Official 2014 Step 1 Experiences and Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks. I plan to take a few days and work my way back into it. But, I like most of us will push myself because I want to be ready to take this thing.

Don't kill yourself over it. If I'd studied either more or less intensely over my ~6 week study period, I doubt it would have made a lick of difference.

Dude I'd just plug in papi goljan and coastttttt until you pick things back up with the books again haha! Speedy recovery man!

Ok stupid qs prob but can someone please post the website where we check scores? I took mine june 11. Is it the same site that says "check exam status" on the side? I heard that we're supposed to get a email telling us when the scores will be ready. Haven't gotten such an email.

Yes, a link to the score report will show up in the "Score Report Date" column on the "Check exam status" page. It says it in the yellow box right there at the top of the page for me.

Hey guys, my exam is Aug 30th...been very stressed since i recently started studying! I had achilles surgery about a month and a half ago, still not up to speed obviously lol but I'm starting to really buckle down now. My question for those of you who recently took the exam, is the subject content on your exams similar to what you've heard before? For example, is pharm and path still almost half the exam, the 2 most highest yield subjects? I heard physio is much less on it now, but it's still something that needs to be known so you can solve some path problems?

Another questions I had was the amount of "low-yield" subjects on the exam now. I've heard recently that people have had about 30 questions of biochemistry, and also a little more anatomy than usual (about 15-20 questions). Did you all feel this is true for your exams?

Overall, I've heard that the exam has truly changed this spring/summer. I've heard NUMEROUS people telling me that they thought it was ridiculously difficult, definitely more so than they've heard from past test-takers. My study strategy is the following:

- Pathoma (already completed), also listening to Goljan audio while in the car or while running/walking just to keep my brain thinking of this stuff (kinda helps to be honest!).
- First Aid - I'm using Pharm straight out of first aid, and using Uworld to supplement whatever isn't in FA.
- First aid Plus UWORLD - I'm using First aid with Uworld to go over each subject. The only subjects I've used exterior books is Pathoma and BRS Physiology. Both were highly recommended. Also I gave kaplan behavioral sciences a read, and will read over it probably 2x more (easy read..i liked it).
- NBMEs - I'll take at least 5 NBME's in this time..along with completing Uworld 2x (once for notes, second to test my knowledge and be able to EXPLAIN what answers are on each question), along with Uworld SA 1 and 2.

Do you guys suggest I should spend extra time on things like anatomy and behavioral and neuroscience? From what I've heard regarding anatomy is that I should stick to the nerves and blood supply, esp upper and lower limbs. Or just in general MSK section in FA is good. Neuro anatomy I've heard is about half of the anatomy questions lol so I guess neuroscience is something that should be stressed a bit more regarding anatomy in general?

Anyways, I apologize for the long post. I'm new to this forum, but have tried looking at recent test takers experience about the subject breakdown that they have had. I was honestly hoping my exam would be a crazy amount of microbiology :/ Since that seems to be my best subject lol I'm doing well in path also, uworld really hammered home high yield details that i was able to write into FA, along with the great pathoma! Pharm is kinda weak :/ I feel like it's a lot of just memorization, and here and there it's conceptual.

I'll appreciate any and all advice/responses! Best of luck to all of you waiting for your results, I reallyyy hope all of you do great!

For me (hardest to easiest):

Step 1 >> UWorld QBank > UWSA ~ NBMEs.

(UWorld QBank was significantly easier the second time around, but the second pass isn't really relevant.)

That's a good thing. I always tell my students they should hope to get a hard exam. You get a high score when you get questions right that others get wrong. So in other words, it's good that you don't feel it was easy. The best case scenario is you walk out feeling like it was really tough, but that you still think you got most of the questions right. Getting an easy exam is a double-edged sword.

@Phloston - what do you mean by it's good that you don't feel it was easy? Wouldn't feeling like it was difficult increase the likelihood I got difficult questions wrong?

@thehundredthone

or more likely you're the one getting these questions wrong while others are getting them right. lol

It's going to be brutal. I'm in surgery so hopefully it will go by fast but I know all I'm going to be able to think about is checking it.

Go to the Nbme licensing website. Click on check exam status and under the permit available date; if your blue hyperlink for print permit is still there, then you most likely won't be receiving your score tomorrow. Hope this helps.

Still there, guess a no go for tomorrow.

I knew you were going to do that.

I'm not sure about the subjective easiness/difficulty of your Step 1. I think hoping to get a hard exam is for those who find that the trickier question sets help them perform better (because there are some that don't do well under that sort of pressure). But if you're scoring 270s on your NBMEs and/or finding them easy, it's time to panic and take the test the very next day.

Anyone know what time to expect scores? Hopefully I can sneak away and take a peek. Tried going through old threads to guesstimate but old posts no longer show a time stamp.

are people taking time off from clerkship to check their scores lol? I really don't want to go in tomorrow.

We don't have patients tomorrow morning so I'll most likely still be at home when we get the email (if a previous post was correct in that the email goes out around 11/noon). I'm still not sure if I want to check before going to clinic in the afternoon, just in case I'll be a mess 🙁

Does anyone know if it's coming out at 11 am EST or at noon EST?

Is anyone able to reapply for a step 1 permit. I was not able to do this yesterday but am now able to do it today? Does this mean I failed?!?!?! freaking out!

Hey! Found this site so helpful (thanks!) so I wanted to share my experience as its a little different than some others.

I used DIT, Uworld (1 pass) and pathoma. I never made it completely through First aid (about half). Study time = 6 weeks.

7 days in: NBME7 = 220
20 days in: NBME15= 230
34 days in: NBME 16 = 239

Step 1: 243

My test felt like an NBME, but had odd anatomy questions. It was really OB/GYN, Renal and pharm heavy, micro coming in at a close 4th. Good luck to everyone else getting their scores today!

Edit: Test date June 17th

congrats on the score!! Did you get your score today?

my school posted scores: took on July 17, 2014. score: 244. practice scores: 220 nbme practice test, 230'sh (official), 247 nbme practice test

Crap I'm able to reapply as well. Congrats to all who passed already. Could any of you perhaps check and see of you are able to reapply also. Terrified right now.

Got my score, and it was a 246. Took the test on June 6th.

Used UWorld, FA (x2), and Pathoma (x2) as my study resources. Uworld % was 73% after first pass.

Practice test scores: 230 (NBME 13), 252 (NBME 15), 256 (NBME 16), and 258 (UWSA 2).

I was hoping for a higher score, based on my practice tests. However, 246 is still good enough to keep me in the running for any specialty so I am trying not to kick myself too hard.

Good luck to everyone else who will receive their score today.
