Hey guys, are most of the rentals there year lease, or are there month to months? (i head out there next week to do some lookin')

As for the finaid, I haven't done anything since it came to me.
Tomorrow/weekend (now that my final is over and done with) I'll take another look and do whatever it tells me to do... procrastination is my downfall...

hey,

has anybody who is doing financial aid at Case filled out this fabled "master promissory note" for federal money borrowed through Case? I have not heard a word from them on this issue since I did the entrance interview.

exmike, where are you still on the waitlist at?

Judd

Judd: Mount Sinai

I have a gut feeling about Case though so I'm almost sure I'll pick Case over MSSM; there is still that small chance I'll waver though.

Mr Redd. I didnt turn in the finaid either. I think I'll look over it again this weekend.

Mike...interestingly enough, my interviewer at Case went to Mount Sinai. And look where he chose to teach...

The impression I got is that it's negotiable. Many landlords will initially say the lease is year long, but if you prod them they usually give in a little. Lease from Aug - June seems to be acceptable to many.

Errr... lemme guess... USUHS? :meanie:

USUHS = Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Thanks. When I left Baltimore mid year, I was stuck in a year lease. Ended up paying alot for that.

Ok...I just talked to Wanda Rollins in Fin Aid, and heres the scoop:
they haven't released the loan applicant info to sallie mae yet, so we can't proceed with the master promissory note. over the weekend, the fin aid office is changing over their system, so they will be releasing the info after that. She told me that within a week or ten days, we will get an email directing us to the site, where we will fill out the note online.

for ppl who are taking out private loans--they don't really process them until later, so if you are checking the status of your private loan and it's showing nothing, don't worry. she said that they want to give as many students as possible the chance to get case loan money first, so they wait until july or august to process the private loans.

Me too. Screw the Time Group.

This is probably obvious, but I'll say it anyway. Be upfront with the landlord and get it in writing. The lease should list the time frame that all parties have agreed to and the penalties for breaking it. I hate nasty surprises.

hey everyone,

i'm now about 90% sure i'm going to case. i'm flying out there next weekend to look for apartments- is anyone else going next weekend? does anyone know if montlack and other companies with property around case give tours on saturdays? looking forward to seeing you all in a couple months!

I know that Montlack, A-Z, and University Circle Inc give Saturday tours. Call ahead of time to make an appointment.
good luck

I'm going in two weeks to check out places. Gimme a holla about what you find.

Still looking for...

Roommate, shoes off indoors, clean, non-smoking; live within walking distance to school or driving distance - no preference, (although I don't think many med students smoke right?) willing to pay up to 700 or so per month.

90% sure I'm going to Case

Speaking of bad habits:

I'm working my fat ass off to lose about 20 pounds before school starts - plus I'm short and bald. Oh yea, I'm a lady killer!!!!!!!

Anyway, today is June 01. I started this hellish idea about two weeks ago, and am now about 185 (5'7"). I want to be 165 by August 1. That's still too god damned fat - but it's better than 190, which is what I was about two weeks ago. Baby steps, I guess. If I can reach 165, I figure i can coast to 160 (hell, when I hit 180, I just coasted to 190 - why not in reverse   ).

The goal is to limit intake to 1500 calories a day and do a 26 mile ride EVERY DAY, rain or whatever. According to this website -

http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist.htm

I can burn 863 calories an hour (I average 15 miles per hour on the road) and 26 miles takes me about an hour and half/hour 40 or so. That's about 1300 a day. You have to burn 3600 calories to lose a pound. Assuming I burn 2000 on a regular day, and I keep to 1500 a day intake, that's 500 + 1300 = 1800 a day burned. That's one pound lost every two days. So, in theory, i can lose 30 pounds in the two months before school (give or take). 20 is my goal.

Anyway - if I lose the weight, I'll think about doing something about all the ugly.

Judd

If I may make a suggestion Judd.... Go for 15 in two months, not 30.
That would be 2 per week (instead of the insane 4), a heathier and more sustainable amount. Even 1 per week would be impressive... slow I know, but you'll still get there and will be less likely to run back up right after.

Hey Judd, Mr. Reddly is right...4lb/wk is insane and completely unrealistic if you're talking about fat loss. 1-2 lb/wk is pretty much the standard fat loss possible. (2lb. = 7000 calorie deficeit per week). So, making realistic goals will help keep you from getting discouraged. Secondly, I tell people not to worry too much about the numbers on the scale...go by how your clothes fit. The reasoning behind that is this...by increasing your exercise you should be gaining muscle mass. Muscle is more dense than fat and therefore weighs more...so you can actually see an increase in weight, even if you've dropped body fat and inches off your waist, etc. That, and weight varies greatly with hydration levels, so the numbers on the scale can be deceiving depending on how hydrated you are.

Biking is a great idea for exercise, however, you might want to vary your workout routine just a bit so that you don't get bored...besides, your upper body might appreciate some attention as well. Try lifting weights 3 days per week as well as doing some cardio work that day (jog, swim, walk uphill, circuit train, cardio machines, etc.) if you have access to a gym. By increasing your overall muscle mass, you increase your basal metabolic rate and subsequently burn more calories at rest (always a bonus!).

Lastly, with diet...just be sensible about it...have things in moderation. I try to eat 5 small meals/day...keeps the energy levels up and I'm never hungry...besides it keeps my metabolism busy and actually increases it (another way to passively burn more calories).

I could go on for quite a while, but if you have questions drop me a line (I do some personal training in my spare time). Good Luck!

Hi guys,

I'm not talking about 4 pounds per week. I'm trying to lose 20 pounds in 8 weeks. That's only 2.5 pounds a week, not 4. Four is unrealistic on many levels. As you are aware, this is about .5 pounds more than the generally accepted maximum weightloss on a weekly basis. But, even if I can get close, I'll be happy.

Judd

OK now, that was STUPID!!!
... I just completed the entrance counseling...

If you default on a student loan which of the following are true:
a) the entire amount of your loan becomes due immediately, and you may be required to pay attorney fees
b) your wages and tax refunds can be garnished and your assets seized
c) all of the above

The answer they want was c, except in the text, it says "the entire amount of your loan CAN become due immediately". Therefore, a is NOT correct!!! Nor is C!!!!
Stupid test.

Another thing they put in one of the questions was about consolidation... Basically, they want you to understand that consolidation is bad because although it will lower your monthly payments, you'll pay more money over the long run because you can spread it out over more years... hmmmm... Is that basically SalliMae saying "don't switch lenders on us, or you'll regret it!"?

Ok, enough ranting... for now...

BTW, I'll be in Cleveland tomorrow night with my sis. How's the weather?

It actually didn't take all that long... The skull was downloaded off the internet,
the ground is just a plane with an enviornment mod (duplicated as a bump map), and the All Access Pass is just a box that was smoothed and an image map applied (partially taken from a screen shot of the SDN logo... But I enjoyed making it... And it was an excuse to procrastinate on my letter writing. 😀 🙁

Or do you mean the fact that I keep changing it? 😳

Ok, so since it says "Please return this form to CRWU SOM Financial Aid Officr as soon as possible" but I can't check the box that says "...and have completed Steps 1 and 2" because I can't proceed with the master promissary note, do I just sit on this thing, sign it and send it back without checking the box, or what????

does anyone know when we're going to get official word from case regarding starting dates and such? you'd think we'd have gotten SOMETHING by now.

It has been very pleasant temperature wise, but it rains often (but each time it only lasts less than an hour) this couple weeks. So if you plan to walk around, be sure to bring a small umbrella with ya!

Thanks. I'll have to bring my official Case SOM umbrella with me and do some advertising for the school

Ya, it's probably the 7th-8th ish... That's the week that fin aid will be dispersed. The issue though is that that is comming up pretty darn fast and still with nothing official saying "Congrats! School starts on _____, be sure to have _____ for classes...."

Any idea when that might happen?

Thanks for the post BTW! Cool to hear from an alumni. 🙂

When I spoke to Mrs. English last month, she said orientation 8/5, classes 8/6, and white coat ceremony 8/8. Nothing is set in stone but it probably won't change.

i thought orientations usually lasted like a week so they could ease us in and let us "bond". I guess they like the rude awakening method.

Even though classes start on 8/6, I don't expect much to be accomplished that first week. The administration has to realize from years of experience that the class needs to bond and that takes time and team buidling exercises. The real stuff should start on the following Monday, 8/9.

Hey All:

Finally decided on Case yesterday, after 2 months of flip-flopping, so add me to that list or whatever.

Now to sell my house in Paradise (Portland, OR) and find and apartment in Cleveland.

Can't wait to meet you on whatever day it is we'll meet.

when I was a little kid, I was swimming in the deep end of a wave pool when the waves suddenly came on. My life flashed before my eyes, and I was certain I'd die. after inhaling approximately 5 liters of water, I managed to tumble to side of the pool like a piece of driftwood at high tide, and scrambled up the ladder like a waterlogged rat, gasping for dear life as I did. I think the first day of school will be like that 😀

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to say congratulations to everybody who is coming to Case next year. I'm a current Case med student who just finished my 1st year here. I came about this thread randomly when I was doing a google search for something else and figured I can try to be as useful as possible if you have any questions about Case, Cleveland, or anything like that and want opinions. Also, I think they're doing something this year where they're sending out contact info for current students you can call with any questions about Case, so if you're feeling no love from Case bc of their lack of a calendar, hopefully this will make it a little better and give you someone to contact (FYI....I can tell you that for our year, they were extremely slow about getting us any sort of official calendar out and it looks like that unfortunately hasn't changed this year (even though we complained about it!).

About the start date, they did actually release the year 2 schedule a few weeks ago and we are starting on Monday, 8/9. If it's anything like our year, that probably means that like oldtimer said, year 1 is starting on Thursday, 8/5, classes on 8/6, white coat on 8/8.

In terms of orientation, they do try to help you with class-bonding and easing you into it. The first 2 or 3 weeks of school consist of a course called Fundamentals of Medical Decision Making (FMDM). There's a lot of group exercises in there and it culminates with a group project. I guess officially the course is supposed to be a type of biostats course, but really its not heavy material like you might have taken in college or a master's program. In the afternoons, they have a bunch of orientation stuff which is annoying but there's free food, so that's good. Over the course of those few weeks, they organize group outings to bars and baseball games or things like that, so there's definitely chances to meet people.

Once FMDM is over, Biochem starts and I guess that is when it kinda hits the fan, but obviously that varies from person to person and depends on your background (I did not come from a science background before med school). Anyways, I just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who got in or is coming and feel free to ask any questions that might make life easier coming here!

CCLCM and OHSU (not to be confused, as it often is, with Ohio State). I want to pursue clinical research but it was instilled in me from an early age never to buy the first year make of a car (ahh, automotive metaphors, where would we be without them). Thus no CCLCM. As for OHSU, as one of my interviewers said to me there, in reference to choosing the right med school, "Have you ever seen Jerry Macguire? Good. Well, at the right school you'll just feel the kwan...."

Case definately won the kwan challenge. Or is it the quon challenge? Anyway, it was still a rough choice to leave my house and roots here; I'm West Coast to the bone. Can I get a holla? (Ex*Mike, you're Nor Cal, right?)

BTW, what kind of computer are we going to be using? Did someone say a Latitude D600?

Hey guys,

Well it seems as though i'm gonna be heading to Case this fall. I'm starting to look for housing over the next couple of weeks and am gonna be making a trip out to cleveland in early july to take a look at some apts. in person Where are most of you guys looking to live? I'm not familiar with cleveland at all and just need some general advice....

Also, I was just wondering is there any website for accepted case students for us to look for roomates. Is anyone on this board looking for a roomate or know of anyone looking for people to live with? I was just trying to keep all of my options open.........thanks for the help..

Hope to see all of you in the fall!

Thanks Andy333! I would definitely love to hear more often from Case, but whenever I called Ellen, she was always super nice and gave me all the info I wanted, so I don't mind being in the dark temporarily... But I do hope they'll keep up more informed though... Whenever I feel not enough love from Case, I come visit this thread... I'm happy this thread exists!!

I can think of no more appropriate class to initiate the hit the fan stage of our medical lives than biochem. BTW I took my biochem final yesterday and I'm done! I would say never again, but apparently it will be my first science class in med school 🙁 .

It's been about that long for me too. From what I remember, biochem was mostly about memorizing different pathways. So I don't feel at a great disadvantage. Heck, med school is mostly about memorization anyhow.

that and keeping all of the dehydrogenases, carboxylases, swivelases, gyrases (sounds vaguely pornographic...), phosphatases, ridiculases and/or synthetases straight. BTW--what is the difference between a synthetase and a synthase?

**dual post... posted in the Case housing thread also!**

Hey Judd,

Question and update about parking here...
is 53 a good lot?
It seems to be right across from campus (an in a garage no less) but 68$ a month.
We now can / 'have to' reserve the spot online at http://parking.case.edu . It needs our Last name and our social security number for id. (the medschool has put our names into the system so it's good to go.

Also, a packet was sent out yesterday from the admin office... Don't know what's in it, but it's comming.

I beat you... Took it in 95'. Hey Mike, what was the name of the auditorium we took it in? I can't remember... wasn't Mud Hall was it? I remember the stair case going down and at grades posted outside the auditorium, but that's all. 🙁
