Hello everyone, but especially current applicants. We wanted to get the word out about NYMC OMFS as PASS is opening up to provide more information about our hidden gem of a program. When you think about northeast and New York City programs NYMC doesn’t come to mind for a lot of people but we believe we have a great program with tons of upside.

NYMC is a four-year, bread and butter focused program. We accept two residents a year, with one non-categorical intern. We cover two sites primarily: Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY and Metropolitan Hospital on the Upper East Side. We operate busy dentoalveolar clinics daily at both sites, along with facial trauma every third week at WMC and 24/7 at Metropolitan. We also cover the oral surgery clinic at Tuoro Dental School on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Pros of our program:

-     Great exodontia experience. You will spend several months running the Metropolitan clinic your first year. This is a busy point and pull clinic with no shortage of extractions. Its an excellent experience for building up speed, efficiency, and proficiency right out of the gate. First years also get early exposure to sedations as you will be performing several (heavily supervised) sedations a week as an intern.

-     We get great trauma exposure without it being overwhelming for the service. Our third year residents are acting chiefs at Metropolitan Hospital and as such you will be cutting any trauma cases that come in. We split facial trauma at Westchester with plastics and ENT, and despite being a level one trauma center we get a very reasonable amount of trauma cases that give great experience without needing to do bedside wire downs or have excessive add-ons that take time away from other cases.

-     Fantastic orthognathic schedule. We cut multiple cases a month with several attendings (including plastics attendings) at both of our sites with plenty of multi-piece Leforts. Your fourth year will also include a month rotation with Dr. Aziz in Hackensack where you will do little else besides cut orthognathics every day.

-     We have a full time cosmetics attending in Dr. Alessi at Westchester, so we get great experience with blephs, injectables, rhytids, and more. This is really a huge perk if you are interested in this aspect of OMFS that many programs aren’t able to offer.

Ultimately we are very proud of our program and feel that we have lots to offer prospective applicants. If you’re interested in a dentoalveolar focused with broad scope program with ample resident leadership opportunities we could be the place for you. Feel free to reach out with any questions and somebody will be happy to answer

MedStar Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University
(MWHC) OMFS Program Update
Washington, D.C.
IG @dc.omfs

At MWHC OMFS, we offer a comprehensive, broad-scope program exclusively on a four-year track. Our primary clinical site is MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC), located in the heart of Washington, D.C. We also maintain active surgical rotations at nearby institutions, including Children’s National and the VA Medical Center, both conveniently located across the street, and the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.

While the majority of our graduates pursue careers in private practice, many retain hospital privileges, and those who remain local often refer orthognathic and trauma cases back to our service. Our clinical scope encompasses facial trauma, orthognathic surgery, benign pathology, dentoalveolar procedures, TMJ surgery, and includes a dedicated one-month rotation at a cosmetic surgery center. We work with our ENT colleagues to manage microvascular reconstructive cases.

Application for Three (3) categorical positions will be accepted through formal application ADEA PASS, 2025-2026 application cycle, and selection through the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program.

Faculty:
  • Dr. Ravi Agarwal, DDS (Program Chair) – Dr. Agarwal brings a broad and versatile skill set to the program, but he is particularly well-regarded for his expertise in orthognathic surgery (performing 1–3 cases per week), benign pathology, and maxillofacial trauma.
  • Dr. Saif Abdulateef, DMD, FACS (Program Director) – A fellowship-trained TMJ surgeon, Dr. Abdulateef’s practice focuses on a wide range of TMJ treatments, in addition to orthognathic surgery and benign pathology.
  • Dr. Kalpakam Shastri, DDS (Associate Professor) – Dr. Shastri leads an outstanding dentoalveolar practice and is deeply committed to teaching residents proper and efficient exodontia techniques.
  • Dr. Sarina Dodhia, DMD (Associate Professor) – A graduate of our own residency program (Class of 2024), Dr. Dodhia is quickly building a thriving clinical practice with a high procedural volume. She is passionate about surgery and actively engages residents in the operating room—an invaluable and enthusiastic addition to our team.
  • In addition to our core faculty, we are supported by approximately 20 private practice surgeons who take call for trauma and infections, and frequently bring orthognathic, TMJ, and benign pathology cases to our service.

Has anyone applied to mount sinai? At 5:10 pm the day after I applied, I got an email saying that I’m missing my supplemental app and committee letter, with the last line asking if I want to still be considered or if I want to withdraw my app (I just applied yesterday ??) lol

Just curious if the program coordinator individually sends that email to people or if that’s automated for everyone

I got the same, all of those supplements are due October 1st per the coordinator. It is a pretty extensive list so start sooner than later.
