Anyone in here that applied this cycle who did a Masters program bc of a lower undergrad GPA? Or know of someone who did one and got in/interviews?

Have a buddy who went to UNC and had an ugrad GPA of 2.7. He did a master of physiology at ncsu with a 4.0 and got 23 AA 23 TS 23 PAT with a 16 QR who has an interview at Case and ECU so far.

Damn where else did you apply? Harvard?

I'm surprised. Don't you have like pretty good stats? I wonder what part of the application they were looking for.
I'm not sure. I will call next week after I've had some time to get over the initial emotions. I can say off the bat that my leadership was not as strong as I would have liked, and I did not have any research experience. Otherwise, I thought my personal statement, letters, dental experiences, and extracurriculars were pretty good.

Yeah leadership experience is probably my weakness too

Well I hope everything else goes well! Good luck the rest of the cycle. You got this!

No need to be emotional! You have great stats, and I'm sure you'll get into a number of schools.

Rejected by UCSF as well =(

Wow with those stats.. that's odd

that isn't true at all....i mean hell they don't even have an instate/OOS preference.
???? UCSF absolutely has an instate preference, they're a CA state school. Just look at the numbers: http://dentistry.ucsf.edu/sites/default/files/content/2016-_ucsf_admissions_outreach_6x9card_fnl.pdf

But I would agree, no way they "prefer" UCs over CSUs. If you have what they're looking for (whatever that mystery quality may be), then they don't care. I know people from CSUs, UCs, and private CA schools alike who got interviews from SF. I think they've been around long enough to realize that any perceived quality of the school doesn't define the student.

Wrong. They do not. They've answered this question numerous times and they've said they don't have a preference. the reason they accept more california applicants is because more qualified californian applicants apply.

I also abought the 2017-2018 ADEA online thing and UCSF says there that they don't have a preference. I can screen shot later if you want evidence.

They have a lower minimum GPA requirement for IS applicants. I don't claim to know what dental schools are looking for (cue nervous sweating), but it seems like UCSF does have an IS preference just based on the numbers.

Yes but trust me, they don't have a preference. There is even a youtube video where the director directly addresses this question. He says they don't even look at the state of residency.

Edit: here's the video. It's somewhere near the beginning.

Trust me i wish they did have a preference - i'm from california.

If I was a director I'd accept instate students but then I would tell people I don't have a preference for in state, that way I'd get hella supplemental fees from everyone.. who else would pay for my yacht? 😉

Or they could just accept more OOS students to begin with so they make double in tuition - sort of like the UC's tend to do for undergrad 🙂

True true, but then their alumni program may not be as strong since the OOS students may return to their state of origin and forget about UCSF

Also rejected by UCSF... and it was my top choice!! 🙁

Okay, now this is getting weird...
I feel like there has to be something about our applications that makes it an immediate rejection since in past years they do hold on to some people's applications for a while before eventually sending rejection or interview offer while others they send rejection really early.

I think they held on to a lot more in the past because they got applications in waves. Now they get them instantly so it's easier to compare everyone together, so they know whether or not they want to hold onto an application.

It could also be that a lot of people's apps are being held (like mine 🙁 ) but they just don't post about it.

Also I highly doubt this many qualified people had things in their app that made them "immediately rejectable".

When our dental club visited UCLA dental school the admissions advisor told us the last time they accepted a CSU student was 2012 and also she said we view a csu gpa of 3.5 as a UC 3.2

Are we talking about UCLA or UCSF? I understand some CSU's aren't the best, but there are a couple UC's that really aren't that great either. Most california residents are aware of that.

I kno right?! Pisses me off that UCLA would say that

Thanks for setting me straight! I still feel like there HAS to be something about CA that causes them to look differently? I'm obviously biased and I love this state and our schools blah blah blah but there's so many equally qualified OOS that the numbers don't make sense.... Or maybe I just now have denial from cognitive dissonance lol, either way I'm glad to know

lol what, I know students from CSU in both 16 and 17 cycles who're at UCLA dental. Maybe they had 3.9s and stellar DATs or something (although I think a 3.2=3.5 is a bizarre comparison) but how weird that she'd try to discourage a whole set of applicants....

That's awkward cuz I go to a CSU school and a girl from my dental club just finished her first year at UCLA.

I know this girl, I think. Small world. She got a 25 on her DAT though so that might be why.

I said "when our club visited UCLA". So yea, I'm talking about UCLA specifically. That's why I asked the OP if maybe UCSF felt the same way since she got denied with great stats..

what are my chances of getting an interview with NOVA (mother went and sister currently going there)? haven't taken DAT yet ... but if I manage to get 20s across the board on it what are my chances? I know my stats are low but im wondering if i should take a gap year and make sure i get great DAT scores, do mission trips, shadow, etc or if i should bother applying this cycle ... (just graduated this week)

sGPA: 3.28
uGPA: 3.39 ( might take a couple courses to get this over 3.40 ?)

It is kinda hard to say without you taking your dat yet. However what your aiming for on the DAT will give you a great shot! When were you planning to take the DAT?

Really ? that's great to hear, I honestly try so damn hard (for pretty crappy grades)... i want to take it before December using this Iprep dental course ive heard so much of. Also gotta take microbiology course during that time. Does applying early really help? especially for someone like me?
