*** Official CCOM Class of 2011 ***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just decided to accept my invitation, so i will be at CCOM in the FALL! I currently live in Denver, but went to UT austin for undergrad.

I am really excited about starting school, but really nervous about finding housing. I have 2 cats, so i cant live in campus... eveything off campus sounds expensive, or a little out of the way.

Do you mind sharing some of the good things that she mentioned about CCOM?

Hey CCOMers-

Check this out...I was shadowing a family medicine MD today at Memorial hospital in south bend...anyways...I was sitting in on their meeting with the attending...and guess who sat next to me...the chief resident....and...guess where she went to school...CCOM!! I was so impressed with her knowledge...she beat out 24 MDs to get chief resident...she was so nice and talk to me about CCOM for like 10 minutes...I'm glad to be attending Midwestern in the fall.

I was wondering if in your acceptance packages, it mentions when the white coat ceremony will be held. I am on the waitlist so I don't have the info (or the acceptance - yet). I just wanted to compare the dates with the other school I 've been accepted to. thanks and maybe i will be joining you all in august (i hope so, even though i love dcom and its potential, i really don't want to move). thanks

Anyone tried their email yet?

Yep 😀, and I received my first email last week. It was from financial aid. Apparently they can't process my application without proof of my selective service registration. Hi, I'm grinCHICK5. Last time I checked, my sex chromosomes exempted me from that particular requirement.

cbenedic, you get the email after you fork over the deposit.

Is anyone else freaking out about going 240,000 into debt for medical school...I'm from out of state and this is frightening.

:scared:

I am definitely freaking out, especially because I have some undergrad loans as well. BUT, I keep telling myself that many people have done it before us and they are living comfortably, it just might take 30 years to pay them back. I remember my physician telling me a couple of years ago that she had just paid her final student loan pay stub and she is in her mid-50's.

Any one else going to be doing the whole long distance relationship next year? My boyfriend of 3+ years is going to be in med school in Cleveland and I will obviously be in Downers Grove. It's really scary and depressing 🙁 and so I was hoping maybe someone else would be going through the same thing as me.

Ouch, 30 years? I'd be happy to suck it up the first few years of income after residency to pay off the loan early. I don't understand people who want to spend all their money right away and have loans to pay back until their 50 (unless they have family obligations). To me, it seems like it makes sense to live small first, but I may be missing something that everyone is seeing.🙄

Unless... you're making more money by keeping your funds in investments and they are growing at a percent higher than the rate of student loans. Yet, I somehow doubt that is the reason why people are in debt for so long.😛

My gf of almost 3 years is in law school in Champaign? It's a 3 hour drive... Not quite the same as Cleveland, but I understand what you mean. If she decides to do a MD/JD, she's going to try to rotate in Chicago. I think a lot of schools allow you to go around the country to do rotations so maybe that'll be a possibility for you guys. Also, I know they do cater to couples for the match so you have that going for you... however, I dont know how it woudl work if you were to do a osteo residency program vs allo. (i'm assuming he's in an md school in Cleveland?)

Woo hoo! Another Doctor/Lawyer couple!!

Yeah he is doing an MD program that has an extra year of research, which complicates things further since we will be entering the match different years. I am hoping to do an allo residency, but I think that in order to do the couples match you have to do it the same year.

I think you've got the right idea...just keep telling yourself that it can be done.

Personally, I try not to think about it too much (that's been working pretty well so far).

I agree…I’d like to pay it off ASAP. We’ll to be double income household after I graduate. We plan on diverting pretty much all my earnings during residency to loan repayment…maybe that’s why I’m not too worried.

I plan on going into primary care, probably peds of FP, so unfortunately 30 years is more realistic. I will be living simply but from those loan calculator repayment things it looks like it will take 30 years. Although the boyfriend is going to be a surgeon and so if we can sustain a long distance relationship maybe it won't take 30 🙂

As a pediatrician... you make like 100k - 150k right? Minus taxes, you're still taking home like 60-70k? You shoudl be able to do it in less than 30 years? Having a significant other who's a surgeon def woudln't hurt! Share the wealth!

I really shoudl be studying for my anatomy and immuno test this week, but... did anyone watch heroes last night? 😱 😱 😱

OMG!!!! Yes! And I can't believe I have to wait until April 23 to see it again.
Can you believe it all?

Marcia

It was awesome. And then Lost last night!? 😱 😱 😱 Just when I was losing interest, they start answering some critical questions (pause). I think I just realized what may cause me to fail out of medical school. :scared:

How long after 'the phone call' did it take to get your acceptance package? i feel like i have been waiting forever!!

i just got mine yesterday! 🙂

i have a question, if we submit our $250 deposit online, do we still have to mail in that payment voucher?

Don't worry redracer, I am still waiting for the acceptance package as well.

OK.

I'm angry and this is not right. When I payed my first deposit (accepted mid...I never received anything from Midwestern about financial aid. My parents forwarded to my school address this letter about opening your email account. I received that letter on March 7th. When I open my Midwestern email, I see some email about the deadline for financial aid being on March 2nd....so I call the financial aid office and explain to them that I was not informed of the financial aid deadline till March 7th...(I couldn't find financial aid stuff in my matriculation agreement) and they told me I was out of luck...that they only made exceptions for late accepted students...I'm so upset....I don't know if I should protest or if I should just turn my stuff in and blow it off.

at the interview i was told march 2 is simply a priority deadline? that the actual final deadline to submit your fafsa is not until the summer. hmm...i submitted my fafsa in feb. and i had ccom listed as a school even though i wasn't accepted yet..i think i should call the financial aid office soon too...

Yay! I just got my acceptance package in the mail today! Does it have anything in it about opening our email accounts? When do we get that letter?

If I recall correctly, that comes after you send your 1st deposit.

You're fine. The March 2nd date is a priority deadline. All schools have it and they always say it's "best" if you do it before then. I turned in my fafsa for the 2006-2007 school year (this year) in Feburary 07 for my school when the priority deadline was in march/april 2006 and I was still fine. Obviously, I woudln't recommend waiting that long, but just get it in ASAP and I (think) you should be fine.

I am also annoyed with Midwestern. In the mail today, I received a letter saying that they do not consider me to be an in-state student. I was born and raised in a Chicago suburb, so I am not quite sure why they are questioning my residency! My undergrad is out-of-state, but that doesn't change my state of residency! I am pretty sure this will get taken care of, but it just sucks since it is the weekend and I can't do anything about it 😡

Yes, you do. Either that or you can fax it i think. It should say it on the form if i'm not mistaken.

i am in chicago and available to go out on friday, if anyone's interested 🙂

I'll be around this weekend, and I would love to hang out- let me know!

Hello all! Just wanted to introduce myself...I was accepted a couple weeks ago and thought I would log on to meet more classmates! I am living in Washington DC right now but excited to get back home to the midwest. My parents live in Madison. If anyone is interested in living with a female plus dog off campus let me know! I will be searching for good deals when I graduate and come home (end of march).....Glad to meet everyone! Looking forward to school. 🙂

woops....I meant I will be moving home to Madison and looking for housing around midwestern in May/June (not march).

Hey Everyone! Is anyone going to be around SoCal at all? We shouldn't miss out on the fun just because we live far 😀

Orientation is getting closer...🙄

Hello CCOMers -

I have a problem and looking for help or advice. I found out today that I need to take a general physics 2 course by July 30th! I received a C- and CCOM accepted me but didn't say anything about my pre-req until I called to ask about it today.

I can take it online or at a community college. Anyone else have to do this or know of a good place. I am in school now at Georgetown and would like to save money and time and do it online.....HELP!😳

If they don't mind you taking it at a community college, I would definitely do that. But, since it's a physics 2 course, it may be hard to find a college that offers it for the first part of the summer, since most colleges I know of offer it as a sequence in the summer, with physics 1 in the first part of the summer and physics 2 in the second part. I don't think it is that expensive at a community college. Also, if you're moving home to Madison to live w/ parents until orientation, try to find somewhere at home to take the course to save money by living w/ your parents. Those are just my thoughts.
Good luck,

Lori

Tough decision. Ultimately, I think you should go with where you will be most happy and where you will get the best education. Maybe you could compare match lists for the 2 schools and see if there are any differences that could help you make your decision. Money is a huge issue, and I think it's smart that you're thinking about it- CCOM is pretty expensive. If you are going to be happy at CCOM though, maybe it would be worth it to you. I'm kind of in the same boat as you because I'm waitlisted at an allo school also, and I think I would face a tough decision if I was taken off the waitlist and had to choose between CCOM (which I absolutely love) and the cheaper state med school. Good luck!

Just wondering....is anyone thinking of joining the military to pay for med school? I have a liberal friend who is graduating from Mayo and said it was the best thing she did...not sure if it is for me though....any thoughts?

I looked into it for a while b/c it sounded so perfect... "get paid to go to medical school and only give a 4 years back" The more I looked into and asked people about it, the more it didn't seem like it was worth it for me. The military/governemnt isn't going to shell out that much money just for you to give them a couple years and leave. I was told that if you're okay with sticking with the military for a while.... then it's an awesome deal. After talking to a few friends who had the military pay for school, they said that there are definitely ways for them to squeeze more years out of you if they want especially if there is a war going on at the time.

The way I look at it... loans are a pain, but they'll get paid off eventually and you'll have a lot more freedom doing what you want in the future.

Thanks for the thoughts...I have a few girl friends who are in the military and are happy to be doing it. I was actually very surprised. I have also heard that since the military "owns you" they can even have a say over what type of residency you go into and I am sure as osteopaths they would probably put us in family medicine. I am not ready to decide residency yet, I don't want to discount anything at the moment.

It is just money - you need to do what you are passionate about.

I had looked into the program and from what I gathered it is your choice and not the military to choose your residency. You can list six programs during a military match which occurs in December, way ahead of the osteopathic and allopathic programs. If you do not match in your military program of your choice, you may elect to match in an osteopathic (Feb) or an allopathic (Mar) program. Unless you are strictly seeking a military match, since there are only six choices to list, you should not have a problem. You can choose to go to a civilian hospital for a residency. The military does not direct what residency program you choose.
