Official 2019 Step 2 CK Experiences and Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I realized that I posted in 2018 thread, haha.

Step I: 218

UWSA 1 (2 months out): 237
UWSA 2 (1 month out): 244
NBME 6,7,8(each a week apart up to exam): 225, 218, 230

Step II: 256

I’m really happy with the improvement! I was really down on myself with step I. My goal is IM.

what I realized with the first step was I spent WAY too much time trying to RE-read through materials (first AID, pathoma, etc) rather than doing questions (I had roughly 700 questions undone).

For second step, I made sure to go through the Online MedEd vids throughout the year, in addition to using UWorld for shelf study. By the time April rolled around I had taken all of my shelfs. I still had roughly 800 UWorld Qs undone but I reset the bank anyways to try and pace to finish all of questions by my exam date (mid-June). By the end of my study period this time I had roughly 150 questions unfinished (I just take forever with questions). I was much more improved on my “second pass” (60% to 74ish% correct on reset).

The other thing I did differently was I did my questions on tutor mode by category (occasionally I did timed and mixed sets). This helped a lot more because in the process of seeing questions within a specific discipline (eg cardio) it helps with comparing and contrasting things that you can easily mix up. It also gives you the chance to apply a topic you got wrong on a subsequent question to help reinforce understanding. This is in contrast to step I where I did all of my question sets mixed and untimed. I realize that while it simulates the real exam with variety in content and timing, you don’t get the same opportunity to compare and contrast as I had previously mentioned. Anyways, you can get practice with timing/mixed topics with the practice exams.

Also, I saved bioethics/stats questions until the last week before the exam (dirty usmle on youtube was great for quick review before questions).

Lastly, I took two days off prior to this exam (for step 1 I made the mistake of trying to cram those 2 days). It really helps you feel fresh going in.

Overall:
- Get through UWorld. Do a second pass if possible! Try to redo incorrect questions!
- online meded
- rest before exam
- I also had firecracker - the daily questions are great, and having random flash cards are a good way to review if you need a break or change of pace from the UWorld practice questions (less energy and effort but still an opportunity to learn.)

This is my personal experience, so obviously everyone has their own preference. But the important thing is to try and do something different if the first time didn’t work out the way you wanted. For me, getting through more questions and having more reps that way was a game changer.

Good luck everyone!

This is a great post, I was just telling a friend of mine last night how I have not being doing mixed questions because I learn better with doing questions system wise it helps me reinforce the material. Initially I was thinking I will do mixed the 3 last weeks before my exam but when I took my school CCSE exam recently I did not feel apprehensive doing mixed 200 questions. So Happy seeing your post today, because I like to go back and reference questions a lot and it’s easier when doing system wise.

How many hours a day did you study for? also where able to go back and do your incorrect when you were done? How many blocks a day did you do?

Hi Everyone,
Just spoke to ECFMG, most likely all scores will be released Aug 28th at this point for those that took it after June 23rd. Unfortunate but hopefuly this changes. He was pretty sure that nothing will be released before than. Another few weeks to go!
Just wanted to share that with those that are waiting like me, checking every week lol.

Well, no score yet so it looks like you are right about this. Took my test 6/28. I'm honestly beyond upset at this point and actually feeling deflated. This is totally unacceptable for a computer based exam that is multiple choice with all questions already pre-screened as sample questions on previous exams! They already have statistical analysis on all these new questions. I don't see why they need 2 months to grade a multiple choice test!

My only theory is that they want to gather a large enough sample size of students taking the new test forms so they can adjust the curve if the students outperform or underperform their anticipated averages. Individual questions may have already been pre-screened as sample questions on previous exams; meaning they already know on average what percentage of test takers will get any particular question correct. However, they probably have no data on how students will perform on the overall 318 question exam as a whole. So they need to gather enough data over this 8 week period so they can make adjustments if needed before assigning us scores. I guess this is understandable and I would prefer that our scores be fair, accurate, and comparable to those who took the old exams. My only criticism of this situation is I wish they would have taken into consideration the proximity of August 28th to ERAS application deadlines. These scores carry so much weight in regards to how many interviews we get, where we get interviews, and even what specialties are realistic options. USMLE scores are, quite frankly, career makers and breakers! I think it is inconsiderate to keep students in the dark and stressed out for such a long period of time right before applications are due, when the score itself is a key component of the application and may impact what programs students apply to; or even if they want to apply at all! In my opinion these changes in test forms and score report delays should be done in January- March, not July-Aug.

Sorry guys, that's my rant for the day. Had to release some of my frustration lol. I wish everyone who is taking the test soon the best of luck. And for those of us still waiting for scores, 4 week countdown begins today.

Totally agree man. Depending on the student and intended specialty, these could totally change someone's career. Those students need time to adjust away rotations, AIs, LORs, etc.

Maybe the NBME needs to undergo empathy training as much, if not more than, current medical students.

Feels like students were disregarded in this decision, which is not right as it affects us the most. And that this decision was made based on the examiner's convenience.

The issue is basically no one takes CK that time of year. They bring in the new questions during the peak testing period so they can reach the number of desired testers as quickly as possible.

Took step2 yesterday and it was demoralizingly difficult.
Harder than step 1 by a mile ( and I got >260 on step 1).
There was so much minutia on there, or fringe things from 3rd year, but exam was just so brutally difficult it was 9 hours of pain.
I like to write things down to look u p later so I have about 100 questions I looked up of things I was unsure of, and have close to 20 wrong written down, and thats just of the things I remember.
Can anyone please tell me what you know you got wrong or step 2 and how that correlated to your score?
My 2 practice exams were 266 on UWSA1 and 99% on the CCSE, but I unfortunately missed some gimmies on this exam. Really hoping I didn't blow it, but I honestly felt like I did during the exam and now.
(for contrast I know I missed 14 on step 1)

I counted 16 and got a 261, but I forgot a lot. I got 267 and 271 on UWSAs, so I was a bit disappointed. That too the 267 was prior to even my dedicated starting. I too felt it was random as **** with minutia. I found some answers only in trials. I was not a fan because that can cause wild score swings if it is based on too much guessing. People who guess well btw will argue they have some intuitive genius. This I have noticed is very much hardly true because confirmation bias leads us to rationalize much of our successes as due talent rather than luck. This is coming from someone who lucked out on STEP1 and scored above his practice scores. This time the pendulum swung a bit the other way.

Similar stats to you and thought it was absolutely brutal. Hoping there's a good curve. I didn't write down what I thought I got wrong bc I didn't want to psych myself out anymore. At this point I'm just hoping for a pass, but hopefully I did alright. Only 1 more month to wait...

Similar boat > 260 step 1. Know I got at least 20 wrong bc this was just such a weird and random exam. Also missed gimmes. I think (hope?) that is normal

You'll be fine. I counted about 18 misses and ended with a 273; I absolutely missed many more than that.

What’s up everyone. I’ve been one of those following posts on this thread for help on CK and other threads on SDN and Reddit for studying for Step 1 and 3rd year shelfs during 2nd and 3rd years. I figured now that I am done with both Step 2s, all 3rd year shelfs, and of course Step 1, it is now my turn to contribute some [hopeful] wisdom to help other students. It's better when we look out for each other. Feel free to ask questions on here or message me privately if you’d like to know any more details regarding what I post, especially regarding CK.

To preface, I am not a natural genius. I like to think I am just your average guy who is a story of working hard, but maintaining balance throughout med school. It is possible to do well in med school and have a solid life. Take care of yourself through each of these seasons; discipline includes rest. For me, that was found in my faith, my wife, my family, and my friends. The scores below are better than I could've ever prayed for or hoped for, and I am so thankful to have them behind me. All that said, here it goes!

Step 1, 241:
My Step 1 score was a 241. It was directly between my UWSA1 score of 239 taken one month out and my UWSA2 score of 243 taken one week out. I studied roughly 8 weeks for it, only used UWorld, First Aid, and Pathoma, and took two NBMEs of which I made a 228 and 219 on. I regret taking the NBMEs because they were highly underpredictive and discouraging to me, which influenced how I studied for CK.

Third Year Shelf Exams:
In general, I always used as many questions as possible via Uworld, AAFP for FM, or UWise for OB. However, I didn’t even entertain using the new, trendy Q banks like AMBOSS or another Q bank, nor would I have in hindsight, because they aren't proven in my opinion yet or at least better than the gold standard UWorld. I used limited resources, such as books, during third year, did not care for OME, and survived off of reading my notes repeatedly from UWorld Qs and those I found online. See details below. I have arranged the exams in the order of which I took them during third year. I honored 6/6 clerkships and the numerical grade I am reporting are my raw scores, not some ambiguous percentile. Honoring for our school requires honoring the exam and honoring via clerkship evals. I refer to some online notes in my reviews below; if you wish to have the links to them, I can send them.

Pediatrics, 84%, Honored – This exam was most important to me, as I am applying pediatrics this year. I did UWorld x2, took detailed notes of the Qs and reviewed them upwards of 7x, used an incredible compilation of notes I found online that I can send the link to if desired, and grazed over OME (which I feel did not help much). This was my first exam, so I thought arguably the hardest. I took all practice NBMEs in the two weeks before the exam and honored all of those too. I also raged through PreTest two days before and feel it helped a lot doing it right before.
Ob/Gyn, 86%, Honored – The key for honoring Ob/Gyn for me was UWise. I also did UWorld, but the details of this clerkship are found in the UWise Q bank. I thought Case Files was a waste of time, and I stopped even attempting this book during this clerkship. I found some great notes online that also helped push me over the edge I believe. I took one practice NBME and did not honor it, but was on the cusp, so do with that info what you would like!
Internal Medicine, 85%, Honored – You know the people who say doing UWorld and reviewing it neurotically for the details is all you need to honor IM? I am one of those people. That’s all I did. I didn’t read SUTM or any other books like Case Files. Uworld is all you need so long as you meticulously review each answer and explanation. I also found great notes online I reviewed several times. I took all the NBME practice exams, and they were either honoring or on the border.
Psychiatry, 87%, Honored – Fun fact, I was sick this week, so I really minimalized my studying for this exam. I did Uworld of course plus FA for Psych, which was totally sufficient. No fancy online notes existed for this one, and I only took one practice NBME which I honored.
Surgery, 87%, Honored – Preface for this exam: I had IM, Peds, and OB before this exam, which I believe helped tremendously. Although many say it was the hardest exam, it did not feel so to me simply because I had these other clerkships before. I did the most reading during this clerkship though. I read De Virgilio, which is easily the best resource other than Uworld I used all third year, plus his Qs in the back. I also read Pestanas x3 and did his Qs; this book is excellent towards the middle and end of the clerkship after you’ve done some UWorld and other studying. Nix Surgical Recall. All your surgery residents will tell you it’s a must, but I doubt it will help much on your shelf like these other two do. It may score you pimping style points, but guess how much that helps your overall grade in the long run, save MAYBE a clinical eval… cero. Uworld of course is key in this clerkship as well. I did three practice NBMEs for this one and honored all 3. No fancy notes online.
Family Medicine, 81%, Honored – Welcome to the biggest curveball exam of third year. This was my last exam, so I pulled much of my knowledge from the other 5 to honor this one. I also did 1000 AAFP questions, reviewed them in-depth like I always did UWorld, and slammed through PreTest two days before. I took one practice NBME and honored it.

Step 2 CS, Pass First Attempt:
I took two weeks at the end of third year before studying for CK to study for CS. I just studied maybe 3-4 hours/day and went through FA CS 2x. I practiced a few cases with my wife (not a med student) and some classmates. I studied more than the usual time because I was not even going to chance failing this exam. It is high risk, low reward – meaning, no one genuinely cares if you pass because it is expected, but failing is a huge deal. I also bought the UWorld CS thing, but it was a waste. I took CS in Houston. Something to keep in mind is that our school sees standardized patients every week in the first two years, so I felt very comfortable with the SPs and what I was supposed to do. However, FACS helps give you info that can save you from failing in CS, like screening questions, counseling your SPs, etc. Do NOT fly into this exam blind.

Step 2 CK, 258:
I took exactly four weeks to study for CK. I had gone through all of UWorld previously during third year, averaging 74%. My strategy was simple and not cheeky – Uworld. I did every question again, aside from surgery since I had just had surgery + did not have time to redo them, and meticulously reviewed every single question again. I did 140/day every day, studying from 0630 to 1630, took a two-hour break for dinner and a TV show, then reviewed from 1830 to 2000 and went to bed. I averaged in the end 82% on my second pass. I reviewed my notes throughout those 4 weeks, as well as my surgery notes taken from my previous clerkship, and glanced over the pediatrics and IM notes I found online of which I referenced above in being critical for honoring those two clerkships. I did not use any book, OME, or AMBOSS to study for CK. I said “sayonara” to the garbage NBME exams, not taking a single one aside from a practice CCSE required for our school at the end of third year six weeks before my CK, of which I scored a 235 without any studying. I only took UWSA1, in which I scored a 258, and UWSA2, in which I scored a 259. I will continue to be one of those who promote the use of UWSA for predictors over NBMEs for Step 1 and for CK, although I realize there are outliers for which these over- or underpredict heavily. In general, I have observed UWSAs for each to be way better predictors than the NBMEs though. I reviewed both UWSA1 and UWSA2, as they had great questions. I took UWSA1 two weeks before my exam and UWSA2 one week before. I got only 4 hours of sleep before my CK because I was so nervous. Like everyone else, I walked out fearing I scored well below my Step 1 and UWSA scores and felt it was significantly harder than I expected it to be, rivaling Step 1 in difficulty. Like many others, I was elated to see the UWSAs were strong predictors for me.

I realize this is a lot of information jammed into one post, and not all the information pertains to the 2019 CK score thread, so I apologize to those who get stingy about that. If anyone has any idea where else I should post this info, please let me know, as I want my experience to help everyone else not only taking CK, but also Step 1 and the shelf exams. I want others to be encouraged that I am not some natural brainiac who sold his soul to do well. I was able to maintain a balanced life throughout med school and still better than I could've ever prayed for or hoped for. Thanks for reading everybody, and thank you to everyone who has posted their feedback in the past too! Let me know if anyone has any questions or wants any feedback/advice.
can you DM me those links or post them on here broski?

I thought step 2 was 100x harder than step 1, and ended up with a 264.

For reference, I got a 250 on step 1 with UWSA 1 and 2 being 255 and 267 respectively.

I’m waiting on this score too. I don’t know if I should prepare to apply for a back up or not. If I don’t score at least 10 points higher I may need to prepare myself with lors and change my essay. I’m not sure what to do at this point. I won’t have time after aug 28th to collect lORs for the backup speciality. This sucks.

Hi everyone. I am posting to get feedback from you guys about my chances to match orthopedics this cycle -2020. Everything about my application screams average but in person I know that I am above average (work ethic, pleasure to be around) I head off for my first away soon.

Step 1: 249
Step 2: 249

US MD school
URM
No AOA or GHHS
Preclinical: (Half H, Half HP)
Clerkship: only Honored one clerkship (Neurology). Had to remediate FM for a low shelf score, remediation was an 81. Pass in IM (Shelf 81, poor evals, had beef with an attending). HP everything else.
4 pubs
couple of school leadership positions and volunteer work nothing big

Just had the residency advising meeting at my school and they seemed concerned about me matching, wanted me to apply to several community programs and dual apply 5-10 prelim general surgery programs as back up.

Do you think I will match??
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

this is not the place to ask about ur stats or match Qs

having said that 1 honor is not very good, and if you got bad feedback thats also some red flags.

The rest of ur app looks pretty standard for ortho

Were you not initially planning on applying to community programs? I feel like with your app you kinda have to.

Hello guy , I just did my test last Wednesday ,
I felt so terrible getting out of the exam . The last thing I want to think of is that I have failed it 🙁
The exam was vague , I ended up marking 15 - 18 questions in each section . And I didnt have time to go over it again.
I have worked really hard for this exam , over 6 months studying and now just feeeling so down that I might fail it 🙁

Hi everyone. Any suggestions on how to improve on pulmonology? I already ran through OME and did not feel that it helped a lot.

Both my UWSAs were 261 (one and two weeks ago) and NBME 8 yesterday was a 260. Respiratory and, to a lower degree, endocrinology are the only things that are consistently trending towards lower performance. I think fixing them can stabilize me in the 260s (fingers crossed). Test in 3 days.

Thanks
Hello

maybe try doing Zanki for pulmonology

Maybe you could do a week long boards and beyond subscription? Idk how much it would help

So I can't speak for thinkingitout but based on their last message it seems the Step 3 trick wouldn't work for them, since they won't get CS back until late August.

The trick seems consistent with what I've read from other people's posts and my research on it as well. So for me, I took and successfully passed Step 1 and Step 2 CS, and Step 2 CK was the last of the three exams that I am waiting on. I am still a student so I have not received my diploma, yet the trick was able to work for me (iirc you need an MD in order to take Step 3, but it seems you don't need the MD for the FSMB trick to work). I was reading other people's experiences on this thread and for some the trick doesn't show up until the Tuesday before Wednesday. It worked for me on a Monday which means I probably got lucky, because otherwise I could totally see myself freaking out about getting the error message and constantly refreshing the page lol.

Now, about the "Pass/Fail" status thing. Based on what other people have said (at least 2 accounts of this), the blank space for the last Step should show up as a "Pass" (or a "Fail" I guess) around 1 AM Wednesday morning, but the actual FSMB trick (the one that I did about 12 hours ago) seems to work a couple days beforehand. Anyway, hopefully this helps give an idea. I'm merely here as a data-point that confirms the consistency of this purported "theory". And I guess it does make sense logically - Their database must have a binary for every Step and an algorithm that checks that the user has passed all 3 exams, then allows them to register/apply for Step 3. Only thing I will say is it wouldn't make sense for someone to have passed Step 1, Step 2 CS, and then the week that they are allowed to apply for Step 3 receive a failing score on Step 2 CK, because then why would they be allowed to take Step 3 at that point. So the trick does make sense, it's just a little weird that the trick is allowed to be something we can do lol...

And thank you for the congrats, but I'm not going to celebrate until Wednesday when I know for sure lol
hey!! congratulations on great score! i took exam later that week and waiting for ck scores that are delayed till august 28. my step 3 says not eligible to take the exam. My permit was expiring june 30 regardless so it disappeared recently (extension permit disappeared). idk how the step 3 trick works or will i get score this week or after 28 aug. please guide me.

Hi all -- joining in the fun!
I took the test last week and it was HORRID but glad it's over. I have no idea how it went or how to feel about it because some of the things they were asking were absolutely ridiculous to ask, but I expect I passed. Not sure where I will land, but here's what I did:

3.5 weeks dedicated, used only UWorld timed mixed everything, 160-200/day. Reset the bank at the beginning of dedicated, had done about 2/3 of it throughout the year. Managed to do about 2600 of the 3000 questions but somewhat upset that I couldn't finish the bank.

Step 1: 252 (higher than my best practice test by a few points)
Clerkships: honors
NBME6 (day 0 of dedicated): 235
NBME8 (3 weeks out): 239
UWSA1 (2 weeks out): 257
NBME7 (1 week out): 237
UWSA2 (2 days before test): 255

It seems like the NMBE exams are pessimistic and the UW ones are telling me I'll be okay matching or beating my step 1. Time will tell, but man the burnout is real.

Any ideas how to interpret this constellation of scores?

The wait for scores is killing me.... it would be like a week out without the delay for me. The 2 extra weeks are pure torture. I feel for you guys that took it back in June....
Yep, that is me! I took my test back in June when the new test forms first came out. It's been so long I've kind of forgotten that I took the CK. By the time scores are released I won't even be excited anymore. It'll just be like "ehhhh whatever, back to work."

I wish I could forget that test... The wait is killing me.

NBME are a bunch of selfish bastards.

Imagine how many applications may have to be changed to a different specialty and you'll have less than a week to get new LORs and change up your app if you crap out on step 2.

I pray that nobody, including myself, has to go through with that.

The medical education system as an entirety is just a sick joke on our mental health and anxiety.

Ridiculous.

I like your username

This whole system is so absurd. I feel like all the private resources are really to blame. With the cat out of the bag questions that used to be hard are now gimmes. If you look at old tests they are far more reasonable

The second issue is that NBMEs are actually very rote memorization based. Their own internal documentation says that they should not test esoteric facts but I felt that on step 2 there were far fewer questions that required critical thinking

Just took UWSA 1 today. Thought it was super hard while going through it (especially the first section) but somehow came away with a 253 which I'm happy about.

OB Gyn and surgery are my two weakest subjects. I have 11 days until my test. Does anyone have any recommendations for tackling these two subjects? Should I do one full read through of Pestana or something before my test? Or should I just keep doing UW questions?

Amboss qs for surgery and obgyn are solid ways to improve quick, do the shelf ones and CK ones

Guess I will hit yall with some results since reading this helped me.

Took test June 25th-ish, got score back like a week and a half ago.

Basically my only goal was 240+, with ideally being above 245. Anything above that was icing.

Did uworld .75x during 3rd year, but stopped doing uworld in January.
Reset uworld with about 5 weeks to go at the end of may, and completed 90% of uworld before test (end of June).
Did all of comquest in march/april during IM (DO student)
Never opened a book or watched an online video during 3rd year for studying purposes. I would just google search things on rotations and do uworld / comquest questions.

UW average on second-ish is pass was like 78%
Comquest avg = always in 80s, can't remember exact %
UWSA1 248
UWSA2 252
Real deal 249

While taking I basically thought WTF for most the test, but wasn't shook because I fully expected it based on hearing feedback haha. Just sat down and took the test and left. Didn't think about the test it until I got my test score back (about a month early which was weird).

Overall pretty stoked about my score. I know its not a 260 and is only a few points above average or whatever but the motivation to study was near zero and it was a grind just to do my questions every day. I didn't really care about being above or below my step 1 score as long as it was within like a couple points either way haha.

Probably wasn't / aren't stressed enough about this exam but whatever.

Moral to story trust your UWSAs and don't trip during or after the test cause it's really just a dumb test and rural FM pay's 300k+ in the midwest so even if you bomb it life is good lol.

Seriously though, don't trip.

Congrats!!! Awesome work!

I'm hoping I have the same mentality when I take it in a few days lol. Any last minute tips/things to look at or do for my last few days? My practice scores were similar to yours so I'm hoping I'll be able to crush it like you!
