Ivy League in med world only really applies to Harvard/Penn/Columbia + Cornell/Yale. Brown and Dartmouth aren’t that strong in med world.

Dartmouth is in the middle of nowhere which strikes it off the list of many medical students.

Seems like a solid list for first class. I’m guessing that Step scores were very high considering linear algebra, diff eq or other higher math requirements. Not many premeds take these courses unless they have natural academic aptitude or major in biomedical engineering

It’s not like NYU programs are the best in the city…. I doubt overwhelming NYU grads want to stay in the city more so than Cornell and Columbia grads. Stanford IM match list is a lot stronger. Stanford own IM program isn’t that strong either just like NYU.

I wish there were more matches back to New England (where I'm originally from) but overall it looked like a strong list.

I’m an NYU alum and I agree. The match list is very strong but not the best. Not even close to the Stanford match list.


That said, I doubt there’s any substantive difference in training between IM programs at NYU vs. Brigham. Stanford med students can probably put together a more competitive application because most spend an extra year for research or to otherwise buff their apps.

I know you are coming from a place of pride. Perhaps you are not aware of how strong NYU home programs are currently considered. For lack of a better resource, doximity reputation rankings this year has NYU ranked above Stanford in derm, emergency med, internal med, neurosurgery, neurology, ob gyn, ortho, plastics, psychiatry, radiology, surgery, and urology. In some cases it isn’t even close. Further, I’d offer the argument that NYU students are proven not to be lured by a “name.”

Boston must look really nice this time of year

I'm amazed that places like NYC, SF, Boston, and Seattle remain this popular for residency. Due to admissions inflation, med students are much older than they used to be. When you're 30+, you're just too old for that ish, and you've probably got a partner making some sort of income. I can't imagine wanting to keep renting or potentially even having roommates (NYC/SF) at this stage and in this economy.

In other cities like New Haven, Atlanta, Philly, Chicago, Baltimore, Durham, Nashville, Houston, etc... you could buy a very solid place for $30-40K down or at least rent somewhere that doesn't require you to schlep yourself to a laundromat after a 12 hour day. Not to mention having a car, parking, extra cash for conveniences. Having lived in NYC and Boston, life is just hard in these cities with low income, no car, and minimal free time.

Not sure why you would be amazed.....Some of the best program lie in Boston, SF and NYC, so "top residency programs" will always appeal to candidates, regardless of what cities they are in. What stats are you looking at that med students are "much" older? Maybe some older but to say much, is stretching any stat you have seen.

I will be an m1 next year. I’m trying to choose between Wayne, OUWB and MSU. I’m actually interested in Ophthalmology and also Cardiology.

i qualify my response a little bit. If you apply to Ophtho, both Oakland and Wayne have home departments and ophtho residencies. MSU does not. It means you’ll have to do away rotations for LOR and perhaps fight a bit harder.

It is for sure. OUWB tuition is almost 20k a year more expensive. I’m waiting to hear back for scholarships. If I don't get any scholarships from OUWB I wont attend. Bit lets just assume they do give me a scholarship and the money is almost the same. Which would you recommend then?

i qualify my response a little bit. If you apply to Ophtho, both Oakland and Wayne have home departments and ophtho residencies. MSU does not. It means you’ll have to do away rotations for LOR and perhaps fight a bit harder.

Yes, I actually went to the second look day of MSU this Friday and students were saying it would be difficult to be able to find research opportunities and LOR in ophthalmology. The reason I am also considering MSU is because my family lives in Grand Rapids.

Not sure why you would be amazed.....Some of the best program lie in Boston, SF and NYC, so "top residency programs" will always appeal to candidates, regardless of what cities they are in. What stats are you looking at that med students are "much" older? Maybe some older but to say much, is stretching any stat you have seen.

I'm just surprised that the location is a draw given the reality of residency (i.e., low pay, minimal free time, high stress).

Take two equally prestigious residencies, one in NYC and one in an affordable city, and typically the NYC residency is more competitive. If I have ~30 hours of non-working, non-sleeping time each week, I'd want to have an easy commute home and ample money for conveniences. Even with higher pay (~$75K), COL in NYC means you are barely scraping by unless you've got a spouse with significant income. In the cheaper cities, $60K is more than enough to pay down some loans, save for retirement or a home, and splurge on some time-saving luxuries when you have crazy weeks/rotations (e.g., grocery delivery, cleaning service, wash-and-fold, take out, a car, etc...).

Maybe I'm soured living car-less in a HCOL city on an MD/PhD stipend. Working/studying 70-80 hours/week is already exhausting, but adding the stress of unreliable public transit, schlepping my clothes to a laundromat weekly, making time to scrub my shower, kitchen, oven, and cooking almost all of my own meals has just left me completely burnt out.

To me, one of those situations just sounds so much better than the other. I guess I'm just surprised that it skews that opposite way. Not at all surprised MGH/BWH/UCSF are popular, but I'm surprised that programs like BI, Cornell, and Columbia tend to be far more popular than their prestige equivalents in cheaper cities.

Average age of graduation is ~29, and many specialties and work environments are de facto requiring more training hours (typically via previously unnecessary fellowships, but also through research years, "career development," etc...). Compared to Boomers, people are spending much more time in training these days.

I'm not going to die on this hill. Definitely not looking for an internet argument. Just voicing an opinion and wondering how many agree or disagree.

Working/studying 70-80 hours/week is already exhausting, but adding the stress of unreliable public transit, schlepping my clothes to a laundromat weekly, making time to scrub my shower, kitchen, oven, and cooking almost all of my own meals has just left me completely burnt out.

To me, one of those situations just sounds so much better than the other. I guess I'm just surprised that it skews that opposite way. Not at all surprised MGH/BWH/UCSF are popular, but I'm surprised that programs like BI, Cornell, and Columbia tend to be far more popular than their prestige equivalents in cheaper cities.

Average age of graduation is ~29, and many specialties and work environments are de facto requiring more training hours (typically via previously unnecessary fellowships, but also through research years, "career development," etc...). Compared to Boomers, people are spending much more time in training these days.

I'm not going to die on this hill. Definitely not looking for an internet argument. Just voicing an opinion and wondering how many agree or disagree.

Could be that a somewhat high proportion of med students have family money. Not really absurd to think that a resident with a 5000000 trust fund can live above his or her means in the big cities mentioned

I will be an m1 next year. I’m trying to choose between Wayne, OUWB and MSU. I’m actually interested in Ophthalmology and also Cardiology.
Between Wayne and OUWB which school do you think had a better match list?

Do you know the price difference yet? I agree Wayne is more established and I'd (probably) choose Wayne over OUWB all else equal. Although I know they had some situation with DMC that I don't know all the details of which could change my opinion.

However, if OUWB was significantly cheaper, would have no problem going there. But, at least when I applied, Wayne was the cheapest school in Michigan and I can't imagine that has changed.

I'm just surprised that the location is a draw given the reality of residency (i.e., low pay, minimal free time, high stress).

Tons of people have family ties to the NYC area, or are more comfortable in big cities/want easy access to the things they offer. If your commute/life is easy but it takes you hours to get to a major city, you're never gonna get to do city things on your limited time off. If you really like doing big city things, you want to be living in it already so you can enjoy it in your rare time off.

I know you are coming from a place of pride. Perhaps you are not aware of how strong NYU home programs are currently considered. For lack of a better resource, doximity reputation rankings this year has NYU ranked above Stanford in derm, emergency med, internal med, neurosurgery, neurology, ob gyn, ortho, plastics, psychiatry, radiology, surgery, and urology. In some cases it isn’t even close. Further, I’d offer the argument that NYU students are proven not to be lured by a “name.”

I know NYU derm, plastics, NS, GS, radiology, EM, PMR have been top programs for a long time. I’m sure other departments have climbed in recent years too.

I'm amazed that places like NYC, SF, Boston, and Seattle remain this popular for residency. Due to admissions inflation, med students are much older than they used to be. When you're 30+, you're just too old for that ish, and you've probably got a partner making some sort of income. I can't imagine wanting to keep renting or potentially even having roommates (NYC/SF) at this stage and in this economy.

In other cities like New Haven, Atlanta, Philly, Chicago, Baltimore, Durham, Nashville, Houston, etc... you could buy a very solid place for $30-40K down or at least rent somewhere that doesn't require you to schlep yourself to a laundromat after a 12 hour day. Not to mention having a car, parking, extra cash for conveniences. Having lived in NYC and Boston, life is just hard in these cities with low income, no car, and minimal free time.

It goes the other way too. A lot of people have significant others who have careers too. And career opportunities outside of medicine are better in the large metro areas. If your spouse is a scientist in biotech, you’re more likely to want to be in Boston, SFO, or San diego than Atlanta, Hanover,NH, or Nashville. If your spouse is an attorney who graduated from a top law school, you’re likely to end up in Boston, NYC, Chicago, LA or SFO.
