Official 2018 SHPEP thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think we should have a forum party the 15 minutes leading up to midnight, it I’ll keep eveyone sane. 😀

Does anyone know more about the health insurance requirement? Ths official website said they can help with those who don’t have it but some sites say they won’t (Columbia, and UCLA, for example.)

I was literally going to suggest this! yes!!

Dumb question but since SHPEP runs on eastern time that means results are out at 9 pm for all the west coast applicants?

@Girlington1234 . I'm not sure to be completely honest. I was rejected at the other 2 I applied to. I don't remember which ones I applied to. I applied as a freshmen and I remember that it was more difficult to get in as a Freshmen. Some of my peers at HU SMDEP 2010 (I actually keep in touch with them!) mention that this was their only acceptance too.

I did mention to my classmates to apply and one of them did get accepted and attended HU. Another one applied and said he got accepted... but never went. I always found this odd because why would you not attend if you got accepted? Its all paid for... so not sure if he actually got accepted or not.

So I think that attending helped me realize I needed to get my act together. Before attending I had a 3.5 GPA and only volunteered 4 hours a week. I met people with perfect SAT scores and 4.0s as a freshmen at HU. I was like... oh snap, I need to start doing more. So it was helpful to see other people from different universities and how driven they were about dentistry and medicine.

The program was good. We had classes 4 days a week 8-4pm. We took biochem, genetics, physics, orgo, ethics, writing. The ethics and writing weren't terribly helpful because how much can you learn in such a short amount of time? The sciences courses were a like a trial run before actually taking the class at your own university. I did well at HU, but I did GREAT when I went back to my own institution and already knew the concepts/application of the science. At HU we didn't get to dive in all the material you would cover but we did cover enough to give me a slight advantage. We also have shadowing once a week which was fun. Got to watch a couple surgeries and go on rounds. We met med students who provided useful advice. We went on planned trips (NIH, med museum, six flags). Overall, it was the perfect balance of work and fun for 6 weeks.

@PhilzCoffeeAddict They mention classes that you can take for some of the sites I applied to. Are they set up like actual classes or like workshops?

Actual class at HU. Not sure for the other locations. We had 1-2 hour classes in physics, orgo, genetics, biochem. Lecture is lecture, but make sure you study so when you go back to your institution you get a leg up on everyone else. Some people formed study groups, I studied on my own.

Wow that sounds like an experience! Hopefully, the program is still like this, it would be great to get a leg up on upcoming classes and the concepts!

I’m so excited for the results and to know everyone’s statuses! Is everyone going to update when the time comes? Once again, I applied to Rutgers, Nebraska, and UCLA for nursing!
I’ll update!!! We literally only have like 3 1/2 hours left!! I’m so excited. Should I take a nap then wake up when it’s close to the time??? Don’t know what to do with myself lol :soexcited:

We’re all going to make it!! Speak it into existence!!

Omg I am WAY too nervous to even consider sleeping! I really wish I could take a nap..

who applied to UF dental?

I applied to UF too. I am feeling the nerves because I am a freshman.

I'm trying to watch a movie to pass the time but I can't even focus on that!! 🤔 Definitely going to update no matter what. I'm rooting for us all! Best of luck everybody!! We got this🙂

@updat same. Currently trying to distract myself by pre-reading some trig stuff for when school starts next week.....

I think so! I’m not too sure though. I know for us it’s only two hours away in that case. If not, just wait the next hour.

Are we certain they will be posted at midnight?
so if I'm central time results will be posted at 11?

yeah from last year it seemed everyone got it when they released it at midnight, so hopefully its the same

I read the thread for 2017 and the people who applied got their decisions at midnight eastern time, I guess we can expect the same. Unless they changed it

Hey everyone! I recently accepted a spot at an MD-PhD summer research program at Yale Med School, so I'll be withdrawing my SHPEP spot (if I even get in lol). Still looking forward to seeing what I get, and I wish the best of luck to everyone - hopefully my spot gets someone off the waitlist that deserves it, and this post is a reminder in advance that there most likely are many people like me that will not accept their spot!!!

Just for stat stuff, I go to a low-ranked school in Massachusetts, 3.8 GPA, biochem. freshman taking upper-division courses, URM/low-income/first-gen, research experience at a top school, and very impressive community service leadership for URM and global populations. I applied as medicine to UCLA, Columbia, and Rutgers.

Well done! Congrats!

It is kind of odd that this thread is so short. Pretty much the same people have been writing since the first page. Hopefully that does mean less applicants, which might improve our chances 🙂

I need 30 credits a year (15 per semester) in order to be eligible for the Excelsior Scholarship, for which NY state covers the entirety of tuition. I still have to pay for textbooks, fees, and gas etc.

Oh and thanks, I hear Organic is fairly difficult, how is it treating you?
Orgs 1 isn't too bad...got an A- in that...but Orgo 2 has me like "bruh is this even real?"

I’m sorry. I’m new to this forum, although I’ve been lurking for a few weeks. Lol But the results will definitely be posted at 12am est. I seen it on Twitter. Someone asked on the shpep page and they said yes @ 12am est.

Hey girl! Thanks 🙂
Where did you apply?
