Official 2014-2015 Pulm/CCM Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My home institution does not have a fellowship program, otherwise I would.
I guess it wouldn't hurt to try 1-2 places that are bottom of your list, but maybe wait a couple more days...no? About 10-15% programs have sent out any invites, and hopefully, even they send out invites in rounds. Maybe some of the current fellows have some advice.

Thanks, maybe I'll wait it out until Monday. The silence is deafening.

Yah man I wouldn't email. They got the app.

I would just ask my pd or letter writers next week to send an email each to one of ur programs u think I've got a good shot at or really want to go.

It's easy enough and it's worked in the past for people I know to get an interview. It's more effective than bugging the secretaries or writing ur own email to the pd.

Hey what have you "heard" or know about Indiana? I've heard "good clinically" but otherwise, nothing else...

I love hearsay...
Yeah, that's about all I know too - "good clinically" (and I'm guessing you'd have to be if your program serves 4 different hospitals), looks like they have the opportunity for an intergrated 2 year Master's in Clinical Research which interests me, but when I look under actual research, looks like slim pickins.. haven't pubmed'ed the fellows yet.. 😛

Heard from Tufts (already on the list). Whats the gossip/hearsay? Again I am looking for quality clinical training, don't care a ton about research.

Any ideas on the ratio of people interviewed/spots for typical pulm fellowship programs? For my residency program the ratio was about 7/1, and the director of the GI fellowship at my hospital said that their numbers are similar to that (she was on Gen Med wards with me... didn't feel comfortable asking Pulm/CC program director out of the blue). Any ideas on the typical number of people per interview date? Seems like there is a big spread of number of interview dates offered (I've seen as low as 3 and as many as 9) which doesn't seem to correlate with reputation of program (better programs seem to have more than less great ones).

For the handful of programs for which I know solid numbers, I think the ratio is around 6-10:1. 4-6 fellows and interview around 40-60 people. I imagine there is a pretty wide spread!

In general, is it better to interview early on in August or late september or October? Pros and cons?

A wise man posted in the Cards thread... thought I'd share...

Trying to chillout but easier said than done. IV=0 On the bright side, rejection =2 only so far. Nice proverb though

Agreed, and experiencing how destructive anxiety can be. can NOT for the life of me concentrate on board prep...

Hi All,

Just joined the forums. An IMG from average university program in mid-west. Got 3 IVs so far from Ucinn, Loyola and U of K. No rejections.
Any ideas about how good these programs are?

Thanks a lot

Btw. I got a couple of interviews from really small programs with 1-2 fellows (they are already on the master list of invitations) and prior fellows are mainly from their own residency programs. Is it a waste of time/money going for those interviews? Or is there a chance if their own residents match at "better" places? My concern is that they may just invite outsiders as an alibi while they actually only match their own people.

I think you can never tell for sure. IMO, If it is really a small program, chances are definitely high that if their own fellows have the slightest incentive to stay put (family/house/nothing on the CV) and they don't really care about research and just need the manpower, they'll pick them over an outsider any day as opposed to bigger name programs where it would be weird to fill all your 4-5 slots with your own residents.

What's the scoop on uni of Chicago vs. Loyola?

Loyola seems like they have more to offer in terms of clinical training? Transplant, the va, etc.

But u of c is more research heavy. Anyone with more to add?

Chicago v. Loyola.

You are correct, Loyola is a strong program clinically. Growing transplant program, and VA. However Chicago has more research opportunities.
At least for internal medicine residencies U of Chicago is generally considered more competative.

+ Texas A&M, SLU and Carilion Clinic (Virginia) all today. So excited!

Agree with what has been stated. Loyola is going to be a much more clinical orientated experience and UChicago will be more research.

I applied early this week ( late )?. Img community hospital. h1b visa. Ok to change to j1.
Usmle triple 99. 245-258-240. 2 poster presentation. Resident and teacher of year twice. 4 strong lor's. Strong mspe from the dean .
I don't know what is my chance. Any answer.

For the third time - Arizona sent a reminder that they are still reviewing applications. Geisinger wants more information about the research I am interested in and also why I want to stay in the area,

Yeah, the third Arizona email stating that they are still reviewing applications is super annoying. I'm definitely not "liking" them on Facebook like they requested.

lol liking them on facebook is like trapping yourself.

Gaaaaaahhhhhh......It's August 8th!! C'mon people send some more interviews. I'm having auditory hallucinations of my phone's incoming e-mail buzz. :sour:

Is everybody that applied getting the Geisenger Questionnaire or just potential hopefuls? I got mine today and their questions seem like a real nuisance

+Brigham. Appears that they anticipate getting board certification back this fall.

Also I've been hammer emailing one attending who still hasn't gotten back to me said he's working on a letter but it's not uploaded yet, how much longer should I let the madness go on?

Hey CodenameDuchess, just heard from them too. Sorry I'm naive...what's the deal with board certification?

When they split off of mgh/bi I think they lost some of their numbers (probably bronchs or something) to qualify to sit for the boards. Used to be mgh/bi/Brigham all together for one fellowship. Probably just needed to restructure their program after the breakup, I'm not that worried about it but it will be interesting to see what their clinical exposure is like because we all know the research exposure will be quality.

I got the same email. I don't think it was a mass email that was sent. Could be wrong....

I hear they are ramping up their presence at the local VA hospital, which was previously fairly understaffed from a pulmonary standpoint (including in their ICUs). Maybe that's where the extra procedures and clinic time will come from? The clinical spectrum at the VA should be a nice complement to the tertiary/quaternary stuff and heavy onc focus at the Brigham proper.
