Anyone heard from Cali programs?

I talked with a program director yesterday from a very big name program and he told me that he was very surprised to hear that other programs are already starting to invite applicants for interviews. He said they had 300 applications thus far but that they had not even printed them out yet or invited anyone for an interview. So relax guys, it sounds like it will be after November 1st.

Email from indiana saying they play by the rules and no interviews until Nov 1. I didnt realize giving out interviews ahead of time was not playing by the rules..interesting..

CORDEM recommends waiting until after the Dean's letters are released so programs can evaluate everyone completely.

hey guys...yeah ALOT of programs (according to our dean) are not going to start giving interviews till the second week of nov, so if you haven't gotten any yet, don't worry! people i talked to that matched last year said they were still scheduling interviews in jan! sooo, deep breath 😎

UCONN
my first 🙂

I got that darn Indiana letter as well today. At first I was all excited until I saw what it read........ouch!

Did anyone here apply to Indiana and not get that letter?? Or did they send that letter to everyone?

I probably would not try to read into it. They seem to have covered all their bases to where they lead you to believe that you might be getting an interview, but then they specifically state that you might not!! ouch!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I would imagine they sent it out to everyone. If you didnt get it for some reason maybe they will send out another batch to people who applied a little later. Either way I wouldnt worry.

It's very rare for a strong program to offer invites before Nov. 1st. If a program is competitive, there is no reason for them to offer interviews before they have your school transcripts, all your LORs, your dean's letter, etc.

Interview offers this early on by programs often indicate that they have struggled in the past with people cancelling interviews, so they try to get you to commit early on with the hopes of interviewing more people.

Mt. Sinai is offering interviews.

I wouldn't call Maryland Shock Trauman, Vandy, Hennepin, Mayo, wake forest lightweight non-competitive programs.

That is an interesting post for a medical student to make. How many residency interview processes have you been through? Having been on both sides of this fence, I can tell you that you are full of $hit (and let me be the first to call "Fatty McFattypants")!

Different programs have different reasons for sending out interview letters when they do. Some do send out "blanket acceptances" hoping to cast a wide net - that is true. But others will send out invites prior to the Dean's Letter because, well, that letter is largely worthless (except as a formality). There are almost no candidates who look stellar in all areas besides the Dean's Letter, whose Dean's Letter then highlights some glaring deficiency. In an effort to "lock down" scheduling as early as possible, invitations are sent out as early as possible. This is especially true for programs who house the applicants or have more elaborate interview day presentations where "knowing" that an interview day is "full" as early as possible really helps. Without your being a PD who has moved between several programs and been active in CORD for quite a few years, I don't think you have any room to talk.

To the M4s in the forum, I was a very strong candidate two years ago. I applied to 30 programs (bad advice) on a strict geographic basis and received interviews from 27 (with only one rejection letter - I am still waiting to hear from two programs!). Of these, some of the traditional "powerhouses" sent early offers, others late. Some of the smaller, "lesser known" programs sent early offers, and some late. One of my "no replies" was a program that has had difficulty filling in the past few years. Do NOT make the mistake of judging anything at all from the timing of an interview offer. They can vary wildly and seemingly without reason. Some of the offers I got were long after some of my classmates', others long before. I ended up at a place that one one of the last offers I received, but was #1 on my ROL.

In the end, please follow the often repeated advice around here and interview at the programs that interest you. The rest will work its way out.
