SUPPLEMENTAL GPA CALCULATIONS:

Question! I was reviewing my AMCAS GPA numbers and noticed that for my senior year, AMCAS took my capstone engineering design course, and an advanced german literature course and is placing them in the "Supplemental" bucket. At first I had no issues with that, until I saw that Supplemental includes AP, CLEP, and Pass Fail courses. What the h*ll??? Why would they take a capstone engineering course and characterize it as the equivalent of a CLEP? Am I missing something here????????

My class was an english. I think AMCAS will fix it themselves so don't worry.

Two questions...
1. I took and received my EMT license through a local organization which is affiliated with the Fire Department. Should I pursue obtaining information to attach to my academic part of my application?
2. The "where you see yourself and medicine in 10 years" essay is kiling me...any ideas on where I can get an idea on how other students went about writing this.

Thanks to any help offered.

Can someone help with these questions,

1) I withdrew from a course so for course type I mark on withdrawal but for OT grade do I write "W" as the grade or do I leave it blank

2)Experiences section: for contact name do I write the name of the person I worked in with in Lab or the name of the principal investigator

3)What is the course classification for an Honors Research course. Also, do I mark honors for course type.

4) Marking incomplete on the course type, do I put an I for the OT grade.

5) For course classification, let's say you were an chemistry lab assistant so do you classify this under chemistry or education

2. Write the name of person whom you would like to be contacted if they were to call the lab.
3. In what field was the research conducucted? Biology, chemistry, etc.
4. Yes
5. Was this a class you took in which you got a grade? If this was a lab assistant job or volunteer position it should go in post-secondary experiences.

You guys should really print out the instruction book they have as a PDF file. It saved me a bunch of time and I had relatively few questions.

Tips:

1. Remember...Biochem is a CHEMISTRY class and not a bio class
2. If you had any labs that satisfied upper division writing requirements, it qualifies as the LAB/LEC course
3. Don't forget to check off the box that says "Current/Future" for classes you are currently taking and plan to take.

These were things I came across when doing apps (submitted yesterday! yeah!). I am relatively impressed at how problem-free the process was, the lack of internet traffic, and the depth of the instruction book.

Hope this helps!

3. In what field was the research conducucted? Biology, chemistry, etc.
In a biology laboratory. It was part of an Honors Thesis course. So do I classify it as Biology and mark Honors

5. Was this a class you took in which you got a grade? If this was a lab assistant job or volunteer position it should go in post-secondary experiences.
It was a class that I signed up for. It is on my transcripts. I was a chem lab assistant so do I classify as chem or education

Question:
For transcript request, do I need to send transcripts to me as well as AMCAS or just AMCAS

Experiences: I have been playing the drums for a year so do I classify it under EC/Hobbies. If so, what do I need for contact name, etc...

Experiences: Under artistic endevor, can I put down an art class that I took that was not part of school

Yes you can put drums down as a hobby with a contact of yourself. If you feel that the art class was significant you can add it as an artistic endeavour.

If you want a copy of your transcripts you can have a copy sent to yourself if you want. AMCAS will only accept transcripts that come directly from your undergraduate school(s).

AP courses are *not* supplemental. They are considered credit.

Hey, I don't know if this ? has been answered, but how does AMCAS verifty future courses? Does it have to be listed on your transcript? If it isn't listed there, what should i do?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi!

Couple of questions:
1) If I submit my application all done and pay 150 + 30/school.. and decide later on to add more schools.. (before the deadline)... can i do that? and will they charge me just 30/school or 150??

2) Can I make changes to the schools attended list after i submit it? b/c i'm going to my state school in the fall to fulfill pre-med requirements... i need to add that in the fall..
If i can, then, after i certify and re-submit again, will they send my file to all the schools again??

3) do we need to give them transcripts from ALL the schools? for ex. i took two classes at harvard b/c MIT has a cross-registration program..
but it was listed in my MIT transcript...
I probably don't need to get a harvard transcript, right?
Also.. should i list Harvard as a school attended? b/c i did take classes there, but i didn't get a degree or have a major..

Thanks!!!
=)

A couple of answers...

1) Yes, you can add schools later. They will charge you $30 for each school you add.

2) You cannot add to 'Schools Attended' after you submit (or at least you could not last year). I would add that school now and just put all the courses down as future coursework. This may make things a little more difficult as AMCAS will then expect a transcript from that school. You may have to contact them to explain the situation. If you don't have the required courses listed on the AMCAS, the medical schools might find that strange.

3) I think you could go either way on this. If you put Harvard down as a school attended, then you will be required to get a transcript from them. If they don't have a transcript there, then I would just leave it as MIT. According to the AMCAS manual you must input all post-secondary courses taken regardless if you got a degree, had a major, or even if you did not receive credit.

1. For Awards/Honors/Recognitions, what do you put down as contact details? I have all my awards/honors/etc.. under one experience, is it ok to put N/A (Not applicable) or leave it blank?

2. And for certifications like EMT, CPR..etc.. or Research training/rescue services training, what would you put down as contact details? Is N/A or blank appropriate?

got a question:

1)if we're not going to be entering med school until 2003. and i plan to teach the MCAT starting in october part time- should i enter that in as a post secondary experience-- even though it hasn't happened yet????

2)if i have alot of AP credit, so i was a sophomore coming . Is STATUS- about credit hours- like putting down SO JR SR SR for the 4 years, or is it supposed to just refer to the year? so if you went for 4 years you put down FR, SO, JR, SR regardless of status?

Essay Truncated Problem: When saved, the last dozen letters or so got cut off.

Solution: Try using a different browser. I had that unsolvable problem with IE, but Netscape fixed it.

Laviddee,

The consensus has been don't put future exp in now, but do update individual school later. And status is based on # of credits.

I have a question about post-secondary experiences...someone may have addressed this, but i'm going to do it again.
if you worked at the same place for two summers, what would you put for the "Dates" sections. would u just put the starting date of the first summer, and the ending date of the second? the only thing is that they may interpret it as you did it all year. could u just clarify in the experience description? or should u put the two summers as two different experiences all together?
please help!
thanks

I ended up putting my undergrad summer research program down as 2 different experiences, because of the date thing. They were two completely different research projects, though, so I felt like it was ok to list them as two separate experiences. If it is the exact same experience both years, I don't see anything wrong with only entering it once and clarifying in the description that it was only during the summers (e.g. 6/95 - 9/96, 40 hrs)

Answers to a couple:

About Status: there was a post about this and basically, you put in the status as if it were the year number (so even if your credits made you a SO, you still put FR if it's your first year. MAkes sense, right?) The exception, I believe, is if you have large gaps in your education. In that case I think you go by units.

Teaching MCAT: I am currently teaching Princeton Review Physics and I AM NOT including it in my post secondary experiences. It's a personal thing for me (I sort think that test prep courses are a way to exclude people from med school in a way)...BUT they pay really well, so I sold out. Anyway, it's up to you. If you feel that it is important, I would put it. The only thing is October is pretty far away from now and so you will not have much to say about your experience.

2. Is certifications on the list of Post-Secondary Experiences? If it is, then I think it would be Ok to put N/A. If you work/volunteer as an EMT then you would use the supervisor's name.

Hello everyone--I have a few quick questions and it would be stupendous if I could get some information--

1. When exactly does one send fees to AMCAS for the primary application to the various schools?

2. When you guys print out the application, does it print your full name or shortened name (if you indicated that you went by something else)?

I apologize if these questions have been addressed earlier, but thanks in advance for your help--and good luck!

when you submit your primary application, you pay online by credit card for each school all at once. Later on you can designate more schools and pay more money if you want to.

Thanks mpp. That's very nice of you. I think I will put N/A as contact detail for those experiences.

so AMCAS only takes plastic? no checks?

hmm...

so AMCAS only takes plastic? no checks?

hmm...

Last year there was a check option -- I didn't use it, but I think you print out something to send in with your check. If you're paying by credit card, be sure to check with your bank/credit card company that you're only charged once. Last year, many people were charged multiple times.

hi everyone--first of all, thanks for answering my previous questions...I have one more--when you guys print out your application, under supplemental hours, is anything showing up? On mine, everything shows up as 0, and I have taken 1 class pass/fail and I have AP credits on my transcript--any info would be groovy indeed. gracias.

questions (both have been posted in other threads, but i thought i'd try this one, too) 😕

1) Where can I find my MCAT ID # if I don't have my score report any longer?

2) Why are there 0's for all blanks concerning post-secondary school finances? Is it because i said that i'm not disadvantaged? if i needed aid, does that make me disadvantaged (that seems ridiculous, but who knows...)?

Thanks!

chopsuey--that section shows up as all 0's if you answer "no" to the disadvantaged question...hope this helps--

Thanks for answer...but now i'm wondering if i should enter myself as disadvantaged? they can't expect everyone who is on financial aid to enter in "disadvantaged," can they?? i called AMCAS, and the guy was just like, "i guess it's better to enter it than to not." not very helpful!! any thoughts?

part of the disadvantaged section asks you to write about why you think that schools should consider you disadvantaged, so i think that you really need to figure out whether or not YOU believe you are at a disadvantage compared to other applicants. it needs to be convincing and substantial, but i think that the guy was trying to say that you should give the schools the chance to rule you out before you do it yourself.

but i do want to caution that you need to be sure that you really truly believe that you are disadvantaged (i hate that word!) for some social, economical, or whatever reason

good luck!

I volunteered at a Nursing Home visiting patients, wheeling them around, etc. A similar experience in a hospital would be considered medical/clinical I think, but I am not sure about this. Has anyone done something similar?

Hi, I am having a problem entering grades. I know there was a problem with the +/- grades, but my B+'s come out OK and are calculated in my GPA, but I have a few A+'s and they aren't calculated. Should I just put those grades as A's since they are calculated the same, or will that confuse those AMCAS folks? Thanks!

I just submitted. If I want to add some schools later, will that delay my app?

I submitted today but it says my app is on hold??? it says it's waiting for documents, but it does show that all of my transcripts are received.

Does this happen to everyone? Does it say hold until it's verified?

I am seeing a lot of AAMC questions so felt like bumping up this thread.

Tweetie

I will be doing an Undergrad Thesis, a one year project. I'm not sure how to classify this course in the AMCAS application. I will be doing my thesis on a science topic, so should I classify it as "Biology" even though it's not a Bio course? Also it's not lecture only, lab only, or lecture & lab. We work on our own with the mentor. So which one should I pick for that part? Please help. Thanks!

Hi,
I'm getting ready to finally submit but before that, I have one last question.

Since we're allowed to input anticipated coursework, doe anyone know if we can also input anticipated extracurriculars? I'm planning on doing research and shadowing a doctor this coming year. Do I include that into my app?

Thanks

medical22,
i'd put it as a bio course if it's through the bio department and about a biology topic. i put my chemistry thesis down as a chemistry course. can't remember for the lecture/lab thing. i probably put lab only for the first semester (all research) and lecture only for the second semester (all writing) even though there was no lecture involved.

J! Sweetie I PMed you back your revised PS!!! Did you get it?! Let me know!

Anyways, last year we couldn't put 'anticipated EC's' so I don't know about this year....😱 🙁 ...maybe I should just stick with the Essay help thread...

questions!

-When you guys wrote the description of post-secondary experiences, did you do it in 1st person format?

- Do you think I could get away with listing Differential Equations under 'other' to avoid it from being calculated into my BCMP?

I didn't do my post-secondaries in 1st person, but it might work to do it that way. I used bullets and said things like "shadowed doctors in a London hospital".

Come on now. Not putting it down as BCPM isn't really fair to others who were 100% honest in completing their application. If it's in the Math department, AMCAS is bound to catch it. If it's through another non-science department, you might get away with it but probably not.

lola, did you list multiple 'subexperiences' under one 'experience'? (did that make any sense 😕 ) Since you said you used bullet format to describe your experiences, I thought it involved various experiences......I'm pretty bummed that they let us list only 15.
ex: shadow doctors under one experience, then the list of all the doctors you've shadowed?

hmmm... not sure if i understand your question.
i listed 13 activities i thought were important. i chose not to put activities down that didn't seem all that important. one activity i put down was participating in a premedical program in england. i said i was a participant for the title and that it was unpaid work experience (i think.. can't really remember). then i listed, in bullet format, the activities associated with it. e.g. shadowed doctors full-time in a london hospital for 3 weeks, attended weekly seminars about the nhs for 5 months, etc...
if you shadowed a lot of doctors, you could probably put that down as 1 experience and put each sub-experience as a bullet. since they only let you put down 15, i certainly wouldn't waste 3 activities on shadowing doctors if i shadowed 3 doctors.
hope that helps 😉
