Old_Mil said:Any of you future DMUers in Seattle? I flew out here for a wedding on Thursday night and am heading back on the redeye tomorrow night. I've pretty much exhausted the list of things to do on the waterfront (I'm staying at the Edgewater hotel) and was looking for ways to keep myself occupied tomorrow.

Anyhow, my wife and I have purchased a town house over in West Des Moines off Jordan Creek, anyone else living there from our class? I think there are like 5 left in that development. The builder is Triton homes and they are good quality homes and spacious, cheaper than renting too, if you get a 5 year intrest only Adjustable Rate Mortgage loan, with the idea that you will move after 4 years anyhow before the adjustment in intrest rate. Plus that area of Des Moines has been growing for 10 years, good investment when time to sell I reckon. Anyhow, just checking...
See you all in a couple months!

Anyone else going to be around that area?

Old_Mil said:Hello! You've picked a nice area of town to buy in. With the mall and all the development going on over there, it would seem as if the Jordan Creek area is going to be an ever more popular place in Des moines...just make sure you have a little breathing room with that ARM since interest rates are currently adjusting upward and the last guidance from the Fed is that they aren't done raising rates yet. Congratulations!

FutureDocDO said:Sorry to disturb you guys/gals, but I have the dreaded number question. I am applying this cycle and really want to go to DMU. If you all are comfortable, can you post your GPA/MCAT and what is unique about you that makes DMU pick you over other candidates? You can also PM me you if you'd like. Thanks a lot for those who respond. Again, sorry to interject.
My numbers:
Overall: 3.45
Science: 3.48
MCAT: to be revealed this coming June

mzafaran said:Hey guys..
does anybody know what alternatives we have as far as health insurance coverage? I can manage to get even better coverage directly from wellmark for the same price that the school is charging, so I don't know what's the deal with that. What are you guys doing? It seems like the school is cashing in on the insurance plans just like the way they do with lending the loans.
Portier said:Hey guys,
Boards for us DO-07's are on the 7th and 8th of June.
While I languish away here preparing for what is sure to be a challenging exam, I wonder about the post boards celebrations.
I'll be in town after boards until 1Aug when I go on my pilgrimage down the East Coast starting in Maine (I'M EXCITED).
I'm hoping to help my brain in it's quest to kill my liver during the interim...well, at least swap the balance a bit.
I wouldn't mind doing some "I'm so excited to get into medical school" partying with DO-09'ers, too.....
🙂

After not getting a real reply after going through their website, I called their number and it almost sounded like they are not doing any rental assistance right now. Has anyone else used it?
Maybe i should just do things by myself, but that seemed easier. How did those who are already set up do it?

Portier said:Being a swinging bachelor, I chose the apartment closest to the school....I also don't have any foibles about creature comforts....
I suggest staying close to the school if you have a choice (gym access, printing access, library access, etc.). Close to school middle class places are:
1) Imperial
2) Windsor Terrace
3) Grand Prix
4) 42nd and Grand (can't remember the name) East Des Moines
Higher Rent
1) 3000 Grand
2) Anything in West Des Moines...you have to add in commute gas money....
FYI, the school is in East Des Moines, and lots of the newer stuff is in West Des Moines....East Des Moines streets go up to 63rd, then start over going into West Des Moines with 1st street.....
The interstate is also FOOOOOOOOCKED up right now...easier to walk than take that messy calle.....
2)

It's not really called East Des Moines, Just that West Des Moines doesn't have a counterpart. East of Des Moines is totally ghetto

grabby handsmcportier, I will also be here, so perhaps we will have to show the new first years how handle their med school problems through your ever popular gin and tonics

Will we be seeing chopstiks during pre-orientation?

Thousandth said:Olga, as far as your insurance goes I would drop that company if they wont insure you in any other state. I use Geico and had no problem with the move. I don't know what you pay but coming from California to Iowa my insurance dropped by half!
rjfreed said:I've got another question for the fellow '09ers. For those that needed an alternative loan, did you use wells fargo like the school suggests, or did you go elsewhere? The dmu portal makes it seem like they are a good choice. Is it just easier with them, or do we get a better deal, too?
