MS3 here applying both DR & IR/DR next year. I've seen these type of threads for previous years, but it would be cool to see what this year's applicants are thinking of in terms of ranking different programs. DR, IR/DR, IR only are all welcome. Good luck to everyone in the match! Last year's format:

Applicant type:
USMLE Step 1 score:
USMLE Step 2CK score:
Number of abstracts, presentations, and publications:
AOA: yes/no
Student/graduate of one of the 40 US medical schools with the highest NIH funding: yes/no

Applicant type: DO prelim surgery PGY1 with a last minute switch to radiology after not matching into a competitive surgical subspecialty, applying DR / IR

USMLE Step 1 score: low 230s
USMLE Step 2CK score: mid 240s
Third year grades: Mostly Honors
Number of abstracts, presentations, and publications: none
AOA: n/a but the DO version
Student/graduate of one of the 40 US medical schools with the highest NIH funding: No
PhD: No
Letters: letters from surgeons in my institution, no radiology letters, but I was complimented on their strength at two interviews.
Volunteer: a lot of student leadership ECs throughout Med school, including multiple conferences.
Red flags: distant alcohol-related misdemeanors with excellent, humble explanations in my PS
Relationship status: married with a baby (location was a far more important factor for us)

I only wish I discovered radiology earlier. But I'm fortunate to be have a decent shot at matching this year (compared to last year), and especially thankful to be surrounded by such cool dudes and dudettes.

A big consideration for me was attempting to land interviews for PGY2 Physician Only positions, which are highly competitive due to the highly qualified nature of the applicants – usually high-powered surgical subspecialty rockstars who didn't match or made a late switch like me for whatever reason. I ended up getting three of these interviews, which I ranked in the top 5 (I won't include these for privacy's sake since the applicant pool is so small).

2017 physician-only R0 rank list:
3 programs, all near the top obviously

Regular rank list:
U Arizona
U New Mexico
Lahey Clinic (Boston)
Cook County (Chicago)
Kaiser Permanente LA (Categorical)
U Toledo
Aultman/Neomed (Canton OH)
Med Col Wisconsin / St Joseph (Milwaukee) (Categorical)
Texas Tech / El Paso TX
St Vincent's (Bridgeport CT)
Stoneybrook / Mather (NY)
SUNY Upstate (Syracuse)

Rejections: too many to count. No interviews for any IR programs. I applied everywhere. Literally.
Waitlists: None
Declined Interviews: none

Other than the 3 PGY2 positions, the rest are all categorical and begin in 2018 (except for Kaiser LA and Med Col Wisc - Mather), which for me ends up giving me a gap year between the end of this surgery intern year and the start of radiology residency. I'm not sure if having a surgery intern year was beneficial to program directors worried about funding (surgery residents have 5 years of 100% funding, IM prelims only have 3 years with full funding and only 50% thereafter), but I'm glad that didn't hold me back.

For you DOs that have mediocre scores like me, keep your head up and, as they say, apply broadly!

Hopefully this will help some others

I know my list won't make sense to a lot of people, but was based a lot on the fact that I would like to practice in Boston, thus why the NE was weighted high. That said, you can't deny the awesomeness of Michigan IR. Also value location a lot and tried to balance this with the feel of the program (e.g. Baltimore sucks but Hopkins had some of my favorite people I met on the trail, Colorado ahead of MIR, etc). And as far as how I ranked IR and DR, there was a lot of thought that went into it and too many factors to write about here, but I promise there is a logic behind the chaos.

Declined interviews: U of Mississippi, U of Arizona, LSU Shreveport, St Joseph Arizona, NEOMED

Thoughts: I wanted IR above all else, but would like to end up in MI. University of NM was probably my favorite, but I had to give the solid MI programs a shot for my wife who's family is in MI. I think being a DO with no research hurt me the most, but solid board scores, top 10% of class, and an applicable work history helped me. In hindsight I would definitely have banged out some easy case reports to pad my app a little bit. I was advised that research wasn't necessary for rads but I should have known better since I was also told DOs didn't need to take USMLE (glad I at least ignored this advice). Hope it all works out, good luck to everyone!

Folks, for this cycle - please create your own second anonymous SDN account and post in this thread - avoid sharing a single account because it has caused issues in the past.

I'll ask our programmers to create a feature for the next cycle so members can post without showing member information (so nobody has to share an account or create a second account).

Anybody want to get this going again? It was pretty entertaining compared to the robots taking over the world conversation.

This was the most active and useful thread on the radiology forum in a long time. With its decision, SDN has stopped the conversation completely. The momentum is gone. It's foolish to think that anyone would go through the laborious process of creating a fake account to post a rank list.

Probably. I think the radiology forum has been quiet for a while regardless though. A lot of the attendings/residents that used to post here faded away. Now it's mostly med students advising other med students.

We could always post with our actual accounts. They are all anonymous anyway.

The thread was super active until it it was suspended. 7,000 views in 2-3 days?! It's unlikely everyone just abandoned ship; momentum was definitely slowed though.
