How about the good old bar games? I remember foosball, but does DMU have ping pong, pool, and darts too?

Why are kids in the student lounge?
Yes, Yes, and No.

Kids are on campus during lunch pretty much every day (M-F). Spouses usually bring them along to see mommy or daddy in between classes. Very "family friendly" atmosphere from noon-1 pm at DMU...

Anyone wanna make babies??

Well, it looks like the prospects of buying a house have fallen apart, so Casey and I will be renting. Where is everybody starting to look for places? Any good internet resources for DSM rentals. Also, JBone, could you PM me some info on the townhome you rent?

Lastly, I'm getting married in 6 weeks!! :scared:

Hey boner, My wife and I just bought a nice house on the east side for 120 1600sf, with nothing wrong with it and the inspection went well. We looked at about 35 places in a weekend, some needed to be bulldozed while others were ok. If you want I'll give you my realitors info, he'll hook you up. Since your in pretty much the same situation as us.

The townhomes jbone lives in look really nice. I keep calling them to try to get on a waiting list but can never get through to anyone.

Hey Guys I gotta question. Recently dropped my 500$ for my first deposit about 10 days ago. I think I'm supposed to receive some stuff in the mail or by email about my portal stuff that tells me some more steps I need to take towards matriculating. Can anyone help me on this? I emailed the school but the response I got was a little vague.

Well if it was worded anywhere near so eloquently & specifically as this, I can't imagine why...LOL.😉

Once you are able to log onto the Portal there will be a huge list of things you have to have before August or whenever you guys start. Immunizations, diploma, insurance waiver/policy sign-up...It shouldn't take all that long to complete, but RELAX, YOU HAVE ALL SUMMER!!!

If you're this type A now, I'll see you at Mercy in the Fall for that Perforated Ulcer you're going to develop

I'm not really Type A at all. Just feel really fortunate to get into a great school like this and don't want to F anything up this early in the process.

Relax, it is what, almost March and I don't have all my immunizations done yet; I couldn't afford them over the summer and I may be a non-responder to HBV vaccines (soon to found out, oh joy). The moral of the story: when you pay the money to save your seat, you are going to have to really F up to get the boot this early in the game (like kill someone).

It took DMU a little while but I got my portal login info in the mail about a week ago and I mailed my deposit in Dec. You should be getting yours very soon. No worries 🙂

Well it sure won't be coming today since government frickin employees get the day off! Seriously...I know we honor past presidents today, but why does the government & all its employees need to shut down on a day like today??

This is your 2nd post in a day that mentions killing someone... Should we be getting some message out of this? :scared: 😉

Took them a while? Heck, UMDNJ has yet to send mine, and they got my deposit first! (It's a lot cheaper). Must be that state school factor. Anyway I think DMU's communications to people are fantastic so far. Maybe that changes once you get there.

Just kill Jbone, no one will ever notice.

You kill me now, I will grow more powerful than you can ever imagine! Going to go Obi-Wan Kenobi on your a$$!

BTW, I am so excited for you guys (Class 2011). Let me know if I can help in anyway. And yes, my townhouses are really nice. PM me if you have any questions. I'll try to get you a good phone #. Sorry about that. 🙁

Yep, once you get here, we all ignore you, close down all the threads and sacrifice small kittens to our great God, Jbone....weirrrd..

I haven't slept in two days (if you don't count the half an hour I got before our test), so I like killing people. Catch me after five days and I won't know who I'am...its pretty funny, in sad, sad way actually.

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!! Ha!

classic family guy (yes, I can relate family guy to pretty much anything):

Obi-Wan Kenobi walks in on Luke performing lasik on a woman:

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Luke, use the force...
Luke: are you sure?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Luke...use the force.
Luke: okay, (laser floats from hands and slams into woman's eye and through her head). ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: I' am never happy....

I just need to get my HBV (third series).

Does your apartment complex accept dogs? Mine will be under 25 pounds. Also, where are they located in proximity to the campus? Thanks a lot!

Yes. They allow Jamers to come and run around.

But yes, our townhouse complex allows dogs. Only nice ones though.

Enough of this housing talk...😀

Guys, is it true there isn't really a preceptor program or any LIVE patient contact until 3rd year? How'd I miss that part? 😕
Too busy impressed with everything else, I guess. 👍

Not sure about the preceptor program but during class time, you do not see actual patients. During the SPAL you will have about 15 encounters with paid actors and you pretty much will do about every exam on them. That being said, there are countless opportunites to get out into the public and help. We do clinics, demonstrations, health fairs, international missions, help duing sporting events and much more.
Needless to say, if you want the extra contact other than the SPALs, you will have more than enough opportunities to get involved.

Man Ortho, you really starting to dig aren't you.

Maybe a second year etc. can chime in on this subject including the preceptor program stuff.

Awe crap... I need to get my titers rechecked. I'm with you Jamers.

Sad, isn't it?! Thanks for the info.
It took me by surprise a bit, but I figure if someone really wants to, there's probably plenty of ways to do something less formal, and even maybe more fun because it's less formal. 😀

So I don't know anything about a preceptor program. In addition to SPALs my biggest patient contact has been doing school physicals.

DMU has a contract through one of the insurance companies that covers many of the schools around midcentral Iowa. DMU's students then get to go provide free school/sports physicals & practice their physical exam skills. You do the entire exam until the hernia check, at which point the attending physican comes in and supervises the hernia check & rechecks heart & lungs to make sure you don't miss any murmurs (I have actually been surprised at the number I've picked up).

Other than this, there is the chronic care program in which you get to go visit w/ an elderly person in the community. Don't know a whole lot more about it b/c I'm not in it.

Osteopathic Finish Line (OFL) is an opportunity for you to go to races & other athletic events & practice your OMM on participants. There is also OMM Community Night & different events that we provide OMM services to the community.

There are also other opportunities that I can't think of at the moment so although we don't have a true preceptor program, you can get involved in plenty of ways.

Actually these options sound like more fun, anyway!
Thanks again, guys.

Well boys and girls, I just got accepted to USUHS (The military Med school) and now I am torn. I am the son of a retired F-15 pilot and have a wife and 2 kids and would love the military lifestyle (easy ride through med school/residency) but am torn now. I love DMU but really enjoyed USUHS too. Awwwwwweeeee choices!

Out of curiosity, what is "easy" about the school? I looked at the website and the academic calender had you going year round all 4 years? Doesn't sound easy to me...

Unless you were talking money?

(probably money, plus the match, etc...)

Anyway, congrats, Fizban!! Good luck deciding! :luck:

It's easy because he gets paid 40 grand to be a student. I have a budy there when I was thinking military and who loves it. The reasons I didn't do military are because of the first sentence I started this paragraph out with: money. I couldn't really find many more positives to the military life style than the fact I wouldn't be 300K in the hole. Another big turn off was the fact that I may have to move around and if we elected the current geographically challenged idiot as president, I didn't know who would next sit in the office or what country they he/she woud like to blow up. In your case, it does actually come down to a lot more than just "what school is better" you have to factor in "what I want to do in X years, if I am comfortable with the military lifestyle, if I am comfortable with military medicine (try to get a straight answer out of anyone on that one...haha) and if there is more in this for me than just money..."

I could have gone to USUHS, but after reading about the after residency life style, I realized it was way better to be a civilian. Sure its nice not havng debt, sure theysay you get 30 days vacation a year, but when could you use it? they make you go officer camp the summer before and field training camp the summer after first year and the rest of your life your in residency. plus the pay back is 7 years active duty with 7 years reserves, so basically during these times 14 years active. 14 years of no freedom? Makes me want to watch braveheart.

"They may take our lives..."

You know, I had the same situation. Well, very close. I am fairly confident I would have gotten into USUHS after I was invited to interview there. However, I decided to turn down both USUHS and the Military scholarship because I just decided that military life was not for me, and it was coming down to money, and that just raises red flags. A very good friend of my attends USUHS but has done ROTC all four years in undergrad, and knows without a doubt that he wants to be in the military all his adult life. He turned down great schools like Univeristy of Washington and Penn State to go. So unless you know how you feel with 100% confidence, don't go. DMU rocks, so either way your in a great position, Congrats.

Everyone has brought up some very good points. I am very familiar with USUHS and military residency as I have a brother-in-law who graduated from USUHS and is doing his residency in Hawaii. Hard work but good pay. I think military vs civilian can be summed up bay saying the first 7-8 years of life in the military would be great but the rest of my life would be better in the civilian sector. If I didn't have a wife and two young boys this would be a no brainer but the simple fact that I have to provide for them right now does come into play. I will really have to think about this one.

by the way, my decision will have nothing to do with MD vs. DO. I will jusge the medical school strictly based on their overall ability to generate great doctors. I would be honored to attend almost any medical school (there are a few I wouldn't touch) 😉

i might lose a golfing buddy :scared:

golf would be cheaper in iowa 😀 I live in bethesda right now, and there aren't very many public courses around. All the congressmen and senators love their country clubs.

i might lose a golfing buddy :scared:

Yes, can we have a moment of silence........

BTW, Iowa has more golf courses per capita (?) than any other state and it is freakin cheap!

The city courses range from 18-25$ w/ cart for 18 during the week!!! Pretty f-ing sweet if you ask me.

Happy Trails! 👍

You guys may be joking about the golf but you don't understand how much of a factor this is to me. I know if I go to Bethesda I will have little to no golfing oppurtunities (cost, time) but in Des Moines I could be in golfer heaven (the coolest thing about my acceptance to DMU was the hand written note that came on the acceptance saying, "the golf courses of Iowa awate you"). It is really my one true love (next to my family of course) and the thought of little to no golf for the next 4 years makes my stomach turn. Ahhhhhhhhh I hate these kinds of choices........

Wait, why would you have any more time to golf in Iowa than in Maryland? 😕
Wouldn't it be more torture to be THAT close to all those golfing opportunities but not be able to take them, then to be somewhere where they weren't just outside the window??

Ortho, just because Jersey's gulf course is a swamp behind the garbage dump, doesn't mean you have to ruin it for everyone else 😀

One of my teammembers is always in amazement when I tell him how cheap the golfing is here in Colorado (same prices as in Iowa).

He lives in Maryland and works in Virginia.

I look forward to the courses in Iowa.

What do I know about golfing??!!
I hit a ball once in gym class....
I swung at a whole bunch more....
and that's all I know about golfing.
Oh yah, there's some guy who's really good named Woods.

Well the schedule of classes is a little more time consuming with the additional miltary classes they make you take in addition to the standard science courses. Plus I am assuming that the courses in a highly populated area like D.C. is going to be very busy where I think some courses in Iowa would be easier to get a tee time at.

Hey everyone! Does DMU doing a new student weekend in the spring (like a Spring Fling) for students to meet and see housing? I know TCOM has a weekend like this, but that just might be because everyone's from TX and its easier for everyone to get there.

Also, I was thinking about getting a place downtown...any recommendations? Thanks!

If they don't have a weekend like that we could always organize a DMU-SDN c/o 2011 weekend.

Didn't people get that email invite to the March 7th thingy? Maybe not the exact same thing, but well it would serve a similar purpose...
