Not really. There is some luck in this process, but for the most part you are in control of your application essays, which I think (complete personal opinion) is what would make a difference for people with our stat ranges.

Well you are in full control of your application essays. There are factors outside of essays that you arent in control of though.

If my years in music has taught me anything, it's that you have to control for everything you can possibly control, but even that doesn't mean things will work out in your favor. From a decision-making perspective, there is logic behind all their decisions (which is why from their perspective, it's not a crapshoot or random), but even adcoms have minimal control over which file, above all others that they have on their desk, will be read first. Plus, anything with a human touch to it will always be privy to certain biases (in the positive or negative) and randomness.
Doesn't mean the entire process is a crapshoot though, just that we also definitely need a good dose of luck on our side too 🙂
Such as what? Being ORM/URM is what comes to mind here. That one can really suck... unless you are URM.

Because there are many applicants who have identical stats, the rest of the app come into play. It';s not a matter of luck, it's who has the app that is better, who has fewer mistakes, and who has more to add to the Class. As LizzyM has noted, this is very hard to determine, and that's why schools that screen will have multiple screeners and an Adcom meeting to determine who gets the invite.

In the country I was born medical school admissions is solely based on an MCAT like test. No ECs, no GPA, no essays, just the test. This makes the process very straightforward: you either have the score, or you don't. On the other hand, there are no evaluations of if you would make a good doctor personality-wise, and if you are a bad standardized test taker say goodbye to medical school.
I'm glad the process is the way it is here in the US. It gives opportunities for everyone that can work hard even if you are not a super star

I would never get into medical school in that said country because quite frankly I'm not that great at standardized tests. (only made a upper 20 score on the MCAT)

Wow 8 schools... I wish you the best of luck! Did you apply to DO schools as well? What is your MD list?
Not yet, I am waiting towards the end of September for an II and then I'll start with DO schools. All NY state schools (except Stony Brook) + Einstein, Jefferson, Rochester, and NYMC. Most likely will add Rosalind, University of Penn, and Temple.
Well, technically I'm at 65-70 due to multiple MCATs,so really my LizzyM is ~67 if I average my MCATs
For good luck maybe..26 MD schools...1 rejection...no II's. Waiting on one secondary. May add 3 more schools this week just for kicks..First time MCAT 2014 was a 31..retake 513 Aug 2015..Undergrad GPA 3.4...Masters GPA 3.95. So I honestly dont know how this will all average out into a Lizzy score. Average EC's...hoping for some MD love. Not URM

Why not Stony Brook?
Posting here for good luck... Applied to about 10 MD schools (some were very idiotic choices, as I did not research their large IS bias...), rejected at 2 (ETSU and EVMS), II at 2 (IS schools, still waiting to hear back from the third IS school). First interview is in two days, the other one is mid October. Best of luck to all those who are applying this cycle! We can do this!!!
Guys have you checked out Wedgedawg's Applicant Rating System Scale? Provides some interesting insight if your EC's/Personal Experiences outshine your LizzyM score. Something to check out if you start getting antsy about the whole process.
The only knock I have on this system is the number of schools it recommends for applicants of each level. I think the suggested number of schools is more than it should be for most applicants.
Yea I used Wedge dawg's applicant rating system and MSAR to create my school list for primaries. I think it represents a much more accurate picture of the applicant than the Lizzy M score.
Anyways I applied to 21 MD schools and was complete late august to early sept for my secondaries and complete silence other than status updates that say my file is under review. Lizzy M ~ 69. Just posting for good luck! 🙂
Stony Brook requires genetics as a prereq prior to matriculation. Being that I went to a university that had a heavy emphasis on diversity (minority studies, art, music....) and required two elective upper chemistry courses for my major, I did not have the opportunity to take genetics.
Probably something super special on application or URM.
Am Latino but I seriously hope that this isn't the only reason. Affirmative action is bull****.
During that one year of lab research, did you happen to cure Cancer and/or HIV?
Honestly, it probably is more likely than the poster having done something super special. Of course I totally could be wrong, and they could have opened a giant not-for profit charity or something too. That will get you an II at schools like that even with a 67 LizzyM.
I can't imagine schools going "URM? Yes, invite him/her ASAP" without taking into account the rest of the applicants' application materials. That's just... wrong.
I doubt it'll change anytime soon, but I'm really sick of the SDN knee-jerk reaction of "Must be URM" when someone with lower stats get IIs from schools like Duke, Harvard, Stanford, Hopkins, etc. Or any school in general. I finally posted my MDApps link on here a couple of days ago, and within an hour of me doing that I got PMs asking me if I'm URM after "congratulating" me on a particular II I received.

I agree 100% @CellPowerhouse ...though I am guilty as well for thinking "Damn, how in the hell..must be a URM" sometimes too; regardless of why or how, these posters are being given great opportunities, and I wish the best for everyone this cycle!
But it goes without saying it takes more than URM status to crack even a II at a school like Duke--context clues folks!

What is this College Quidditch thing about?
Did you attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry?
I applied there, but didnt get a secondary. They said I was too muggleborn.
