What do you put for "type" for shadowing a physician? (Post secondary experience)

This may be a stupid question...
Under secondary experience, "title," does that mean my title? Or?

Soda Pop--

For shadowing a physician, I put "medical volunteer community service" (or however it's listed).

and yes, "title" is your title.

i put it as volunteer b/c i was doing things for the doctor and staff while i was there. getting patients from waiting room, getting vitals, getting patient history... that sort of thing. i figured that if i hadn't been doing all that, then someone else would have had to do it, and they would have gotten paid to do it. so i put it as a volunteer experience.

My personal statement is coming out as one big paragraph. How do you make indentations? (I know someone posted an answer to this problem but I can't find that post) :p

Soda Pop,
I think I read somewhere that you have to press enter twice so that the system knows it's another paragraph. But please don't quote me on it since I can't remember the source. Maybe try it and see if it works without counting as extra characters. Let us know. Some of us STILL haven't finished the personal statement yet. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Thanks.

Personal Statement Characters Cut-Off:

I can type all of my 5294-character essay into the alloted space, but when I look at the print preview or re-enter the essay after having it saved, only 5270 characters are shown.

Anyone has the same problem or know why is it happening?

What would you do if your citation for publications is more than the space allowed (510 chars). Mine is ~1290 chars. I'm a bit unwilling to disregard any one of those pubs, including the ones that are in preparation.

I've already put them in the format that's usually appeared in C.V.

RT•••••I am having the same issue. I think it might be best if we put down our hypotheses/observations of the paper. I don't think it should take that much space. Plus, if you leave them a bit in the dark (eg: just tell them hypotheses) it might be a good interview topic. :) Any other suggestions? •••••I've decided to split my pubs into two entries, though I'm still seeking for advice. I have "primary author" and another "non-primary author" entries. It's only because I need more space than allowed for all of the pubs citation. I'm not sure whether this's a good idea????

hey RT i had the same problem ... except my abitrary cut off was 5294 (my essay was exactly 5300); however, it was eventually fixed after i left it alone for a few days. a useless answer, but somehow it worked without me doing anything. i doubt calling amcas would help that much either, cause its an individual/server/app problem it seems.

I don't get what you're saying. How many pubs do you have total? I have 4 and one conference, and I think i will keep it as five different experiences. i have about a line or two, along with the citation in each desc. section which seems to work perfectly for me.

I have a ? -- what are you doing for pubs that are only submitted or are accepted, but not yet in print?? do you say "submitted" or "accepted" ?? so far, I only have one in print. Rest all are either submitted or accepted to come out end of this year.

What do you think?
Tweetie

Tweetie,

For the submitted ones, put (submitted) after the last period of the citation. For the accepted ones, put (in press). And for those that are currently in preparation, put (in preparation).

For my two primary-author ones, I'm thinking of putting them into one experience (~290 chars, 1 proceeding). The other five non-primary-author, I currently have them as another experience (~495 chars, I only put the first author and "et al."). The first two belong to an old research project. The latter five "pubs" aren't really pubs 'cause one is submitted and four are currently in preparation. I figure that it's good to put them anyway.

I think you could put pubs as different experiences (out of 15) as long as you have available slots or you don't have space to put them into just one experience.

Hi everyone,
I can't believe this thread has grown so large. :)
I have a question that I hope someone can help me out with. From my understanding, we're suppose to guess which classes we will be taking in the future and input that into AMCAS. Does this also hold true for post-bac? This summer and into the next academic year, I will be taking post-bac classes to help my GPA. Can I submit/certify my application now and then update AMCAS with the new grades later on? Or will these classes not play a role in the Adcomm's consideration of my application?
Thanks.

JZZZZZZZs -
Go ahead and put in any classes that you plan to take, post bac or undergrad. I think it can only help!

Yes, put in future coursework. However, I would advise against updating AMCAS with grades later. They take forever to get that information to schools. Instead, update the schools individually be sending them a letter with a copy of your latest transcript update and explain why you are interested in that school. This is a good way to be sure that your file is not left at the bottom of the pile. It is also good material for use in update letters or letters of intent if you land on any waitlists.

stupid question...how do you actually submit once you're done typing everything in? maybe i should read the handbook

I totally forgot about putting future coursework down. So do I just put them down under coursework, and then not have a mark in the OT mark box?

AMCAS will not release your application to schools unless they verify all transcripts for all courses entered as completed.

If you have just forgotten to enter the future coursework but have already submitted the application, I would not worry about it unless you are missing any of the requisite courses for medical school (biology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, english, and mathematics).

thanks mpp, i didn't submit yet. I was just not sure where to put the future courses, do I just put them along with all the other courses under coursework, and not have a mark for it?

mpp,
When you suggested sending the transcript updates to each individual school, do you mean just to the schools I end up waitlisted at, or every school I apply to? Wouldn't it definitely be more of an advantage to get them in before they decide who to interview? Thanks for clarifying. :)

I mean for anything that you happen to be waiting for. If some school has not yet sent you a secondary (some can be slow), has not yet invited you for an interview, has not yet offered you an acceptance, or has placed you on the waitlist, it is a good idea to send them a brief update with grades, recent activities if applicable, and reasons why you are interested in that school.

Do note that some schools expressly discourage sending in extra materials so be sure to check the school's admission web-site to see if this is discouraged.

Not entirely sure how you should put an A.A. degree awarded while in high school. My best guess is that if a transcript exists that says XXXXXXXXX College than I think you would include it with your post-secondary education, even if it was completed during high school. If the transcripts that exist are from your high school then I would not include that coursework on the AMCAS application. Or, I suppose you could put it under your Freshman year, like an AP course. Does AP course credit show up on your college/university transcript?

mpp,

the degree was awarded from XXXX College, and is a *real* college degree. All of the hours were earned while *technically* in high school, yet AT the college and college credit. I'm listing it under "high school" seeing as the college credits were awarded at time of high school graduation.

what is the AMCAS phone #?

I spoke to the vice president of my comm college tonight..she told me to put it down under "AP credits" since officially the credit wasn't awarded unti high school grad. If AMCAS doesnt like it, the school will talk to them about it.

yay

in other words, I dont put it under HS, but as fresh, soph, etc.

AAAH! I can't get my personal comments to work! When I paste it in, it's fine, under 5300, and all good. Then I click "save" and all my " ' " turn to ?, and the last 15 characters or so are lost!!!! Can anyone help me with this bizarre problem. Tried it with both Microsoft and Netscape, adn the exact same thing happened.

(My appologies if this has been previously discussed)

(My appologies if this has been previously discussed)•••••I went in manually and changed all the "?" back to " ' " and when I printed it, it turned out fine. About your other problem, I had about 5280 characters and they seemed to have accepted every character.

Jadeite...
I was wondering if you can help me with my problem regarding posting the personal statement...
I can't seem to make any indentations for my paragraphs on AMCAS. Do you know how to solve this? (I know I posted this message before, but I didn't get any solutions; so, just wondering if you have a solution) :)

sodapop-
to put indentations or to get rid of the question marks-- you are probably transferring from microsoft word. so do this instead... select the entire text in microsoft word (ctrl + A)
then copy it (ctrl + C)
and then open up microsoft notepad- it's in start-&gt;programs&gt;accessories&gt;notepad
then paste it in there.
You can then create indentations in notepad, and then click the edit menu, click select all, copy and paste it then into amcas.. and you'll see your indentation and your " won't turn into a ?
ok?
dave

Thanks Dave, I'll try that!! :D

Jadeite -
I had the same problem with the ?s and also manually entered quotation marks.

ALSO, any time you hit return, I noticed it counted as 2 characters, not 1. Somehow I had my ps at exactly 5300 in Word, but when it went into the box, it also cut off the last 15 characters or so. This was because of the double character effect caused by hitting return for each new paragraph. Had to trim a few words from the beast to make it fit. Hope that stifles your frustration for the moment!

(My appologies if this has been previously discussed)•••••In order to answer my own question for the benefit of others - I knocked it down to 5250 and it worked ok, ?s and all. I two tried to manually fix it when it was at about 5280, and it just didn't work. Very bizarre, but it's ok now. Probably didn't need those sentences anyway. :)

question question:
ok so i was in a summer biomedical research program where the school gave me money to do research..

what's my title??? Research fellow?
what is a title for someone that is on this type of program.

my title for doing research during the normal school year - i put down as research assistant-- but if we get money from a grant for research-- are we something different?

thanks
dave

Well, I have submitted my amcas app, only to find that after loggin in again it says my app is being held for "supporting docs." Then right below this it says that both my transcripts were received. What other supporting docs could it possibly be referring to? What should I do?

These would require supporting docs. Did you tell them you're disadvantaged, or a member of a native american tribe? These probably require supporting docs. Let us know what the problem turns out to be, as it will likely help other people. thanks! :)

dave•••••Just call yourself a post-doctoral research fellow.•••••huhhhhh??? is he getting his PhD? I think you should leave it as "principal investigator of research project" if YOU are the person in whose name the school has donated the money. If you're doing a collaboration with somebody else, you'd be a research assistant.

For grades in pass/fail classes do we write "pass" or "p" as our grade?

I have a couple of questions:

1. Does AMCAS automatically add MCAT scores to the application? (I didn't see a score insert box)

2. If I retake my MCAT in August and let AMCAS know that, will AMCAS hold onto my application till I get my August scores before sending it out to the designated schools? Or will they go ahead and send out my application with my Apirl scores and let the schools know that I will be retaking my MCAT in Augst?

ok for those of you who were worried about how your essay might show up as one large paragraph- i talked to amcas today and they said that it will not show up like that.. they just added the 'print out application' feature last minute as people were asking for it, and so it comes out like that, but the schools don't seeit as one big paragraph- rather they see it the way it's shown online.

2. I think that if you say that you will be taking the August exam, the application will be held until the scores are released in October. However, I may be wrong...someone please verify this.

According to the guy I spoke with, he said that AMCAS submits the application to the designated schools as soon as they finish processing it, regardless of one retaking it in August. However, each school may differ in whether they choose to wait for the August MCAT to send out the secondaries.

Hope that helps. :)
