It's a sport the athletic nerds are playing nowadays - an oxymoron, but yes, we exist. I was gonna go to Hogwarts but they didn't accept my FAFSA, unfortunately.

I am getting to the point of not anonymous at all, based on my posts and my MDApps, but I'll bite... I didn't go to Geneseo, but I did play against their team (they're really good) many times.

I have a friend at Duke. He's your average suburban middle class straight white male. He had a 31 MCAT. he never told me his GPA and I never cared to ask so, I can't speak to that aside from knowing how he did in classes we took together. I highly doubt he had a 4.0 but I'd imagine it was something like a 3.6-3.7


Anyhow, my point is that some ORMs get IIs to top schools w/ not-so top numbers. It is honestly so frustrating to see that URM accomplishments are always held under the microscope and belittled with an obligatory "it's because he's URM" comment. There are ORMs with lower stats that get a shot, too.

thank you!!!!! and you're so right; i also don't want this thread to turn ugly. it's a really positive and supportive thread and i hope we can all keep those optimistic vibes to help each other get through a stressful time. and YES! any time one of us get an II, we should smile and realize that there is hope 🙂

Fun Hypothetical scenario time in order to ward off the stresses of this application process.


If you could choose to go to Harvard Med School or Hogwarts (Assuming Hogwarts was just like Hogwarts from the books), which one would you go to?

Oh man, that's tough.

If you asked 11-year-old me (the one who stayed up til midnight the eve of his birthday to wait for his Hogwarts letter, no joke), he'd say Hogwarts of course. Right now though I'm gonna have to go with HMS.

(For the record I still want to be a wizard but I just don't want to jinx my chances at HMS right now haha)

Lies! I am not in same boat as everyone else; my mother and I both agree that I am better than every other applicant out there. I like to think that I haven't heard back from any of the schools yet because they are having a battle royal over me. 🙂

You know what, I totally forgot you had an II at Harvard when I made that post.

I would probably still choose Hogwarts though because healing magic would allow me to still treat patient's better than being a "muggle" doctor could.

Plus at that point for your diversity essay you could just put.

Haha, sometimes I forget I have an II there too. It still feels very unreal.

But if you already went to Hogwarts, would you still want to be a Muggle doctor?

Like I said, a **** ton of volunteer/shadow experience. 1 year of research (though I did write that I wish I had found the lab earlier because I really enjoyed my time with them, not sure how much they cared about that.) TBH I couldn't tell you what would stand out on my application though my hobbies listed are rather unorthodox. sGPA is a 3.77, 31 MCAT. I guess I wrote some pretty bomb ass essays.

Try not to be too bummed about Georgetown! Based on the people I know who have been rejected from there, I can't really figure out what it is they're looking for. They've all been well within the range of accepted scores and have tons of community involvement, both medical and non-medical. Anyway, I know it doesn't help much to say "don't feel bad about it," but really I don't think a rejection from Georgetown says anything bad about your candidacy!

Gandy. We are applying to a lot of the same schools, so I feel like I know you a bit. I've seen a lot of you speculating as to why other people are getting interviews while you are not getting the attention you want/may have expected from some of your top choices. That mindset will only lead you down a dark road. Trust me man, this is not my first application cycle, and I spent the majority of last year doing the same thing. So what if some guy had a billion service hours and got an interview because of it? Your application is submitted and your past is set in stone. Try to focus on what YOU can do to make your future match your goals and your potential. You have an acceptance to medical school. If you want, you will be participating in a white coat ceremony next year. Please let that give you the confidence you have already put the work in to earn. The cycle is still young, so you can and should hope for more, but you are in a great position.

The value of this thread is to put people in similar academic circumstances in a place where they can encourage each other and believe that this aspect of their application may not be the roadblock to medical school they may have perceived it to be. It is awesome and is the only thread that I still read. All the others I just skim for "II" to see if a fresh batch came out.

I completely agree. Im totally guilty of it, but it just seems as though this process has no rhyme or reason...so just go along with it and hope for the best! They come when you decide you're done for anyway 😛

I would do the hand-waving and create justifications for why they were chosen and not me without addressing my core problems.

But you know what gave me the most peace and self-empowerment over this past year? Realizing that I could attain whatever I used as a justification for other people having better applications than me. "They have a ton of volunteering hours, that's why they were chosen." Well, why don't I have those too? No reason? Ok, time to go get them!

"These people have more interesting hobbies/experiences..." Well, I guess it's time to get out there and try new things. This realization is what got me into Powerlifting and in general has improved my life A TON. Now I feel like a more diversified person beyond my interest in medicine.

I just want every other applicant here to realize that the power is in your hands. Be the person and applicant that you want to be and instead of envying the accomplishments of others strive to improve yourself!

Remember, the best time to plant a tree was ten years ago. The second best time is today!

Thanks for the encouraging post, but you do know I kind of said 1.2 billion volunteer hours in a jokingly manner right? We both know that he doesnt have 1.2 billion volunteer hours. (probably haha) I'm really not depressed or sad, nor have I been for a while. I've already been accepted as you say so I have no reason to be, and I'm pretty happy with the acceptance. That being said my posts are simply for discussion.

I was kind of boosting up the poster who got an II to Duke, since we were talking about how he must have something special on his application for getting an II to Duke with a LizzyM of a 67. I use hyperbole as a mode of joking sometimes and in this case as a mode of boosting others as you probably have seen on the forums since you 've seen me around. The problem is that its too hard to get your personality across a screen of electrons so posts may seem like something else entirely!

Applied to 5 schools, 5 secondaries received.
Lizzy M = 64-67 (post-bacc work)
2 interviews complete so far. Each interview was the first conducted this year for both schools, hopefully that's a good sign
Received my 3rd II today, whoo!
Silence from the other 2 schools besides one wanting further state residency verification

Love this thread btw, and love seeing my fellow <70 applicants succeeding
 
Really shouldn't be complaining since I would consider myself pretty lucky with early interviews but...

it's been almost a month of silence now for me and it's beginning to scare me! Especially seeing other people getting IIs to my top choices. Need to push all the negativity out and focus on being thankful whatever opportunities I am given though. Keep on keepin' on!
 
Put on hold for one of my schools. One of my referees submitted LOR in the wrong format, which means a few other schools will take issue as well :smack:. Just e-mailed him asking for it to be adjusted....hopefully he isn't too over this process to care.

am I dumb to have applied to only 9 schools with a 33(retake) mcat(29 originally ) and a 3.55gpa with a 3.76 Science GPA?

I have not been rejected from anywhere but I have not received any II's either. I sent all my secondaries like mid to late August.

You're definitely not dumb, but whether you should add a few more schools to your list depends on a lot of things. Are you a good fit for the 9 you applied to (does your application align with their mission? can you talk on and on about why you want to go to that school?)? Did you apply to all of your state schools? Is your application well-rounded, or do you at least have something stellar included that many other applicants don't?

Also, if you turned in your last secondary at the end of August, I think it's probably normal to not have heard anything back yet. That being said, it may not hurt to add a few more schools if you have the $$!
 
@donovank730 I think that would make me nearly twice as dumb for applying to about half the schools you did with lower stats than you have, but I don't feel that way. Remember it's early in the cycle, control what you can (maybe take the advice of others here and apply DO), say f**k it to everything else, and keep you head up. Best of luck!

I just wanted to say that I have really been appreciating this thread! I love the encouragement, and am so impressed by everyone's accomplishments. For me so far, it's a great cycle! I applied mostly DO, only a few MD. No MD II so far, but also no rejections (complete mid-July most places) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I was able to interview at my top choice DO school last week, and should hear on a possible acceptance next week!! I hope to have the opportunity to call you all colleagues in the future 🙂 Good luck!

Update: Accepted to Rocky Vista University COM today!!!

2 MD II: one with my state school at University of Arizona in Tucson and the other with UT San Antonio (I'm also a native-born Texan, maybe this had something to do with it? Also fit very closely with their school's mission).

3 DO II: Midwestern AZCOM, Midwestern CCOM and DMU.

If you think about it, 5/40 = 12.5% turnout on II. That's really not so bad in the grand scheme of things.

And I just got my secondary app for University of Nevada today, and from what I understand they're very selective with the screening process. I think chances are EXTREMELY high to get an II after submitting it, so keep your fingers crossed for me about that.

To date I've completed three of my interviews. I feel fantastic about two and only good about one.

What about you? Of the six have you completed any interviews yet? If so, how'd they go? 🙂

6 MD II: Wayne, Drexel, Wright State, Indiana, WVU, Tulane

Only attended Wayne, but feel extremely good about it!

I'm flying to Philly tomorrow to attend Drexel's interview, and then the next week it's a road trip for two others.

I think it is really weird to get so many interviews, because I don't have any exceptional EC or stats haha, but it is flattering 🙂
