Official 2019-2020 GI Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No doubt every spot has it’s strengths and weaknesses but if someone has 20 interviews they must be a very competitive well rounded candidate. Most likely to match in their top 5 at worst case scenario. That’s why I find it fascinating.

Haven't heard much about the Cali systems. Anyone have any insight on UC Riverside or Irvine? Their websites are kind of cryptic.

I did not interview at UCR but did at UCI last year. This is obviously an opinion formed after being there for a half day at UCI, so take it with a large grain of salt:

Two interview days offered IIRC. Both on saturday. There was about 40-50 applicants on my day alone, so I imagine they interview about 80-100 for 4 spots. Met with 5-6 faculty in a round robin format (one was a 3rd year fellow), each interview was about 10min. Felt uncomfortably short.

I overall felt that the program had a weird vibe. The fellows were all very nice, chill, and did not seem overworked. They genuinely seemed to enjoy being fellows there. Interestingly, the Gi department chair was there, but basically just gave a brief introduction about the department and kept emphasizing that it was a great department and also spent half the time talking about his advanced endoscopy practice, which to my understanding is excellent but trains international fellows primarily from Asia, so the General GI fellows don’t get much exposure. He did not interview anyone and promptly left after the introduction. There is no transplant hepatology at the program. There are two IbD specialists, the program director and a new hire who did her advanced IbD at UCSF. I don’t remember a strong motility presence either.

I felt that it was a decent program for General GI training but without transplant hep and much IBD exposure was going to be limited. The number of interviewees was also a red flag, seemed that they interviewed 20:1, whereas most other large academic programs only needed 10:1. Even more surprising given the location in SoCal/Orange County.

I love people when I meet someone with 15+ Interviewing at low tier programs. They improve the chances other applicants by decreasing competition since they can only match at 1 out of the 15 programs.

I don’t even know how they all go to all these interviews. How many days off can you get.

That’s how it statistically works out, but it’s always hard to see that in the moment when most places have 3-4 spots of which usually at least 1 (often more) is for internal, with remaining spots usually around 7-10 interviewees per spot.

I d be careful at declaring places low tier... While there are handful of prgrams that might have issues , on the whole most places are very solid with each having own strengths and weaknesses . There are "top tier" brands with entire sub specialties of GI missing and some community programs that provide a well rounded education...

People assume community programs don’t have good training, but this far from the truth. Also, if you know you want to do private practice, a community program may be a better choice.

Hi, anyone knows anything about Kent hospital in RI? And does it matter if you are MD going to to a DO fellowship? Thanks!

What about Northwestern? Not that I am interviewing there! lol but I though they had strong motility.

Dr JP is the king. All hail JP from northwestern. They do have a strong faculty who has so much power and is an incredibly brilliant compassionate and most importantly influential in all motility meetings, research and patient care.
But they are not as strong as others. Since they are not an ANMS center of excellence for motility fellowship

Does anyone know if the Yale interview really goes until 4:30?
People actually finished at different times from 2 30 to 4. It just depends if your interviewer is available on time and the order of your interviews

How many of the current fellows on the thread sent letters of "intent" to their number 1 and/or top programs? If so, how do you think it affected your match result?

Not at all much live for all DO gastroenterologist and programs
Hi, sorry I am not sure I know what you meant. You don't know the program or it does not matter if you go to DO fellowship? Thanks!!!

I meant much love for the program and their staff. Good people and solid training.

I sent one to the program that I ranked first. The others I just send a thank you card or give them hand written thank you card and I the end I indicated I was hoping to join them.

community for private practice is a good option. But in the end we all work and go to same meetings and see the same type of disease. Is what you want that matters. I wanted advance, liver, motility, nutrition and IBD.

but a friend of mine just wanted private practice. He is now doing advance fellowship

the head of advance endoscopy at clevelend clinic is an img who went to a small community program for residency and fellowship... i know a whole bunch of such examples..

Finding difficulty booking IV number 12, as an AMG you guys think 11 is enough to basically guarantee match? Have had strong responses to interviews so far.

In my opinion, After 10+ interviews. it’s all the same. Means u have a strong application and u r a competitive candidate. If you still do not match it’s means you need to improve your interviewing skills.

Are "second wave" invites even a thing, has anyone received an invite weeks after they initially went out?

I don’t think there’s a second wave, per se. Only that people will drop and programs will want to fill those spots. I’ve already declined 3 invites since many dates overlap and I couldn’t move things around in a way that worked. I’m pretty sure those invites went to candidates on those respective programs’ short list. That’s why those of us considering dropping interviews should do it as soon as we know there is no way the scheduling will work. Don’t waste that program’s time by holding out till the last minute. You may be withholding an opportunity for another applicant and it’s unprofessional to wait till the last minute to cancel.

Agree with the above. I had to decline 2 overlaps as well. It’s better to do it earlier

Anyone know if NYU Winthrop has an IV day other than 10/15. I'm looking to trade if someone else is interested in 10/15, thanks!

If the interviewer asks a particular interest in GI, is it safe to say that I want to explore everything and keep my options open when I start fellowship?

Any insight regarding MUSC, UMiami, and Loma Linda?

Does anyone know what are the interview dates offered by UTSW? Asking for someone wait listed by their program.

Thank you

hi all ,
Looking to swap my UCSF Fresno date on 10/22 with 10/18. Please message me if interested. Thank you.

When a program director writes to you post-interview about how you would be a "really good fit and addition" to their program....any thoughts?

Did you email a thank you before or was it totally unprovoked?

Did anyone get IV from Suny Downstate? I don't see it in the list.

must be stoneybrook

Either Stoney, Suny Upsate, Rochester, St. Peters they all send this, is nice, answer back politely as was said here on the forum and thank them.

Mayo Rochester does this also but when Mayo does it, is only for their top applicants they know they want to rank 1 to 7.

Others do it so they don't go unfilled.
