Is it appropriate to send out letters of interest to programs we have not yet heard from regarding an interview? i.e. those we are really interested in, or to those in far away places that it may not be assumed that we would attend.

I would be curious to know if/when this becomes okay as interviews are given out. There are a couple of programs in particular that I wouldn't mind expressing further interest in as well. Any takes on this from the vets on this board?

Anyone have any idea why Duke is rejecting folks so early? Most of you who didn't get an interview from them seem like you're getting offers from other really good places. It just seems a bit odd to me that Duke is already rejecting people who probably have good applications (as evident by their interview list posted here) this early in the game.

no love from emory either....though ever since the dean's letter went out the interviews stopped especially ones I thought I would get shortly after the release of it (why couldn't my school scan the stupid thing up properly and no I'm not at the bottom of my class)....and yeah I got duke a long time ago.....I don't know what the deal is with them. 😡

I decided I am doing some serious cancelling this weekend and will take no other invites regardless after Friday. Its just getting out of hand and there is no way I can do all of them.

You'll find there is seemingly very little method to this madness. People will turn down interviews then get rejected. You'll get an interview at some place that interviews like 30 people total and then get rejected from your backup. You've gotta remember that programs look for people who they think would be a good fit and would conceivably come there for residency when they offer interviews. Lots of different factors involved. It really seems crazy but programs are unfortunately limited to what they see on paper. Don't take it too personally.
And don't be too perplexed by Duke (new program that scrambled for every resident two years ago) offering an interview and UNM (Western program notoriously difficult to match at) not offering.
Sure you'll all do fine so don't stress too much or check your email (or this website) too many times. Easier said than done, right? Definitely one of the most fun and exhilarating experiences of med school, don'tcha think???

So I declined UTSW the other day, after 2 invitations - the second one listing all the great things about their program and please respond, yada yada. This AM they send me a rejection... as I said above, Ole Miss did the same thing. Do they send out rejections to people after they decline?? I hope they are getting my emails. Hmmm.

It seems that everyone has a great list so far. Although there are a few places that I would like to hear from, I am very happy. Right now I'm stressing over Step 2. 😱

Though I was just speaking of declining that interview, getting a rejection makes me feel so violated!

Like others, I got the Rejection letter from UTSW after I had CANCELLED. I think it is just a generic letter to people who aren't coming for whatever reason.

Rejection letters will probably me just as frequent as invites from here on.

Has anyone heard anything about UC-Davis? Or Carolinas?

Well, I just flat out got rejected from UTSW today. 0-2 my last two programs. So much for how I thought I was doing.

I've reached a state of near-Nirvana with the programs I've been invited to interview at, so I don't care how many more rejections I get from here on out. Anything more from here will be icing.

I totally agree, looking through the thread lately I have noticed that there is starting to get to be alot of odd inconsistencies. I got UNMexico and got rejected at Duke.
I am not really sure what Duke is thinking? Not that it is a bad program that is not what I am saying, but it is very young and there statistics are not that good. As far as the amount of patients that they see and the amount of trauma that they see. I think they get alot of people applying to their residency based off of their name. Seems dangerous for them to be flat out rejecting people so soon, when they could wait and see how many cancel the interview.
I was never that excited about their program, I was just applying there because I am couples matching and it is a great program for my partner. (of course she got a interview and I did not)

I am realizing that I am sounding bitter. I am really not trying to.
