Hi all,

Just accepted to DMU last week, and will look no further for a school. In truth, I fell in love with DMU, and started thinking that if I did'nt get in there, I did'nt want to go anywhere else. Look forward to meeting you guys, and putting faces to these creative names.

Thanks for starting this thread Munchkin.

Welcome Einar!!!!

See you in August!

I extend my welcomes to all of you incomers... As you all know well, this is the place to ask questions so ask away.

There are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years (such as myself) who linger around to answer any questions that we can.

😎

Hey thanks for the offer! I just sent in my DMU deposit, JOY! I do have a couple of questions though.

First, do you know if it is possible to defer for a year? Will the school be pissed if I call and ask what their policy is 🙂?

Secondly, for anyone doing their clinicals or about to begin them, will we really be traveling every other month or so for those 2 years? Or will we have the option to rotate in a single large hospital or two?

Thanks, if you need more details as to why I want to defer, I can provide that. Hope to hear from someone soon!

Just talked to financial aid and they are waiting for the technology dept. to issue our user ids. Then we will get an email to fill our DMU online FAFSA application. She told me to go ahead and submit my FAFSA through the government online now (you need to request a PIN if you haven't already done so). She expects that they will begin processing first year loans in June.

For those that haven't done financial aid before (lucky you), if you were lent $40k from good old Sam, the gov. sends DMU a check for $40k and then DMU subtracts tuition etc. The school then issues you a check for the difference.

Let the fun begin!
🙂

Financial Aid...fun? FAFSA...fun? Riiiight! 😉 The FAFSA was exceptionally easy this year. It's been a while since I have filled it out, but it was a lot easier than I remember it being! Maybe because I don't have to include my parents anymore! 👍

Sunstar--Thanks for the update about the DMU id's and DMU entrance interview!

Time's a goin' by quick!

You raise a good point that many people not familiar with the area may be unaware of. Namely, the ghost problem. Des Moines, while friendly, affordable and relatively crime free, has a warranted reputation as ghost filled. This is actually a misnomer, since most of them are actually specters. Check the realtors website, they are required by a recent state senatorial mandate to provide a realistic assesment of expected haunting problems. We had the ghostbuster out to our house three times in one month before we figured out that we just had a homeless meth addict living in our attic. Boy were we relieved....getting shived I can live with, but ghosts, YIKES!!!

Eh... you know you like ghosts; they're your friends 🙂
lol... then again apparently so are homeless meth addicts 😉

Now that was what I call a funny story

Welcome Einar!

Eh, it's been a while since I've posted, so I guess I'm far from the first to say welcome to the most awesome class at DMU, the class of 2009! :horns: 😀

See you in August!

I've also been accepted. We'll see if I get into a cheap TX school first.

In the meantime, I've preparing for Des Moines. Anyone know of reasonably priced homes for rent?

And just how cold DOES it get in Des Moines??? :scared:

As a native Iowan I can tell you that the winters can get rather cold. THough lately they have been pretty mild (very few or no days around 0 degrees F). But there are years where we have had several days to weeks below zero actual temp. Really it depends on the year. Heck this last year I was playing basketball outside in shorts and a T-shirt in Feb!

I would also like to say that I am looking for a room mate this next fall, so if you want give me a shout and we can maybe work something out.

I looked in the form and it looks like we need the signature of the president/dean of DMU. I emailed back to see if we need this right now since we haven't started. I'm joining to make contacts in the area b/c ideally I want to do rotations and eventually practice in MN. 🙂 woohoo our first medical conference. How exciting!! 🙂

🙁 I am stuck working this weekend sadly. I will try to get it switched but it is usually pretty tough as everyone looks forward to their weekends off. I will let you know if I can switch with someone!

Hey guys, sorry but I'm not going to make it to the MN conference anymore. An opportunity came up to go to the Philippines for a week that I couldn't pass up. Please let me know how it goes!

Hey Sunstar- got an extra ticket for me? just kidding

Hey--

I've had some down time at work lately and I was going crazy deciding who to use for loans to cover my broke @$$ during school. So, I put together a couple excel spreadsheets (one for federal loans, one for private loans)comparing some different companies and their respective offers. I know...I'm a dork...but don't worry...I ain't no gunner! 😉

Here's the problem...I don't know how to put files up on this SDN thing, so, if you are interested in looking at them, PM me with your email address and I'll email you the files!

😀

So how many now have been accepted to our class?

And how many of those are actually excited about starting medical school in August? Or in other words can't wait to start med school... and the horrible-copious-torturous-kill-any-sane-person-overload of studying? 😀

Count me in as one that can't wait... 😉

Hey DMU Class of 2009! I am so excited to meet all of you in August. I'm so glad that someone started this thread. A little about me:
I am originally from WA state- now living in oregon and work in research full time. Quick question: does anyone know when the DMU roommate search will be online through the DMU website?
Thanks- Marta

Hey Everybody--

Yes, I am one of those people who can't wait for school to start...but I'm also one of those people that, once it has started, will be wishing it was over! 😉 I just can never be satisfied...story of my life! 😉

Anybody going to be in Des Moines this weekend (April 2/3)? I am gonna be in town looking at apartments....yay! *sarcasm* PM me if you're going to be in town and wouldn't mind gettin' together with me (and my gf) for a drink or two Saturday night....Granite City Brewery, West Des Moines (I think).

Cheers

Yea I received an envelope as well but it was a newsletter/alumni magazine. I hope they send out the financial aid packet soon.

I'm guessing everyone's received the email from financial aid, right? We'll finally be able to sign into the student portal soon! Yay! Now we'll be "real people." 🙂

So much anxiety in these next few months--so much to do, to get ready, to plan... and four months from now, we'll all be in the same lecture hall beginning our careers in medicine. Yeeeehaaaaw!!

Got the email that said the computer dept. is going to send out our user id/pwd but haven't received that yet.....
🙂

If by "Yeeeehaaaaw" you mean "OHHHH THE PAIN" from banging our heads against the wall; then yes. In four-six months we will all be shadows of our current selves. Ah yes the perpetual lack of sleep and heavy doses of caffeine, I can't wait. But in all seriousness, school is going to WAY better than the real world.

Hey Marta!
Welcome and congrats! OR, I'm so jealous!!! I have always wanted to head out that way, haven't gotten there yet!
I heard from someone the roomate search will be available online sometime in April. Hopefully sooner than later! I am going to be in Des Moines this weekend looking for houses. I will stop by the school if I get a chance later today and ask around. Maybe I can find a little more info...
Once again, welcome!

Hey, just wanted to say hello... I'm new to this site but really excited to meet everyone in August!! I live in the Des Moines area and just a couple blocks from DMUso if anyone has any questions or anything feel free to shoot them this way. Also, if anyone needs a place to stay while visiting DMU or des moines, let me know, you are welcome at my place as long as I'm not out of town or something like that.

Welcome Class of 2009-

I am a graduating DMUer who would like to find an incoming student (or couple) who is interested in not having to move much furniture to Des Moines.

I have an apartment at Windsor Terrace, directly across (3333 Grand Ave) from the new fancy building on campus. Our apartment is one of the nicest in the complex-we are halfway b/t the two streets that border the complex so there is v. little traffic noise and we look out on a beautiful courtyard.

It is a very large one bedroom, hardwood floors, gas stove, heat/hot water included, many windows, w/d only one floor down. We pay $600.00/month which is v. cheap for the area, quality, and clean/quiet complex. (there are a couple complexes nearby that may be cheaper but also are smaller/noisy/motel like)

we want to turn this apartment over to someone who also wants to buy our furniture: we are offering queen sized pillow top in like new condition (used less than 10 months), leather couch and chair, coffee table and end tables. other items: microwave, some dishes, desk, dining table, etc. You could basically show up with your clothes and books and be all set! In my opinion nothing beats a two minute walk to class/library/tests/new gym/workout center!!!!!!

please PM me with serious inquiries and I can email pics

FYI-you would be renting from the Windsor Terrace management and buying our furniture from us.

my email as well:

[email protected]

Thanks!

Does anyone know how many spots DMU has left for this year's incoming class? Just curious if anyone had any information.

Hello to all in-coming students!

I'm a first year and wanted to welcome you all. I don't ever get to spend time on this site, but if you have any questions feel free to drop me an e-mail at [email protected].

It's good to hear the excitement from everyone! I'll see you all at the great pre-orientation activities!!

Hey everybody...

My User ID and Password page includes my new email address at DMU... but can we use it yet? Where? How? I don't see it on the portal...

So I logged into the DMu site today- and all the papers and info about the school's health insurance plan is posted. My question is this: I know that SOMA offers health insurance for members. Is their plan better than what DMU offers? (The SOMA plan has a dental option while the DMU plan does not). If anyone has any advice or information- please let me know. It's all so confusing. Thanks

Ms Evolution
First, hello to a fellow WA person! (I am originally from Seattle but now am stuck in Corvallis, OR) Second, I don't know if we can use the email address at DMU yet, but to access the email account- just click on the envelope icon up on your internet browser once you are logged into the DMU site.

yes....you can use your email. i've been using it for a couple days now. you can also go to www.dmu.edu and there's a link on left hand side of the page that leads you to the student webmail account. use your log in id and password and there you go!

I should add the price for our furniture (I have got a few emails requesting this)

We are asking $1100.00 for:

Leather couch and chair (decent quality from big furn. store)
coffee table and two end tables (lower quality)
kitchen table with 4 chairs
dresser (pretty nice one-solid wood/light colored stain)
queen sized pillow top bed (very good cond.)
computer desk (from bestbuy, pretty nice, lots of room to study)
book shelf
2 lamps
microwave
some dishes

No way...our thread was on the second page of threads. C'mon guys...that is unacceptable! 😉 I had to post something just to get us back on the top, where we belong! 😛

Nah...I'm really posting to let ya'll know I'm going to be down in Des Moines again this weekend (4/16 and 4/17). I'd love to meet up with some future binge-drinking cohorts. So, PM me (or email me at my new email [email protected] cool is that! 😉 ) if you're going to be in town and wouldn't mind gettin' together with my GF and I for a little dinner and drinky drink!

Hope to see some of you soon!

Cheers

Hi Everybody,

I just thought I'd introduce myself here. I'm coming to DMU in the fall, too - can't wait! I'm encouraged by all the talk of beer, as I, too, enjoy the occasional brew. It looks like there's at least one other Madisonian here, too! Excellent! I can't wait to meet you all!

hey all,

another future dmu-er here. this thread seems full of outstanding people, and i'm anxious to join all of you in august.

just wanted to share with all of you a recent experience i had. the flavor of the day for me is anesthesia, so i looked up some residents here where i work (med college of wi). turns out we have 4 dmu grads. so i faxed my info over to the dept. and asked that it be distributed to the residents. all got back to me and were cool as ****. but one actually took me and my fiancee to dinner and gave us loads of pearls. i emailed him to thank him again, and i'm posting his response to give you an idea of the kind of people attending/graduating from dmu. it may read a little out of context, but i think it gives a good idea of his generousity, openness, and support.

"Not a problem - anytime. If you have questions, my door is always open -
please don't hesitate to call or send an email. Especially once school
starts..panic strikes at any time, and I had two good buds who helped talk
me through moments of terror. One of those buds told me of his having
diarrhea for the better part of a month at the start of school...he wasn't
kidding! Also, we'll have to set up a few days in the OR once you're back
home on vacation - if that is something you're interested in. The best
way to get ahold of Amy is to try her cell phone. However,
her cell phone is lousy, and sometimes its tough to get calls. Better
idea is to leave a message on MY cell, and I can relay any
messages to her/she can listen, etc.

I have something I want to give you before you leave for school - I don't
know what your schedule is like but we'll have to have you and Jen come
over to pick it up, and stay for some food on the grill - whenever your
schedule permits. Congrads again man, you're going to be a physician, and
its awesome! Let me know how the apartment hunt goes, and let me know
what works with your schedule.
Cheers."

can't wait to be his colleague some day.

that's great! i am proud to be attending DMU in the fall, and i haven't met one person (future student, current student, alum) that I would not be proud to be associated with! And working in such a large institution (MAYO - Rochester) i have met plenty of professionals I wouldn't want to have anything to do with!

we're in for a sweet four years!

Great. I think this only proves the point again that DMU is very selective towards their DO class personality..you either fit their standard or you don't...they'll give you the boot after interview if they think you're not a good fit.

Hey all the new SDN-dmuers,

Just also wanta say welcome aboard and I for one am also eagerly anticipating the start of school and meeting all of you.

By the way, Javandane, I just moved from milwaukee and had met an IM resident at mcow from DMU. I agree with your assessment, very friendly, going out of their way to ensure our success. Do they teach us this at school or what? We are lucky, it seems, to have colleagues watching out for us.

For some easy navigation of the above link: here is the area around campus.

I feel good ... (FAFSA's submitted and I successfully logged in to the student portal and jumped through the financial aid hoops found therein).

Now, it's back to my regularly scheduled lazy summer.

F! Has anyone seen all the paper work that needs to be filled out before August? Loan forms, health insurance forms, medical records forms, forms to forfeit your first-born child, forms to complete other forms and the all-powerful MASTER PROMISSARY NOTE!!! Oh god-run for your lives. Did anyone know how LAME this was going to get before we even set foot on campus? (Which by the way is looking really SWEET) Well I didn’t and I am now thinking of moving to Mexico instead of Des Moines come August, though I don’t know if the “Minute Men” will let me do that.
In other news, I would like to publicly acknowledge that Beers32, earmuffs09, myself and one other man, will all be moving in together come July. Four men and one wiener dog tackle the beast know as medical school. I think I might try and sell this idea to MTV, it has to be as interesting as THE INFURNO right? Only with more intelligent characters who are significantly less hot.
