Official 2015-2016: Oh no, I don't have a single Interview Invite thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nooothing. I'm sure it's some other reason.

You think any school on that list would practice some sort of yield protection?
In extreme examples, yes. I don't think Rosalind Franklin would interview somebody who got a 40 on the MCAT because that would just be a waste of everyone's time. But I'm not the applicant that schools are yield protecting against, even if that is what my grandmother says.

Bless your grandmother. I was thinking of yield-protection post-interview. Why accept someone now when you're not sure if they'll withdraw their application post-April 30 when they have other acceptances.... and if all other schools have the same mentality, then you can be left with no acceptances pre-april 30 really...

I can think of reasons why you'll be waitlisted because your application is not so great, and also reasons why you'll be waitlisted because your application is pretty great.
Guess you'll never know until the end.. . and it's pointless to speculate (though I do indulge in it time to time).

But in my opinion, getting multiple interviews and not getting rejected by them is a feat in itself. There are people who couldn't get even a single interview, and there are people who got rejected by nearly all of the schools they interviewed at.

I want to say you already did a fine job. And in the worse case scenario where you fail to get a single acceptance, I don't want you to deny all the accomplishments you've already made this cycle. You're not entirely responsible for the outcome.

Thank you. I tend to look at application success as a binary state, but I am certainly very proud and grateful to get four interviews. I know people who have been rejected post-interview at all of the schools I interviewed with, so it could always be worse.

What's the latest that schools can wait to send out post interview decisions? I know it varies from school to school. But mid to late April seems unreasonably late to release a decision. Considering April 30th is the date you can no longer hold multiple acceptances. Ugh.

Not like I'm in the predicament of holding multiple acceptances, just trying to get ONE lol.

Last cycle I was on three waitlists until August so I'm pretty sure they can wait until day 1 of their classes

I think they were asking what's the last day you can get an initial post interview decision, accept or reject or wait list.

But I don't know the answer to that question.

Thanks a ton to both of you for the encouragement! Lifted me out of the funk I sunk into this evening.

I think I'll be cautiously optimistic. I'm sending in update/interest letters ever ~3 weeks from here on out (assuming I have new info/insight to send in) and just fired off two of them this weekend. But at the same time, I'll be looking for a new job for the upcoming year and maybe a second new volunteer position so I have some fresh material for the reapplication if it comes to that.

Thanks again all! I'll be sure to come back to this thread and update if/when any good news comes!

I mean, 4 waitlists has to be somewhat good odds right? That's alot of possible movement. I know it's incredibly stressful right now, but don't lose hope yet!

Good point, thanks! Two of them are higher yield, two not so much. We shall see

I was crushed more so by that rejection than any pre II for MD school this cycle...I felt that was my shining chance to salvage this cycle and possibly avoid reapplying.
I know me too. I thought if they ask u to apply, u get a good chance. I thought wrong. Did u ask them for feedback or call them to follow up after the rejection?

I think they can basically do whatever they want.

called them to follow up. But yeah was definitely disappointed, I assumed I had an extremely high chance.

Thanks man! I will give them a call, I really haven't been getting good feedback on my app.

I think they do a blanket invite of sorts. I got an invite too but there's absolutely nothing on my application that even hints that I'm looking to work with the under-served/disadvantaged populations (not that I don't want to, just that the application-cookies didn't crumble that way). I think I got the invite because I'm listed as E01.

This would be of no use to a school at all after an interview. All schools have a calculated number needed to fill. Delaying an acceptance is entirely counter-productive.

@bananafish94 wow I got post 4000. Do I win a free toaster, a new car, or admission to Harvard perhaps?
You've won yourself a full ride scholarship to HMS. Please respond with your full name, details, and credit card info to the Nigerian email in your inbox. We look forward to hearing from you soon and will respond shortly with details about your acceptance to HMS.

Haha! Very funny! Don't let the minority (scammers) fool you. Majority of us are hard working and great people.

At least there was no fee involved. Would have been more annoying

Mmm... I understand that reason. I'm not necessarily suggesting a delayed acceptance. More like a lower priority on the waitlist because you're not sure this applicant will attend your school over others when you want them to fill a vacant seat later in the cycle. I don't know. Just trying to learn more about the magic that happens behind admissions.

I also hear stories about people getting accepted a week before orientations (perhaps it has happened at your school as well). How does that even happen when applicants are only allowed to hold one acceptance at a time post-april 30? Do applicants forget to pay their deposit or mysteriously get zapped out of existence or something?

They may be on a wait-list at a top-choice school that accepted them, causing them to drop another acceptance.

Waitlist management varies dramatically by school and is unpredictable even at the same school from year to year.
The more likely reason for not being called from the waitlist is an acceptance to a "better" school without reason to believe the candidate prefers the school where he has been waitlisted. You'd be surprised how infrequently waitlisted candidates drop after a preferred acceptance.
I have never seen failure to make a deposit become a reason to rescind, it just elicits a gentle call to confirm.

Hey guys. I was thinking of this scenario...
Waitlist_musical_chairs.png

My guess is that top -tier girl/guy likely got a deferral (ex. to do a year of research), a rescinded acceptance (celebrated too hard after acceptance and broke the LAW), quit to go to dental school (lol) or some other reason.

Whatever, it's not important anyway. It's not like knowing the answer is going to stop someone from making contingency plans for a reapp.

If someone is holding multiple acceptances at more than 1 top tier school and they only choose one.

That's around the time after the April 30 rush when there are numerous vacancies from multiple-acceptance peeps withdrawing. As people take some time to "switch" their one-acceptance to another school, there will likely be waitlist movement for weeks.

I was talking about much much later into the cycle (late June-July) when all of those vacancies should already be filled. People do get off the waitlist rarely even during this time, and I was wondering why that may be the case.

It's whatever.

It's the same reason that people are pulled off early. Someone else withdrew...

Med schools, if you're wondering when the best time would be to send me that sweet acceptance, let me just tell you that now would be a pretty decent time.
Banana...I sure hope you get your acceptance soon. Every time I see you have a new post on this thread my heart jumps. Just once...just once I want to be able to read a post from you and I can say WOO HOO! Congrats! Damn that felt good to say that...now those damn schools better come through for you so I can say it for reals!

Well, it might happen on Thursday or Friday! 😀

I long for the day, I really do. "Panacea" is an apt description if what it would be like to get in at this point. Thank you for your kind words!

If I get into UIC this week, I will personally give everyone on this thread $1000. It doesn't matter that my current net worth is $6 and half a ham sandwich...I'll find a way.
Make it rain!
