Does anyone know when/where/how we get our NET ID's and passwords?

Yea, they will actually send you the netID and password via snail mail... It takes a little bit though for them to get you into the system and then send out the mail. So unfortunately you just have to be patient! I was accepted a while ago and I just got my NetID in the mail last week...

Hey everyone, I apologize because know that this post is a little off topic, but my GPA is a little high for the "low GPA thread" so I need some advice.

I have been waitlisted at Georgetown. However, I am doubtful of my chances of getting in, b/c I did not receive any "high priority" e-mails (like EdTech8 did), and my spring grades are probably the worst of my college career (not horrible by normal person standards, but definitely so by pre-med standards haha), so I decided to not send them in. Furthermore, my MCATs are a 31O so at the moment I am not planning on retaking them. I received my MCATs in early May, and after that decided to apply to Tufts and BU SMPs as well. However, between finals, recommendation providers taking vacations, and some personal issues to attend to, my applications are just getting in now. Suffice it to say, I am very doubtful I will get into an SMP this year.

My question is, what should I plan on doing next year? My overall GPA is prob a 3.1 now and my Science is probably a tad higher than 3.0 (I am the queen of getting B+'s, which unfortunately have been offset more by a few C's than the slightly more A's I got). Furthermore, the downward trend in my GPA definitely does not help, and there is no good reason for the trend either. So should I apply to more traditional postbacc programs next time around despite the fact that I did OK in my prerequisites and have a competitive MCAT score, or should I reapply to more SMP programs despite the fact I have less than competitive numbers for the higher quality ones, such as Georgetown? Furthermore, should I consider retaking the MCATs? I feel like I definitely could have prepared more (I basically decided to take the April MCAT in mid-January so I could apply to Gtown this year), but then again, my PS score of 10 was a miracle because physical sciences is deffinitelyy not my area, and I don't to risk making that score worse.

Sorry about the long post! I appreciate any insight though... thanks guys!

If you're able to get into an SMP now, then go for it.
If not, then try to get into a post-bacc since the main thing is your GPA.
With such a low GPA, your MCAT is not competitive, so if you feel confident you can do better, you might want to consider retaking.

Either way, you need to get back into school and improve your grades.

I received a "status update" email on Friday from Amy Richards saying that I am on the high priority wait list and will likely be offered a spot in the near future. It said that the program offers many acceptances to people on this list over the course of the summer and I can expect to hear from them again soon.

Anyone else on this list or know how many people are on it? I had been planning on Tufts MBS at this point, not sure what I would do if I get the nod...

Yes i just go an email saying the same thing. Does this mean there is also a normal waitlist with applicants who are less likely to get into the program?

I just received an email stating that I was admitted into the program. But it will still take up to 4 weeks for the committee to verify my credentials and mail out a letter of admissions. Does the admission package just include the letter or are there additional items in there?

Had been waitlisted since April and got a rejection email two days ago. My post-bacc GPA was above their cut-off (and I have a 33 MCAT), but my regular undergrad wasn't, and Dr. Mulroney suggested that would hurt me. She said if my spring grades were good (which they were), it might make the difference, but evidently not. I'm waitlisted at Cincinnati, too, and at Penn State for actual med school, but haven't heard from either in a while. Anyway, just an update for the other waitlisters out there. Good luck!

I just found a place at River Place West, anyone else living at River Place?

The acceptance letter just includes the deposit form

I think the daily course schedule is not out yet (I may be wrong), but does anyone know what it looks/looked like in past years? By that, I mean what time on average would classes start and end everyday.

I'm sure someone has a better understanding of this because the website is rather vague. Thanks!

Hey guys,
Im wondering if it is possible to defer my acceptance to next year? If so, do i just send an e-mail to Georgetown?

So I was in a situation where I was waitlisted at a few MD programs and it was looking somewhat bleak for me to get in. I applied to some SMP programs (including Gtown) -- then I was accepted to a few MD's (Albany and Rosalind Franklin) and now I've been accepted at a few SMPs (Tufts, Georgetown, Loyola), and I'm wondering: would I be better off just matriculating to the MD program where I've been admitted (Albany/Rosalind Franklin) or going to a more prestigious SMP where I might have a shot at a top-notch med school?

My stats:
Brown: 3.4 GPA
MCAT: 34R

Just send an e-mail to Aureller Cabiness asking for a deferment and she'll get the process started for you with Stuart Schept at the graduate school.

When I finally got my deferment confirmation form last night, I found out that you still have to pay the non-refundable $500 deposit, though. Totally wasn't expecting that.

I'd take the MD acceptance. Med school is med school. There's no guarantee you'll get in anywhere next year, and most likely not to the same ones if you reject their offer. You'll end up dropping 50K on your SMP when you could be in med school. Additionally, if you slip up in the SMP, you will get in nowhere afterwards...totally not worth the risk. Don't worry about the name of the school, it's what you do in med school and how you perform that really matters. Personally, I'd take the Albany acceptance, but that's just me.

Beyond the fact that as a previous poster said that the SMP is hard (as a just-finished SMPer myself) and you NEED to do well, you also cannot assume that just because you got two acceptances this year for med school that will happen again. In addition, schools in general do not look kindly upon turned-down MD acceptances.

The more I have read, the more I have come to realize that the school you go to doesn't really matter as far as 'rankings' are concerned. I don't really know what you mean by a 'top-notch school' beyond considering US News. What matters is that you do well wherever you are. If you don't think you'd be happy at either of the schools you've gotten into, by all means decline. Just be prepared to answer questions about why you turned them down and/or why you applied to them in the first place if you never had any intention of attending.

And of course, there is the additional debt issue...a bigger deal for some then others I suppose, but definitely something to consider.

As one of the many who are just trying to get an acceptance ANYWHERE, I get a little peeved since you have two and are asking this question 🙂 Just playing, but in all seriousness pick the school that you think you'll be the happiest at and then don't look back!!

Congratulations on those acceptances, those are both great schools!!👍👍

What did you guys put in AMCAS under gtown where it says degree and major?

Does anyone know precise tuition information? All I found was this on the
website:

"Tuition

Tuition is subject to change each academic year. For the 2007-2008 academic year tuition for the SMP is approximately $33,400. Payments are due in two installments at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. No tuition waivers are available from the Department."

I'm here to answer my own question. 😀 Tuition is 35,160.00. Split into 2 payments on August 15 and January 5.

I just withdrew my acceptance to attend drexel's SMP this fall, so I hope one of you get my spot here! good luck to you all!

Just got my acceptance today (an hr ago).
I wasn't waitlisted or anything, just that it took them almost 2 months since my app. was complete. Good luck to you still waiting~

Look forward to meeting you guys there~

So did Georgetown case anyone's check for 500 dollars?

Where is everyone living while they attend the smp program?

I was accepted back on the 19th off the "high priority" waitlist and just officially accepted today. Now to find somewhere to live...

Just found out I was accepted...but still trying to decide between Georgetown and the Cincinnati program.

So all those that haven't heard/are waitlisted there are apparently still spots open.

Moved into River Place West today in Rosslyn. Have over a month until school starts anyone wanna chill? 😀

Hey cool! My wife and I's lease started today as well! We aren't moving in until the 15th though... how did the move in go?

Move in went great, the management gave us shopping carts so it went really fast lol

I walked from Rosslyn to Georgetown medical building today just to time it and at a brisk pace it took 30 minutes.

Thats not too bad... I still need to call and make a reservation to move in or whatever... Glad to know that it went well!

I just booked the plane for DC and all of a sudden it hit me.......
Am I safe to assume that if I received the congratulation e-mail, that I'm accepted? What is this thing about the Graduate Office verification?
Maybe I should have waited till I received the official letter by snail mail.. but that would be at the end of July!

What would be the chance that the Graduate office rejects the program committee's recommendations for my admission?:scared:

Anyone have a number that I can contact them to check the status of my application? I'm kind of holding out for them before I accept any other schools.

How were you guys informed of your acceptances? Also, do you know if they are still accepting?

from what i gather from all the SMP schools that I've applied. High gpa is not exactly what they are looking for. High MCAT with a lower gpa is something they like to shape with.

I have 3.4gpa, 29Q (2nd tried), was given a wait list, after a mistakened rejection letter first lol. Also 2 other wait list else where....but i think my chances are quite bleak :scared:

I recieved an official acceptence letter in the mail about a week ago. This was about 2 or 3 weeks after I called Mrs. Cabiness and she verbally told me I was in.

right so...i don't understand, with 3.7 gpa and 33 mcat why aren't u in med yet? if ur goal is med, so apply already. If u are interested in resesarch then do resesarch. SMP is mostly academic enhancer (as described on aamc).

I'm taking a year off because I took my mcat late. I'm applying to medical school right now. I applied to the SMP program because I could get a degree in my year off and I heard the program was good. But, I'm now hearing from some people that it won't make a difference for my application and that I'm better off doing research for a year. I'm really confused whether the SMP is a right choice for me or not.

It is absolutely, with out a doubt NOT the right choice for you. You are well above the average accepted applicant to medical school already!! The SMP is designed for people with LOW Gpas... So here is the deal, if you want to get a masters in one year then by all means do the program, however you have nothing to gain and everything to lose... You are right in that with your stats the program isn't going to bolster your application hardly at all, however if you do poorly it will RUIN your chances at getting into medical school...

So, all that being said this program is not designed to help students in your shoes, do research, or work, or travel or whatever it is you would like to do before entering medical school. Congrats on those numbers though I expect you will have a successful application cycle 🙂

Take the MD acceptance!!! The goal of an SMP is to help you get into med school. You've already done that! Be happy!

Turning down an acceptance to a "lesser" school to reapply just because you want in at a top school looks *really* bad. Don't do it. Med schools will know. Do you want to be a doctor or not? If those schools weren't acceptable to you, then you shouldn't have applied.

Anyone know if a laptop is necessary? Or beneficial/useful to bring to classes?

This is not a choice. Take the MD, or you'll regret it, seriously.

Get a Mac

I have recently been taken off the waitlist and placed in a priority accept pool. Is this just a fancy way of saying im still on the waitlist? Or does this mean pretty much I will get admitted? 😕

Cool picture.
No, but for real.
Would you need one for classes?

Im contemplating whther I should bring my desktop or buy a laptop there..

For me, the laptop was useful in some SMP classes but not essential. Some professors gave us their powerpoints before lecture (some didn't, which was annoying), and it can be helpful to take notes on the laptop with the given slide. You could also of course print out the slides and take notes on the printout, or take notes in the syllabus. Ultimately, I found that I learned more in classes where I didn't have my laptop with me, as I tended to just screw around on it.

I suppose that's my roundabout way of saying that you don't NEED a laptop, but it's rather nice to have one for some classes.
