixed responses from different people

generic email from Medical College of Georgia saying PD is reviewing applications and request either the MSPE, USMLE, transcript or the required 4 LORs

For you guys that already got some IVs... are you
americans/US citizens/green card holders or IMGs needing visa sponsorship?

Gastromatch, very good point!
Here's what I think : For competitive fellowship like GI, candidates are selected ("filtered" if you will) in following order:

1. Americans ( I know at least 10 people with only 1 poster presentation or no research, without board certified in IM, some of them even don't have step 3 done) - and not much offense as they pay $$$ of loans here.
2. US citizens and greencard holders with good ties, some research, good letters (not big difference)
3. Pending greencards
4. J1 visa
5. H1 visa

So, I would assume, people who got invites may fall in category "1" or "2" from above.

I am still waiting though, just like most of us!

Good luck to all.

You mean US grads and not US citizens mainly. I am an IMG but if I was a PD, I would definitely still favor an American grad ANY DAY instead of an IMG. These guys paid taxes, got hundreds of thousands of loans, are familiar with the system, and have worked as hard so I think it is fair enough. If you are an IMG, you need to stand out of the crowd, be a hard-worker, do a LOT of valuable research (original research not case reports), and of course be a super-resident.

Do you guys know if there is a ranking of gi fellowships. I see the US news rankings but I think a lot of big players are notably missing in that. Is there a better resource?

which is more reputable: Mayo Rochester vs. UWash vs. Duke?

Yes, I think im4ever has the best interviews so far.

I think Mayo Rochester has the best reputation but I could be mistaken

It is showing date in black and not purple, likely they have not downloaded yet.

@adagio: UWash is strong overall, not sure how strong it is but definitely one of the top ones on the west coast. I love the location though.

If you check the status of your app from ADTS and it's still in black, it does not mean the programs did not download your app. All 3 of the programs I got interviews so far are still in black on ADTS.

Look like a quiet day today.

@Hepatastic : The city is a great city for sure. needles too say, Udub has astounding and prestigious reputation in medicine overall, so will not be surprised if their GI/Liver program is superb as well. Congratulations, seems your credentials are stellar. Let's hope they have not sent all interviews yet 🙂

@Hepatastic I have received Mayo Jacksonville too. what do you think about it from what you've heard?

Hello, I am new to this forum. Good luck to everyone!
I have 2 interviews thus far and 0 rejections:
-Mayo Jacksonville
-Cincinnati
I am an IMG, US Citizen, 12 papers, 10 abstracts, usmle1,2,3: 241/265/221 no failed attempts, and currently a third year resident at a reputable residency program. Please share your creds especially those with interviews to understand what our chances are in general!

New to this forum as well.
-3 interviews and one supplemental app (Hopkins) so far:
--Duke (7/21)
--Mayo Rochester (7/30)
--Wake Forest (7/24)

-Are you guys quick at scheduling the interviews once you get invites? Since they are so sporadic right now, I guess it's better to go ahead and schedule and cancel later if you end up having too many?

adagio: for Mayo clinic (Jacksonville) I dont know much about it except their liver program is good. Thanks for your kind words. I am an mediocre applicant, just hoping to match somewhere. Good luck to your interviews. Maybe I will see you in Jacksonville!

Is there a deadline for match registration? I do not see that on the web page. As I have not yet received any interviews, should I register now or once I get interviews. Please advice. Thanks.

Rejection Methodist Dallas today. No IVs so far. Congrats all of you who already started getting IVs.
