Official "Interviews Offered" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I talked with the Medical College of Wisconsin program directer yesterday about their status on offering interviews. He said they have only sent out a small batch of obvious ones so far (ie. students who rotated through the department), and that MCW send out most interview invitations in early/mid November.

This is definitely an odd game. I hate making my interview schedule and including programs I HOPE to get an interview from!

MCW sent me an invite about 2-3 weeks ago. I never rotated there. have not ties there whatsoever.

My point is that there is alot of "rumors" around this board and obviously they can be subject to scrutiny. we should all just take deep breaths and realize that in a few months we will all match in EM somewhere.

My problem is that I am basically full with interviews now and about half of the programs are not a place I would truly consider otherwise. You know how it is, you feel the need to play the odds and make sure you have enough interviews to match....

My story was similar last year. I had a calendar, and had to leave places for ones I hoped to get but had not already. I had a few back-up programs already scheduled. Then, something happened. I got no more offers. So I had to keep my back-ups. And fortunately, I did. I ended up ranking #1 (and matching at) a program that was oringinally a back-up. It was not an initial forerunner because I knew nothing about it. A search on SDN and other sites gave me some insight, but nothing solid. I basically chose to apply to it because it was a high-volume EM program in a community setting. But after interviewing, I realized what a hidden gem I had found. So much so that I started to compare all my other (supposedly more desirable) interviews to this one "back-up." Now, after being here for a few months, I know that my choice was the right one.

Point is, sometimes you may think that a program is not worth considering, but try to keep an open mind and you may find a hidden treasure. 🙂

I have few new ones. and since I am the only one using my EM/IM thread I figured I would add them on here.

100% true....in the past tense. Nothing against FP..I love it and would do it if I had not already been doing it for 6 years as a PA. Except for the inpatient stuff, there is not that much more to challenge me. I also worked as a paramedic and corpsman with the Marines, so I have a ton of EM experience. I just missed it and decided I wanted to learn more, and have more opportunities for teaching. Sorry Ectopic, that is the dillio....should I have checked with you before making such a career move, or should I have consulted the psychic hotline or something 😉 ?

And I have never felt more secure about a decision in all my life. I will miss FP, but quite honestly if I ever felt like doing it again I would just open my own urgent care/family clinic when I get older. But I think that itch is already well scratched!

A friend of mine doing IM said that some programs offer invites regionally. The UAB IM program has an attending assigned to each region - so depending on who's faster, that's the order the invites get sent out. She said that none of the UAB peeps have gotten invites from UAB - but applicants in other regions have, and that is the reason. Don't know if that's the case everywhere, or in our specialty, but I thought it was an interesting consideration.

No I'm not that worried about it. Guess I just wonder what goes into the decision making process. Everybody does it a little different.

Indiana sent me an invite at 11:58 pm last night

And they clearly state that they send out more interviews than slots, so I would check email regularly to secure a spot. I called and got no answer, but left a message. Hope they check it soon.

So I'm guessin' that if a program hasn't even downloaded my MSPE yet, I may not be on the short list for an interview. Some of them downloaded it at 3am, while others (Copa, Vandy..) still haven't as of this evening. More OCD over thinking, but what can I say- I'm a 4th year med student with nothing else to whine about.

I don't think so. I can't speak for all P.D.s, but this is the way i do it. I start sorting as soon as the mail boxes open. This is because if I wait for the Dean's letters, we would have hundreds of hours of work to do in the first few days of November.

Insted, I offer interviews (for after Nov 1) to those who clearly exceed my criteria once I have the MLEs or Comlex, a transcript and at least 1 or 2 letters. I give an early rejection to those who won't have much of a chance, so they can get on with their plans. The folks in the middle get put on hold until after the dean's letters are out.

Since your documents only now are being loaded, I doubt that many PDs have made a decision about you. I still have slots to offer and if you were applying to me now and your documents just arrived, you would get an interview if you exceeded standards. You would have the same chance of an interview if in the middle as if your documents were uploaded earlier.

I suspect other P.D.s who issue invitations before Nov 1 would give you the same answer. For those programs who offer no interviews until after the dean's letter is uploaded, your other documents should make no difference.

I don't think of documents as later unless they arrive significantly after Nov 1.

Hope this helps

Brian Nelson

First let me say that it is incredibly nice of you Dr. Nelson to come on here and address our concerns. In my opinion I think it speaks highly of you and your program. It is great that you make yourself accessible and it definitely helps us get some answers to questions.
