your stats are so amazing!!!

I applied to BU, UPenn, UDM, Michigan, CWRU, Buffalo, Columbia
For your own contentment, I applied to Michigan first batch and just received an interview invite the 29th of september, your stats are also better than mine all around so you should expect one soon.

your stats are so amazing!!!
Yeah I'll admit to that, but I don't feel I have the same caliber of extracurriculars, research experience (0 hours), or shadowing as most others, so it evens out pretty nicely haha. And most schools don't want what appears to be a book worm (I promise I'm not, I hate reading), but that's how I look because I spend most of my free time doing things not application worthy :I

Just playing, it's very impressive.
You must fit into the well-rounded applicant type they are looking for.

Hello Everyone,

i need some advice about alternative ways if i did not get into dental school. I gave dat twice and in my second time , my scores are DAT (19 AA/20 TS/18 PAT/18 Reading/any section below a 17, yes 15 QR ) and my science GPA is 3.16 and overall GPA is 3.32. I applied 11 schools and i already got rejection from one school. I graduated in Dec 2013 and I do not know about this year. I really wish to get acceptance this year but if unfortunately i did not get and then i have to wait another year. I am just if there is any master program started in spring 2015 or tell me what should i do. I seriously need advice because i applied last year only to 3 schools and did not got accepted and i know it is because of lower DAT. I had 50 hours shadowing experience and some 70-80 hours volunteer experience.

you could use a little help from improved DAT, but your stats aren't that BAD. Some people have sub 3 GPA and those are much harder to make up for than your GPA.
Do some more volunteering/shadowing in the meantime, and if you want to raise your GPA, do an informal post-bach, which consists of taking upper level bio/chem classes, which will show that you are able to handle upper level science courses. If you can, you can give DAT another shot and see if you can get 20+ across the board.

Hello Everyone,

Hello! Here's my 2 verbose cents. Disclaimer: this is the way I see things, and you DO have a shot at getting in this year (as 2THDDS wrote, your stats aren't BAD, and you did apply to 11 schools), but if you ended up needing to apply a third time, here's what I see:

Your DAT scores are on the low side and so is your GPA -- but it seems others here have conquered those stats with stellar EC's, postbac classes, and/or studying hella hard for retaking the DATs. However, you also only mentioned 50 hours of shadowing, and 80 hours of volunteering -- and since you're applying for the second time, they'll be wondering what you did for the 10 months between graduating and applying. Did you shadow more dentists? Did you work in the field of dentistry, maybe as an assistant or a technician? Since some schools even require 100 hours of shadowing, they'll also be wondering if you're certain *dentistry* is the profession you want to pursue. They'll also be wondering what you bring to the table: What is it about you that would make them want to offer you an acceptance?

From what I gather, dental schools want to know if 1) you can handle the rigorous course load (high DAT/high GPA/Postbac classes in upperlevel bio classes), 2)you know what exactly entails being a dentist (shadowing; working in dental offices; president of dental club), 3) you're compassionate, and community health oriented (volunteering), 4) you're curious about science (research). 5) you're interesting: you're not just a bookworm and socially awkward (interviews; fun extracurriculars) 6) you're a leader and can lead an office (leadership experience) 7) you'll serve an underrepresented community (minority). LOR's and interviews are also a way to display all of the above.

Obviously, emphasis on each point depends on the school, but all this boils down to "Why you got the chomps to become a dentist; why you want to be a dentist; why you think you'll be a good dentist."

If you can get your application to show more of those aspects (postbac classes to raise GPA; higher DAT; shadowing/volunteering) then it may be easier for you, if there needs to be a next time. We're also relatively early in the application process... Chin up! Lots of us are still waiting to hear back from schools.

(Lastly: you being rejected last year -- maybe it's the DAT, but you also applied to three schools. Even the best applicant can have trouble with just three schools.)

Thank you for ur responses. I am currently contacting some dentist to do some more shadowing. I will see some near colleges and university to my hometown to have upper level science course. One more thing i am currently working as Quality Assurance in Pharmaceutical Company. Would that be one of the plus points.

Just as an FYI. I graduated undergrad with some less than stellar stats (3.2) and decided to take a year off to do research. The day after I graduated I started research in a new lab, and i wound up doing a masters and getting a 4.0 and 22 on my DAT and i am now feeling more comfortable in this application cycle instead of having wasted money applying before. If you are interested, find a lab and do some research, its great for your resume, and will give you a ton of stuff to talk about on interviews, etc. Study hard, get above a 20 on your DAT and I think you will be golden with a few upper level graduate classes to boost your GPA in the meantime, if you end up having to apply again. They will definitely see you are dedicated. Good luck!

I am depressed.
I feel you dude. This wait is a killer. My boss tells me everyday "you're in my shoes, but don't give up"

He got rejected two cycles in a row and switched to dental tech instead. Stay strong, it's all just a waiting game. It's worth it though.

For a while after I declined the Upenn interview I kept second guessing myself for not spending the money to go to their interview but today I'm really glad I didn't take time off of school and spend the money to go to a school that I soon knew wasn't a good fit for me. Good luck to everyone and hope when you look back, that all your decisions were also good ones! 😉
